Dodgers sign Bennett to one-year deal

Cant wait to see the outrage.
Gary Bennett taking a job from a clean player ..
Come on BTF, lets see that outrage ..

The Dodgers took the first step toward rebuilding their bench on Monday, signing free agent Gary Bennett to back up catcher Russell Martin.

Normally, the signing of a backup catcher is not big news. But Bennett was named in last week’s Mitchell Report and has since admitted he used performance-enhancing drugs.

“Obviously, it was a stupid decision,” Bennett told the Washington Post. “It was a mistake. It was something that quite obviously, you regret now.”

We only have outrage for players whose performances were enhanced by the drugs... and Yankees.

I don't do outrage. Head-scratching is another thing. 35 years old, with 7 years in a row of OPS+ between 55 and 66. I don't really know what the market looks like for second catchers, but - eh?

I thought this was referring to his signing ... and I agree!

Is this in reference to the Dodgers signing him?

I have to say, that was pretty funny.

Once upon a time, Mike Lieberthal (unlike Bennett) was actually a good player. How come did the Dodgers hardly ever use him last year?

I don't care if Gary Bennett *did* use PEDs. I'm just grateful for all those moments of greatness he's provided baseball fans over the years, chemically-enhanced or not.

Because once upon right now, Russell Martin is arguably the best catcher in the National League.

Taxman Cooked my joke.

But most catchers don't play 150+ games a season, or catch 145, and Martin's monthly splits are at least a mild hint that maybe he shouldn't have. I'm not disputing how good Martin is, but that doesn't take away the need for a second catcher.

It's not just that Bennett sucks. He can't stay healthy either, even in a light backup role. In 2007 the Cardinals had to drag Kelly Stinnett off the streets to backup Molina because Bennett's back was acting up. Molina even caught both ends of a split DH on 9/15.

He will go well with Lieberthal who has been taking daily arthritis medication for his knee pain for like seven years now. I predict another 155 games for Martin even with three catcheras on the roster.

Bennett was here in SD for awhile, and he has always been seen as a "character guy" and a "heady player", and is a catcher who can't hit. So I think he is seen as future coach and manager material.
