Eric Gagne granted his release by Dodgers

Former Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne has been granted his release by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Dodgers spokesman Joe Jareck said Gagne asked for his release Sunday, six days after he was reassigned to their minor league camp. Gagne had an out clause and could have become a free agent but initially accepted the assignment.

Gagne was attempting to make a comeback with the team he successfully converted 84 straight save chances and won the 2003 Cy Young.

The 34-year-old Gagne had a 20.25 ERA in three outings during spring training, allowing six runs and eight hits in 2 2-3 innings.

I wonder why he wanted out. He was willing to pitch in an independent league last year so it seems a little odd that he doesn't want to pitch in an affiliated minor league this year. Or maybe he was just sparing the Dodgers from having to release him?

I assume he decided that he just didn't have it any more, and didn't want to be in the minors proving that.

I suspect that he realized that it was time to walk away from the game and decided to do so with as much dignity as he could.

I didn't see much of Gagne during his super-peak, but what little I saw was great to watch. He was as dominant as I've seen a closer.

Eric, I'll always have your 2003 Strat-O-Matic card, the greatest pitching card I've ever seen. A small walk chance vs lefties, an even smaller walk chance vs righties, no hit chances, and every out that wasn't a required fielding dependent play was a strikeout. To top it off, SOM decided to give you a -3 hold for good measure.

I used Gagne as an old school fireman that year. I had another top flight reliever to use in the 9, so I used Gagne in the highest of leverage situations, ranging from the 5th to the 9th.
