Desert Sun: One on one with former coach Bobby Winkles

Still a lot of fight in the dog.

2. What about your boss in Oakland, Charlie Finley?

“He was very smart, too, but the worst guy I ever worked for in over 20 years of major league baseball. He’d call me at 6 in the morning after a night game and tell me, ‘Winkles, only prostitutes make money in bed.’ He was overly demanding.”

3. If you owned a major league team and were to hire a manager for one season, who would you hire?

“Well, I’ve got a lot of friends in the game, but I guess I’d take Tony LaRussa. I was with him with the White Sox (as a coach) for several years and he’s the most prepared man I’ve ever known. He keeps notes on every guy and every game. Never writes vowels, just the consonants so he can write faster, like Bbby Wnkls. But I wish Tony wasn’t so serious all the time. You never see him smile.”

4. If you had a vote, would you vote for Barry Bonds for the Hall of Fame?

“Barry went to Arizona State, you know, but no, I wouldn’t vote for him. Because he’s not the nicest person in the world. I know that shouldn’t have anything to do with it, but he’s just so aloof and acts like he’s above the game. I just don’t think that’s what baseball is all about.”
