ESPN analyst Vina says he used HGH in 2003-04, but never steroids

Found: One bad analyst.

ESPN baseball analyst and former major leaguer Fernando Vina said Monday he used HGH in 2003 to try and recover from injuries, but said he never bought steroids from former New York Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, despite claims to the contrary in the Mitchell report released last week.

“In 2003, I did use HGH,” Vina said in an interview with ESPN’s Bob Ley.

...Vina told ESPN he knew Radomski from his time with the Mets and tried HGH after injurying his knee and hamstring in 2003. He said there was pressure from his team (he was in St. Louis at the time), and pressure from himself to get back on the field.

You might think that Fernando would be a bit more media savvy than to just rip off the two-day old "Only used HGH one time" strategy of Andy, because he's, you know, a member of the media but you would be mistaken. I'm surprised he didn't just say that he thought it was flax seed oil. What a moron.

what a scam.

Maybe Barry Bonds should just pay the government $10 million dollars. Some how i doubt they would accept.

Moron?

What did he do that he's not admitting to? Let us know so we can hound him until he admits that too.

Does anyone remember Nelly's "Air Force Ones" video? Vina pwned in that one.

Come on. I'm as permissive as they come, as willing to grant leeway as they come, and even I'm not buying this. He went underground for days while working for the station that's basically airing this 24/7. Quite simply, he's got to come back with a better story than this. If he's innocent, he's coming out immediately. And yes, I agree that the time it took him to come back does not grant that he's "guilty" of doing PEDs. However, he's not even coming back with "I didn't do this." He's coming back with "I did this, but." And in that framework, he just comes off as a really, really bad liar.

Vina was on the Mets? Or is this poorly written? To whom does the his refer?

Vina was drafted by the Mets and played for them briefly.

It is very poorly written. For those keeping score the above is what is known as a misplaced modifier.

I think the big thing is the line 'he said there was pressure from his team'. How many teams have pushed players to take HGH or other drugs in order to get back quicker? I'm sure most of the time they just said stuff about getting back and being a wuss if they didn't (Jays examples are AJ Burnett and Kelly Gruber) where the push was to do whatever it took including drugs.

Sadly we'll just keep hearing how it is the players fault and owners are angels who never would've pushed the drugs on them.
