ESPN: Kershaw will get to spread his wings

GLENDALE, Ariz.—Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who is about to start his third major league season, won’t need to be kept on as tight a leash in terms of his workload as he has been in the past, Dodgers manager Joe Torre said after the team’s first full-squad workout of spring training Friday—and after Kershaw threw live batting practice for the first time since reporting to camp more than a week ago.

Kershaw made 30 starts last year, his first full season in the majors, but threw only 171 innings, an average of less than six per start. Torre blamed it largely on Kershaw’s tendency to throw too many pitches in the early innings, but it also was due in part to the organization’s reluctance to allow its budding star to throw too many innings at such a young age.

Kershaw will turn 22 next month.

What!? They’re not turning Kershaw into a reliever? What about the JOBA rules!?

What about the JOBA rules!?

I thought that only applied to teams east of the Mississippi.
Seriously, I'd like to see Kershaw being allowed to pitch more, providing he doesn't turn into another Kerry Woods.

I heard Ned Coletti interviewed on the Petros and Money Show, and they asked him about the rotation.

He mentioned these pitchers, in this order:

- "Padilla, of course"
- "The two young guys, Kershaw and Billingsley"
- Kuroda
- Charlie Haeger
- then after about a minute of talking about Charlie Haeger, he mentioned Eric Stults and James McDonald and some other guy.

Hopefully Coletti's love for Charlie Haeger means we have a new knuckleball pitcher in the majors for the next 20 years.

He averaged just under 100 pitches/start, 5.63IP / start. So he is going to have to improve on the high-pitch AB's.

I have to say, a flying Clayton Kershaw might be the only thing more terrifying than a regular Clayton Kershaw.

Crispix, how you could listen to Petros and Coletti at the same time and not drive a sharp utensil into your ocular socket is beyond me.....

Kershaw seemed very adept at getting ahead of batters, but struggled to put them away. Better that than falling behind 2-0 or 3-0 and then scrambling to avoid disaster.

There's talk of Kershaw getting the opening day start.

Wouldn't the headline work better if Kershaw pitched for the other LA team?

Wouldn't directing said utensil toward the ear be more effective in such a situation?

The Dodgers have completely lost LA to the Angels?
   15. akrasian Posted: February 28, 2010 at 03:33 AM (#3469641)
Except for interleague against the Dodgers - with the Dodgers as the home team - the Angels have not played in LA in over 40 years. In what sense are they an LA team? Heck, they are more of a NY team in terms of where they've actually played.
   16. Tripon Posted: February 28, 2010 at 03:36 AM (#3469644)
Anaheim is only 30 miles away from the boarders of the city of Los Angeles, and only 20 miles away from Los Angeles county.
   17. SlappyMcGroundout Posted: February 28, 2010 at 03:43 AM (#3469647)
Its the "of Anaheim" that bugs me. Could you imagine the Jets being called the New York Jets of Newark. Its ridicules.

Anaheim is only 30 miles away from the boarders of the city of Los Angeles, and only 20 miles away from Los Angeles county.

Yep, outside of both the city and the county. And deliberately isolated themselves from calling themselves from Los Angeles for decades. And then decided to change for marketing reasons, even though no actual facts of their location had changed.

When I was growing up in LA County, after the Angels had moved to Anaheim, no locals called Anaheim LA. At most people might have called all of SoCal LA for outsiders. But it was considered laughable for locals to call it that among locals. The Phoenician Moreno would like that to change for marketing reasons, but I see no reason to lie for his sake.
   19. Tripon Posted: February 28, 2010 at 03:52 AM (#3469653)
Well, it was part of the contract the Angels signed to get the city of Anaheim to refurbish Angels stadium. I agree its dumb though. One thing I don't get is why so many cities don't try to get a small stake in the team itself when the give out these generous stadium deals to at least force the team to jump though some more hoops if they want to relocate to another city afterward.

Yeah, people in Orange County took a certain amount of pride in being people who were not living in L.A. Although, I do think that's changing over the years I've been here in Irvine. Its probably a coincidence, but you could argue that the Angels name change has a small role in that.
   21. Harold Posted: February 28, 2010 at 04:05 AM (#3469660)
Yep, [the Angels reside] outside of both the city and the county. And deliberately isolated themselves from calling themselves from Los Angeles for decades. And then decided to change for marketing reasons, even though no actual facts of their location had changed.

Sure. "They" (the Angels) don't represent one person or one ownership group, so there's nothing inconsistent between one ownership group marketing themselves as the Orange County team, and another trying to market them as an LA team. OC is in the LA media market, after all.
   22. Downtown Bookie Posted: February 28, 2010 at 04:06 AM (#3469661)
Personally, I thought "The O.C. (Orange County) Angels" would have been a pretty cool way to go; but that's just me.

DB
   23. Harold Posted: February 28, 2010 at 04:18 AM (#3469667)
DB: sure, it might've been. The OC is a big enough market that perhaps a team could do really well by trying to make themselves THE team for that market.

However, a lot of people who live in the OC consider themselves part of the LA market, and they root for LA teams (Lakers, USC football, etc). I don't doubt that the Angels made the right move by going after LA.

Anaheim is only 30 miles away from the boarders of the city of Los Angeles, and only 20 miles away from Los Angeles county.
And Vancouver is only 30 miles away from the US border, but I do not think the Canucks will be renaming themselves the Vancouver Yankees any time soon.
   25. SlappyMcGroundout Posted: February 28, 2010 at 04:26 AM (#3469671)
I don't know one person in OC who is happy about the name change. Every mayor in OC voted against the name change, and the county lost 7 million dollars in court trying to fight it.

The only good thing that came out of this mess is that the Long Beach Armada renamed themselves the Long Beach Armada of Los Angeles of California of the United States of North America Including Barrow, Alaska
   27. Tripon Posted: February 28, 2010 at 04:55 AM (#3469686)
I looked up home games for the Long Beach Armada and was disappointed to learn that they don't play in Long Beach until June. I want to see some cheap Indy baseball with old washed up major leagues players. Jose Lima needs to pitch again!
   28. Bitter Calculus Instructor Posted: February 28, 2010 at 05:05 AM (#3469690)
This makes me nervous because last year Torre rode Billingsley into the ground early in the season. He was exhausted by mid-June.

Another Kershaw article.
Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw keeps the faith

"The thing I found about L.A. is that you can make it as crazy as you want to or you can make it as tranquil as you want to," he said. "You just have to find that balance that works for you. I go to the field, do my work, go home and hang out. I'm not hitting up the night life too much out there."

Kershaw said he doesn't pretend to know what's right for everyone and that he's still learning.

"Some things in the Bible you can take literally and other things you kind of have to interpret for yourself," Kershaw said. "That's why there are Christians that have different understanding of the Bible. You have to live your life based on what you think is the best interpretation of it."

I don't know one person in OC who is happy about the name change. Every mayor in OC voted against the name change, and the county lost 7 million dollars in court trying to fight it.

Well, that reflects pretty poorly on the OC mayors, not the Angels.
   32. Harold Posted: February 28, 2010 at 05:43 AM (#3469701)
I don't know one person in OC who is happy about the name change.

And, really?! It was like seven years ago! I understand that people who felt loyalty to Anaheim or the OC would've been unhappy with Moreno's LA land-grab. That said, have the Angels actually lost any fans? Are there Angels fans here who gave up on the team because the team went after the LA market?

Personally, I think it'd be cool to have an OC team. But realistically, LA is a huge market, and the Angels should chase it, especially given the Dodgers' recent mis-steps.
   33. Harold Posted: February 28, 2010 at 05:46 AM (#3469703)
And Vancouver is only 30 miles away from the US border, but I do not think the Canucks will be renaming themselves the Vancouver Yankees any time soon.

Right, because the only factor that matters is the "30 miles", and every comparison that also has a 30-mile difference is totally applicable.

As someone who actually LIVES in LOS ANGELES ... #### Arte Moreno AND the ANAHEIM ANGELS.

Seriously, they'll be the "Los Angeles" Angels of Anaheim when I don't have to leave work at noon to make it to a home game ...

Right. Because the traffic in LA/OC only makes it difficult to get to Angels' games, and not Dodgers' games. Dodger Stadium is packed for the first inning every night, right? And the Angels can't draw for ####, right?

You don't have to like the Angels, but the truth is that the OC and LA are one media market, and good on Arte Moreno for going after LA.
   36. tl; dr (Voxter) Posted: February 28, 2010 at 06:58 AM (#3469714)
"Anaheim Angels" was always, if you'll pardon the pun, a Mickey Mouse name for a baseball team. I found it loathesome when I lived in the area, and the world would be a better place if they were just allowed to call themselves the Los Angeles Angels, and get reference to that garbagey suburb out of their name.

Uh, no.

LA traffic IS Hell.

LA > OC Traffic in such a way that TRIPS GODWIN'S LAW.

If *you* think LA and OC are the same market ... well, nice to meet you, you're new around here, aren't you???

Well, I'm glad that Barrow, Alaska finally has a team. They've deserved one for a while.
