Don Gutteridge dies at 96

They’re breaking up that old Gas House Gang of mine. Don Gutteridge...

Pittsburg icon Don Gutteridge, the last survivor of the St. Louis Cardinals’ “Gas House Gang” from the 1930s, died Sunday.

Gutteridge’s family was by his side when he died late in the afternoon at his home in Pittsburg.

Gutteridge, 96, was a player, coach, manager and scout during a professional baseball career that spanned more than 60 years. On his birthday on June 19, he was the seventh oldest former major league baseball player.

When he was asked if any game stood out during his career, Gutteridge replied, “Every game was special when you got to put on that uniform.”

I thought the Gas House gang as a bit earlier than when he played, but if that's true, it's actually kind of cool to know. I just remember him as the manager of the first White Sox team I rooted for. Boy did they lose a lot of games.

I had no idea Don Gutteridge was still alive. He must have been a hardy figure to survive the 1970 Chicago White Sox for 38 years.

Another article I saw mentioned that he was the last survivor of 1944 pennant-winning St. Louis Browns as well, which I think is pretty nifty.

According to B-R's info Babe Martin still lives.
