Dugout Central: Pagliarulo: Why Cano is Struggling

Batting coach Pagliarulau?

Considering the injuries to Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez, Cano’s struggles at the plate have really hurt the Yankees. I’d have to be at batting practice to 100% analyze Cano and provide a corrective action plan, but let’s see what we can do by watching from the stands and a few games from television.

1 - Cano tends to get too far spread out with his legs. This prevents him from having full flexibility and the full use of his legs. When he’s spread out he can’t back, and getting back is one of the key factors to Cano’s rhythm and timing.

2 - The second one is easy. Cano misses #23. That’s not a shot at anyone in the front office or anyone on the staff. When a good coach leaves, some players are going to suffer (at least for a while), no matter who replaces them. Although #23 was a quiet personality, at least on TV, his presence can’t be underestimated. Players build trust with certain people in and around the organization regardless of their role, and Donnie was a big influence on some of the players, particularly the ones from the farm system.

It took me a while to get who the heck "#23" was. Is Mattingly really the kind of player that everyone should recognize by uniform number right away?

Yes, if you remember the 80s.

Yes, if you remember the 80s.

Sure, I remember the '80s. I was never a Yankee fan, though.

I've been sitting here wondering what Michael Jordan had to do with anything. This is so embarrassing....

Fair enough JRE. I had a wall poster of #23 when I was 15. (Not Michael Jordan.)

I was living in the New York media market in the 1980s, so I equate #23 with Mattingly in a baseball context. Jordan would be the first professional athlete to come to mind in connection with the uniform number.

And #31 is Dave Winfield. #16 is Dwight Gooden. #18 is Darryl Strawberry. #8 is Gary Carter. #17 is Keith Hernandez. And so forth...

I think it's only fair to remind everyone that Pag and Mattingly were best buds while on the Yankees together. A little parochial pimping by Pag there.

I think the most famous number has to be #44: Jerry West, Hank Aaron, Reggie, Pete Maravich, Paul Westphal, Willie McCovey and Danny Ainge.

32 has Marcus Allen, Jim Brown, Steve Carlton, Koufax, Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Karl Malone, Shaq, Franco Harris and The Juice.

Yes, if you remember the 80s.

If you remember the 80s, #23 is Ryne Sandberg.

I thought it was referring to when Cano changed his number.

If you remember the 80s, #23 is Ryne Sandberg.

And Maurice Lucas and Truck Robinson. ;)

#4 is pretty awesome: Orr, Gehrig, Favre, Mel Ott, Duke Snider, and Jean Beliveau.
#5 is hell of a number for baseball players alone: DiMaggio, Brett, Greenberg, Pujols, and Brooks Robinson.
#8 has Ripken Jr., Earnhardt Jr., Aikman, Kobe, Moe Jorgan, Steve Young and Yaz.
#12 is the ultimate QB number: Bradshaw, Kelly, Staubach, Namath, Stabler and Brady.
#21 is a best-ever contender: Clemens, Clemente, Tim Duncan, KG, Deion, Sammy Sosa, Spahn, LdT, Stan Mikita and Dominique.
#25 is pretty funny...Bonds, McGwire, and Fred Biletnikoff, one of the most liberal applicators of stick-um in the history of the NFL.
#30 has Nolan Ryan, Griffey Jr., Terrell Davis and Martin Brodeur.
#33 is another powerhouse: Kareem, Bird, Ewing, Pippen, Patrick Roy, Tony Dorsett and Sammy Baugh.
#34 belongs to Payton but it also has Bo, Earl Campbell, Rollie Fingers, Hakeem, Shaq, Kirby Puckett, Nolan Ryan (again) and Herschel Walker.
#42 has a small but excellent collection: Jackie Robinson, Mariano, Ronnie Lott and James Worthy.
#51 has Dick Butkus, Ichiro!, Randy Johnson and Trevor Hoffman.
#78 is all about linemen: Anthony Munoz, Jackie Slater, Bruce Smith and Art Shell.

May 1st being the date I traded Orlando Hudson for him. Boo yah!

That line since May 1 is passable, but Cano needs to destroy the ball for a month or two at a time to offset his long periods of suck.

Lastings Milledge, Barack Obama...

Mike Napoli is #44 now. I equate #5 with Brian Downing. Jeff Mathis has no business wearing it.
