ESPN: Central Washington offers the ultimate act of sportsmanship

OK, it’s not baseball, it’s women’s college softball. And Division II softball, at that. But this is still one of the coolest things that’s happened on a ballfield that I’ve I’ve ever read about.

Holtman and shortstop Liz Wallace lifted Tucholsky off the ground and supported her weight between them as they began a slow trip around the bases, stopping at each one so Tucholsky’s left foot could secure her passage onward. Even with Tucholsky feeling the pain of what trainers subsequently came to believe was a torn ACL (she was scheduled for tests to confirm the injury on Monday), the surreal quality of perhaps the longest and most crowded home run trot in the game’s history hit all three players.

“We all started to laugh at one point, I think when we touched the first base,” Holtman said. “I don’t know what it looked like to observers, but it was kind of funny because Liz and I were carrying her on both sides and we’d get to a base and gently, barely tap her left foot, and we’d all of a sudden start to get the giggles a little bit.”

Accompanied by a standing ovation from the fans, they finally reached home plate and passed the home run hitter into the arms of her own teammates.

Then Holtman and Wallace returned to their positions and tried to win the game.

Having kids has made me a big softie, but this made me cry a little.

I read this earlier today, and I am still feeling good from it.

I have to admit, if it were me, I'd have picked the young lady up and then deliberately run out of the baseline.

I am not a good person.

pfft, this is why women can't play ball. giving runs to the other team... if you wanted to do that, you should just hire sidney ponson!

This is going to become a heavily forwarded story... my non-sporty wife already got it at work today.

And instead of letting Nykesha Sales get those last two points, Villanova should have just brought Tim Thomas in to guard her!

Softball doesn't allow pinch runners in this situation? Or are the umps just idiots?
   8. Fly's New Handle Was Too Long, But Clever Posted: April 29, 2008 at 09:59 PM (#2763605)
Ah. The umpires were idiots. From the 2008 NCAA Softball rules:

8.5.3.2 If an injury to a batter-runner or runner prevents her from
proceeding to an awarded base, the ball is dead and substitution may
be made. The substitute must legally touch all awarded or missed
bases not previously touched.

They should be disciplined pretty severely for that, since the same situation happened in a Major League game within the past 3 or 4 years with Gabe Kapler, and the rule is clearly spelled out in the official rule book under "Players and Substitutions". It's not a difficult ruling...they were probably screwing up balls and strikes, too, if they have to confer and still botch that ruling so horribly as to endanger a player's health.

Regardless of the umpire's ruling, that is one freaking awesome story and one that I'm going to share with the coach of my kid's t-ball team. That is class personified.

To anyone who flipped about about this event: I suggest you look up the circumstances of Randy Johnson's 20th win in 1997.

Thank you for posting that. My first thought after reading the story was "what an incredibly stupid rule the umpires enforced." Turns out, it is not a rule.

How does the scoring work in that situation? Does the batter get credit for a HR but not a run scored?

for those interested, i just looked at the boxscore. In a late september game, the mariners were winning 7-2 after 4 innings, with their SP having thrown 68 pitches. They insert Unit to pitch the 5th and 6th, and he gets credit for the win (his 20th).

Just as gimmicky as Sales scoring those last two points.

You know, the girl who had the record before *earned* her total. That was a gross display of disrespect.

Actually, given the rule, it really doesn't matter - the runs counted anyway, they just allowed a goofy way to complete the circuit.

And will you lobby for Omar Olivares?
   19. Jose Can Jussi Jokinen (Justin T) Posted: April 29, 2008 at 11:47 PM (#2763817)
The obvious difference is that Johnson's 20th win took advantage of a rule book. Sales's feat made a mockery of everyone involved, as well as disrespecting the previous record holder, and a bunch of other stuff that Thom Brennaman would bemoan better than I.

Picture of the three girls rounding the bases

I think the fact that the opposing team was willing to concede the run is enough to justify a very loose interpretation of the rule here.

Well, it's not the opposing team's decision to make. The run very explicitly counts. There's no question about it. The rules are defined in unambiguous terms to avoid having 2 completely medically unqualified people hauling a non-ambulatory batter-runner in need of medical attention around the field to advance the game. The run counts, they can haul her off on a stretcher and get her the help she needs, and the official scorer can maybe fudge the books a little bit if it's not a "home run" in the strict statistical sense for the batter (although I believe it is). There's absolutely no need to put three people at risk of further injury just because the umpires can't read a rule book.

I would have liked to have seen Randy Johnson injure his arm one out short of finishing the fifth and then have two opponents move his arms and legs to complete the inning.

"They insert Unit to pitch the 5th and 6th, and he gets credit for the win (his 20th)."

And the A's agree to swing and miss on all the pitches? And if not, why is this comparable?

How many young women have to destroy their knees before we stop this senseless softball playing.

You've really got a flair for stomping on the spirit of the story.

Yeah, I really shouldn't stomp on the sportsmanship shown here. It's a great story. Just very odd.
