Edgar Renteria and Orlando Cabrera, are engaged in a bitter feud and trading verbal attacks

Bah!...Just stick the two of them on Sofia Vergara’s bumpy float during Carnival of Barranquilla...and everthing will be fine!

In retrospect, it seems obvious that the two stars should never have done business together. “Really, there has never been a relationship with Orlando,” says Rentería, an 11-year major league veteran. “We’ve never been friends.” But last year Team Rentería, a family business that runs the four-team Colombian winter league and a youth baseball academy in Barranquilla, was looking for investors. Edinson Rentería, Edgar’s older brother and the league’s president, offered to sell the Cartagena franchise to Cabrera, who’d already opened a competing academy in his hometown. Cabrera put in $25,000 to buy the Indios but sold them back to the Renterías at the end of the season, in January, when, he says, his interest waned. Despite many disagreements with Edinson over such issues as TV-rights fees and ticket sales, Cabrera believed the separation was amicable. In fact, it was not.

“He wanted to buy one team so he could wreck everything that’s been done with the league,” Edgar says. “I think he did it out of malice. You should ask him what he has against the Renterías. For several years, people have told me that he’s jealous of me. People have always known me more in Colombia than him, and I think that bothers him.”

As Cabrera listens to a recording of these comments, his jaw drops in disbelief. This is Colombia’s baseball ambassador, the tactful Rentería? Cabrera seems more surprised than angry. “These are ignorant comments from an ignorant person,” he says. “I’ve always respected Edgar as one of the smartest people on the field, who, because of his intelligence, has excelled beyond his abilities. For him to make comments like that is disappointing.”

Wow. That seems like the plot of a bad 80s movie.

I’ve always respected Edgar as one of the smartest people on the field, who, because of his intelligence, has excelled beyond his abilities.

But isn't his intelligence one of his abilities?

I actually read the whole article, and the background info linked at the top. (I'm not sure why I did all this.) When he was with the Braves, Renteria struck me as a slightly paranoid guy, easy to take offense at any perceived slight. I guess growing up in a country where you need guards with machine guns patrolling your house will do that to you.

Now that I've read about it, I've lost all interest in the subject matter for the rest of my life. If you want to read a story that sounds like something from a high school drama queen file, then go ahead and read this. Otherwise, avoid...

Very interesting article.

Are there any up-and-coming players from Colombia? What's going on with MLB outreach there, or anywhere else in South America aside from Venezuela?

Julio Teheran is supposed to be good. Personally, I don't think he's anywhere near as good a ballplayer as Jorge Pyongyang or Esteban Baghdad, but that's just one man's opinion.

I mean, Yamid Haad may be a member of the Altoona Curve's all-century team, but he's not even a major league spare part.

This sounds like an episode of E-60.
Heck they just had their cameras down there trying to drum up a non story, and they missed the real news.

"down there"? Colombia and the DR arent really close to each other.

I'd be surprised if the guys' surname is really "Teheran", what with Terán being a fairly common surname in Spanish (sounds to me like somebody wrote that name wrong).

BTW - Baseball in Colombia extends farther to the NE of Barranquilla, on the way to Santa Marta.

And Sofia Vergara today is nothing versus the AWESOME looking woman she was 12-14 years ago (though she's still no Angie Cepeda).

I would say way no. He's probably not as good a player as Tony Fernandez, who got all of four votes last year. His eventual chances would hinge on his continuing to hit .300 for many years to come, and I'm not sure I like those odds.

Why won't the Yankees retire his number?!

it was an innocent question. seems like anybody who lasts a long time gets consideration. i'm not saying i think he belongs, just noting that renteria has been playing for a looong time.

I take it few Primates have watched "Pantaleón y las visitadoras".

Ms. Cepeda's character in that movie is one of the sexiest ever onscreen (and no, I'm not exagerating).

Well, that definitely makes her unique amongst women in their mid 30's
   26. maharishi mahesh yogi berra (phredbird) Posted: April 23, 2008 at 08:05 PM (#2756307)
and here's a kicker. he has over 1900 hits in 12 seasons. he averages 182 per 162 games. obviously we have to assume a decline and a loss of playing time, but he only needs to average 150 a year to get to 3,000 by the time he's 40. okay, that's a tall order, but he'll play a lot in detroit for the next couple of years, so he might take a nice bite out of that. he stands at some interesting borderlines in the HOF standards and monitor; 30.9 for standards (avg. hof is 50), 75 for monitor (avg. hof is 100). the bbwaa is getting better, but they still do some head scratching picks. if edgar finishes close to 3,000 hits, and close to his historic BA, it'll look shiny and neat to some of those guys ...

Guy LeDouche's favourite obscure hot foreign actress is hotter than your favourite obscure hot foreign actress!

Actually, there's more than a few models and/or actresses out there who look BETTER in their mid 30s than in their early to mid 20s.

It's not any crazier than the Omar Vizquel Hall bandwagon.

This is an unfortunate business dispute between these two ballplayers. It isn't a bad idea for the League office to quietly offer an arbitration service. A lot of unpleasant things can grow out of business deals gone bad.
   33. maharishi mahesh yogi berra (phredbird) Posted: April 24, 2008 at 12:17 PM (#2757271)
nomar? he's done. he won't get a sniff. too many injuries. i'm saying if edgar stays healthy and has only a gradual decline, he'll get real consideration, especially if he gets close enough to 3,000 hits that he can hang on somewhere. he's only 32.
   34. AlouGoodbye Posted: April 24, 2008 at 12:47 PM (#2757312)
The problem for Vizquel is that his value is all in fielding which has never been as well-measured as hitting, and he gets a particularly bad rep around here because of the worthless BPro fielding metrics. But look, Vizquel rates as +12 and +23 (!) the past two years in the field, in his age-39 and age-40 seasons. I don't have Dial's numbers for before 2006, sorry. But you couple that with observation and his general reputation - 11 gold gloves - we are obviously talking about a historically great fielder. With a mediocre bat, to be sure.

Let's say that averaged over his career Vizquel was +15 per 150 games in the field (IMO conservative). That works out to 257 runs above average. Add that to 283 BRAR and you get 540 runs above replacement - roughly Jim Rice territory or maybe slightly lower (once you take into account Rice's fielding). But if Vizquel averaged +20/150 - then we might be talking about a legitimate shot.
