DePodesta: Enjoy, Padres Fans, Enjoy

The Padres had quite a day today as the International Signing Period began. This coupled with their run towards the #1 pick in 2009 portend a brighter future in San Diego.

Your Padres made a statement today.

Before noon eastern time, the Padres had locked up five of the top international prospects from around the globe for a total of nearly $5,000,000. Those commas are in the proper places.

Let’s allow that to sink in for a second…

Feels good, doesn’t it?

Today we completed the signings of highly coveted players Adis Portillo (RHP), Alvaro Aristy (SS), Luis Domoromo (OF), Corey Adamson (INF/OF), and Elvin Tavarez (RHP). ESPN has comments on each of the Latin American players, but I’ll go ahead and offer my own as well.

Paul seems like a genuinely nice guy, he must have downloaded a personality program into that notorious laptop of his.

I remain convinced he got a raw deal. Of course, I think JP catches more flack than he deserves though.

I really though LA was a good spot on a bunch of different levels though. I suppose one could make the case he "mismanaged" the media, but I wouldn't.

I'm still not sure why he got fired? Because of one fourth place finish? Or because of the new ownership group? Or because of Hee Sop Choi?

Ultimately he got fired because he failed at self preservation. He didn't have the support of anyone who had the owners ear. Obviously there must have been some relationships that he could have handled better. It's not only about roster construction and place in the standings sometimes.

I suspect Paul, at 31 and mostly used to an analytical role, struggled with the "manager" half of "General Manager." And who can blame him! Despite what we all think, I'd imagine being a GM is a very, very tough job.

Oh yeah, that rings a bell. At odds with a lot of the scouting department and poor protocol on some firings and demotions right? I knew there was a reason, I bet Alderson is grooming him for San Diego, especially after lightly ripping Towers the other day.

Supposedly DePodesta isn't the most socially adept person, which may have hurt him during his tenure as GM, but it didn't help that a segment of the local media was hostile towards him from day one. Even so, he patched together a team that won the weak NL West in 2004, and I thought the team that he assembled for 2005 would have had a reasonable chance at repeating as division champs if not for the injuries to J.D. Drew, Milton Bradley, and Eric Gagne - all while keeping the crown jewels of the farm system intact and keeping the payroll in the middle of the pack. What we have seen since then is one playoff appearance from the team mostly with players acquired by DePo (2006), one mediocre year in spite of the ownership group opening its checkbook (but that'll happen when you spend a lot of money on Juan Pierre and Jason Schmidt), and the current state of affairs in which the team threatens to descend into irrelevance in spite of having a crop of good young players and playing in an NL West that's as week as it's been since 2005.

The McCourt situation in LA can't be underestimated. McCourt is an owner, but he's not an operator.
