ESPN: Jeter bringing Sheppard’s voice to ASG

And then MLB can hire Jim Gray to interview Sheppard’s voice.

In a special tribute to legendary New York Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard, Major League Baseball will have Sheppard’s recorded voice introduce Derek Jeter during Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

Pat Courtney, an MLB senior vice president, confirmed the tribute will be for each of Jeter’s at-bats. Although Sheppard has not done public address work since 2007, Jeter has kept the practice of having Sheppard’s recorded voice introduce him at Yankee Stadium, as opposed to current Yankee Stadium PA announcer Paul Olden.

Sheppard passed away Sunday morning at the age of 99.

Also, Jeter plans to continue to have Sheppard introduce him for the rest of his career.

“It was an idea I had five or six years ago,” Jeter said prior to Sunday’s game against the Mariners. “I grew up a Yankee fan and he was the voice I always heard. There were a few times sprinkled here and there when he wasn’t there and it just didn’t sound right so I had the idea to record his voice and to always use it as long as I was playing.”

As I said in the other thread, a perfect tribute to Sheppard by Jeter on Friday would be to come up to his first PA without any announcement.

these exercises seem more like clumsy tributes to jeter's "class" than to bob sheppard's legacy.

Not to get all nitpicky here, but Jeter's from Michigan, right? Did he really grow up a Yankee fan?

Jeter was born in New Jersey and spent his summers there as a kid.

And he's from western Michigan, too, which I understand is somewhat contested territory, not just reflexively Tigers country.

SHUT UP!!! (standard Jeter thread response)

"And Sheppard also recorded my eulogy before he died," added Jeter. "He's going to speak about how I was the greatest shortstop in history."

Bob Lozenge said today that "Jeter said he didn't feel comfortable at the plate when someone else announced his name"

Natch...the Yankees jumped after asking how high.

24 and 1/Team Captain/SS for life.

Imagine if A-Rod tried any of this ####.

This is even worse than the time the Catwoman stole Chad and Jeremy's voices and held them for $22 million in ransom. And those were 1966 dollars!

I know every time one of my favorite musicians dies I burn all their records. It truly is creepy to listen to a recording of a ghost!

That's why I only listen to the Archies. Because cartoon characters never die.

Barry Bonds has one-upped Jeter's tribute. Every time he walks out of his house in the morning, he has hired Renel Brooks-Moon, the Giants' lousy PA announcer, to be there in person and announce, "Now stepping outside, BARRY LA-MARRR .... BONDZZZZZ!" And then a recorded crowd-cheering sound plays as Bonds waves to his trees, shrubs and mailbox ... before he adjusts his body armor and drives off in his Rolls.

When the Phillies played Kalas' "outta here!" on the PA last season for home runs, I found it ghoulish. They don't do it in 2010.

I'm the first person to groan at this kinda crap, but you know what?

Let it go.

And I don't mean Jeter, I mean us.

I can't even stand watching Giants' home games on TV because her voice is so grating.

Hopefully Sheppard recorded an alternate eulogy if Jeter decides to go O.J. or commit crimes against humanity. On the other hand, what if Jeter doesn't die, but is assumed into heaven?

Too bad Vin Scully won't announce the ASG game despite it being at Angels Stadium. You want to honor Sheppard? Have a bunch of his the people who knew him announce an inning of the game for each inning.

I, for one, can't wait to hear how much Buck and McCarver will fellate Jeter for this "tribute".... on top of their normal idolatry.

Wow, that's two terrific responses on Sheppard. WTG.
