Denver Post: Rox to drop [Kip] Wells from roster

Kip Wells’ career as a Rockie expired Saturday night, the final chapter in an experiment that never worked for the pitcher or the team.

The Rockies told Wells that he will be the roster casualty to make room for Livan Hernandez, who starts the series finale Sunday against the San Diego Padres. Wells went 1-2 with a 5.27 ERA in 15 games. He missed 74 games with a blood clot in his pitching hand that was corrected through surgery.
...
The Rockies signed Wells to a one-year, $3.1 million contract over the winter, with the idea that he could serve as either a fifth starter or a seventh-inning reliever. He showed up at spring training with a different delivery, drawing the ire of the organization. By mid-March he was eliminated from the rotation competition despite having better numbers than his competitors.

His preference was to start, and as a reliever he never settled into a role. The Rockies will have to eat roughly $900,000 on his contract.

Next stop, NRI-ville.

How about a return to the White Sox? They need a starter.

Kip Wells home/road splits, 2008

Home: 5.1 IP, 10 ER, 16.88 ERA, 4 BB/8 K
Road: 22 IP, 6 ER, 2.45 ERA, 15 BB/14 K

So, what's the record for biggest gap between home and road performance for a pitcher?

Replacing Kip Wells with Livan Hernandez is like replacing crabs with herpes.

So the best trade of Bonifay's career ended up only worth one very good season of Wells, one good season of Wells, one roughly average innings eating season of Wells and two of Fogg, and three 80 ERA+ suckfests (1 Wells, 2 Fogg), plus 69 innings of suck from Lowe. Good haul for the rest of Ritchie's career and a minor leaguer, but still.

The best trade of Bonifay's career was Ringon for Giles, and the Ritchie trade was on Littlefield's plate.

I guess, but some pitching coach out there is sure to love his arm, and the blood clot makes for a fine rationalization.
