ESPN: Buchholz placed on DL with broken nail on right middle finger

“I could only feel it when I threw fastballs, so that’s why we strayed away from throwing fastballs and went to a lot of changeups and curveballs,” he said. “Whenever they did call a fastball, I tried to throw it as hard as I could because regardless of how much pressure I put on it, I could feel the pain. I just tried to let it go and most of the time, the pitch wasn’t where I intended to throw it.”

In the fine tradition of young Boston starters…

Chien-Ming Wang and AJ Burnett scoff derisively. Tough it out, rook.

So I guess he's not afraid to throw his fastball, contra what Steve Phillips said about 1,000 times on the ESPN broadcast. I'm shocked, shocked that he got something like this wrong.

masterson up to take his place? I'd at least like to get a second look at what he can do.

This is quite funny really. When we were in game chatter the other night, all we heard from Steve Phillips, who was broadcasting the game, was how Buchholz lacked the confidence to pitch at the major league level and he needed to be sent back down to refine his approach.

Sounds like the most girly injury ever.

kevin - for once, I completely agree with you. He sounded like an idiot. It was embarrassing. I thought Hersheiser actually made several cogent points, but Phillips was just making a fool of himself.

Broken nail has to be the girliest injury which is a 100% legit reason to miss time, right? What else could top it?

He's 8.5 months pregnant.

Naw, it's just a hysterical pregnancy.

The Sox had to have some kind of excuse to keep him from pitching because they need to keep his innings down this year. IIRC he's good for about 180 this year, so if they want him for the stretch run or playoffs he's going to need a few "vacations" to not be maxed out.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't suffer a "relapse" in August.

What's the timetable here? Can't take that long to come back from this, can it?

From the ESPN article:

"I've had a fingernail bend, but never one that just came off. It went all the way off and I just had to end up tearing it off," he said. "It was really tender toward the end of the outing. Yesterday and today, it feels fine. I feel like I could throw."

It sounds like it's a bit more than a little ouchie. I've lost a nail before. It hurts.

Froze my feet once and several toenails fell off in the process.

Boy, when things thawed it hurt like a son of a b*tch.

As to this situation I will have to see if the Brewers unerring ability to be baffled by the no-name, no resume pitcher continue should the Red Sox send a newbie to the mound. Typically the Crew gets about four hits and looks utterly confused.

Meanwhile, they spank around a Brad Penny last night with Ryan Braun hitting a triple that was positively DESTROYED. I was only half-joking in the Chatter last night that when he hit the ball the sound of the "crack!" woke up my dog. His ears definitely went up. Initially I thought the ball was out by fifty feet but there was so much top spin it landed on the fly at the base of the right-center field wall. To his credit Ryan was out of the box running and made third standing up.

Well, I have now bored everyone with my past podiatry issues and some fawning of Braun. Quite the combo I must admit!

HW:

I'll be at Saturday's game. I'm hoping the scenario that you describe plays out to the T. As I will be seated in RF, I am hoping to have a chance to razz Hart while I'm at it.

Best,
scotto

Wouldn't a hystericalectomy prevent that?

Best Regards

True story: I was hit on the hand trying to bunt one time, and my fingernail came off. I had to miss the rest of my Little League game.
