ESPN: Neyer: We’ll miss you, Dallas McPherson

Who shot R.N….out of a cannon?

McPherson’s 29 and he spent 2009 playing in Japan. He’s also got a .280/.360/.635 line in Triple-A. Oh, one more thing: McPherson missed all of 2007 and 2009 with back injuries. So you can understand why the A’s weren’t exactly counting on him to play 150 games at third base in 2010.

Still, let’s assume he can actually play, and that he can still hit ... You know what might be close to awesome? A McPherson/Kouzmanoff platoon (with Kouzmanoff coming in for defense when the A’s are ahead after six or seven innings). For that matter, a McPherson/Jake Fox platoon might have been interesting, too (except neither of them would have been suitable for late-innings defense).

That’s all gone now. Thanks to the dozen-man pitching staffs that we all love so much, teams resort to platoons only as a last resort. You’ve got your 12 pitchers, your nine guys in the lineup, and your extra catcher, and now you’ve got room for only three more players. You also need a utility infielder and a fourth outfielder ... and now you’re down to one roster spot.

Which is why you don’t see many platoons at all anymore. I continue to believe that 12-man pitching staffs are foolish, because the manager has to sacrifice offense at one position (at least) while benefiting very little from that last man in the bullpen.

But nobody listens to me. And I doubt if I’ll see much of Dallas McPherson (or Jake Fox) in 2010.

Due to the parks and leagues he's played in, McPherson's MLEs are a lot less impressive than his raw batting lines.

Rob may get to see that McPherson/Fox platoon...in Sacramento.

I remain convinced that McPherson would have been the real thing but for his injuries. An oft-told story, sure, but always sad to see.

He played in Japan 2009? I thought he was hurt again. Can't find stats for him - where did he play?

Earl Weaver would certainly agree about the 12-man pitching staff silliness.

Hm. He didn't mean 2008 since DMc spent 2008 in the PCL. So...

Kouzmanoff was a guy I was hoping the Red Sox would target. San Diego has killed him--he's a good hitter and good defender.

He played in Japan 2009?
Maybe he confused him with Scott McClain?

Due to the parks and leagues he's played in, McPherson's MLEs are a lot less impressive than his raw batting lines.

Not to mention that even in 2008 he was still K'ing in about 40% of his ABs in AAA.

You get the occasional freaks (usually short-lived) like Mark Reynolds and Russell Branyan, but in contrast to #2 I remain convinced he'd have never made it as a good hitter. (an average hitter maybe) Alas we'll likely never know.

There is no convincing argument that ends with "so Dallas McPherson can play".

We could take odds on whether McPherson or Chavez will hit the DL first. I agree with Rob though about excessive bullpenage.

BTW, anyone want to join a new Scoresheet AL keeper I'm starting? We have some great owners lined up, but we need 1 more (possibly 2). Scoresheet, IMO, is the most natural fantasy bb game for BBTFers, since you play simulated games with current stats. You won't ever have to experience that guilty feeling you get when trading for more steals or RBIs, as in trad roto. You know, the feeling you're betraying your knowledge of the game.

Interested? Email me at dantroy@hotmail.com

Btw, I believe Rob is involved with a sim game venture involving all-timers. Sounds like a Diamond Mind/strat online type of thing. I'll check that out when available.

I'm still hoping for a Chavez-Kouzmanoff platoon. Chakouzev. You can still platoon with the one spare OF and one spare IF.
   12. PJ Martinez Posted: January 17, 2010 at 04:05 AM (#3439510)
I think Chakouzmanev is a better name. But yeah.

Interestingly, UZR showed McPherson as a good fielder through 2006. Minus the injuries, he could have had value even with a low BA/OBP.

I played the Neyer game last night. It was good. Dummy Hoy's 1st inning homer allowed my 19th century all-stars to vanquish the Philadelphia A's!

My first reaction: nine guys in the lineup -- doesn't that mean he's counting a pitcher twice?

Then I realized he was talking about Sillyball.

i completely disagree with the 12 man pitching staff bashing, though that's probably because i'm a fan of an NL team. if we're talking about good players, there's a lot more marginal value you can get from a good 12th pitcher, than from a good 5th OFer, or a good third catcher.

Earl Weaver would certainly agree about the 12-man pitching staff silliness.

I could be wrong, but I'd bet that if Earl Weaver had his way, he'd have a 12-man pitching staff; except Weaver would have it as part of a 30-man roster.

The A's starting pitchers threw ~55 fewer innings than the average MLB team last year, the third fewest in baseball, and things don't look to be much better in 2010. They could probably use a 7th guy in the pen.
   19. Tripon Posted: January 17, 2010 at 08:51 PM (#3439826)
Didn't the Indians employ a 14 man pitching staff at one point last season? That was as much a reason to fire Eric Wedge as anything else.

I think that was only for a day, Tripon, but yeah. Fugly.

Five starters. Six relievers. Eight position players. Your bench consists of six men, one is a backup catcher.

You have five remaining players. One is an infielder who can handle short and second and can't even begin to hit. You have a corner man who can handle third and first and hopefully hit league average. You have a guy who can handle center, then a fifth outfielder with okay power who can play left and right. Then you have one immobile slug to stick at first or right if you must who is there mainly to pinch hit. He is likely a lefty.

This is the only acceptable roster construct in contemporary baseball.
