ESPN: Neyer: Who deserves to be bronzed?

What is that strange stretched out Dave Stieb statue?

image

With that in mind, let’s run through the other candidates for the statue-less ballparks.

What are the criteria? First, I think we’re looking for great player, either a Hall of Famer or just short (and yes, I’m happy to make an exception for home-town guys like Willie Horton and Frank White). And second, when you think of a player, you should think of this franchise (and yes, I’m happy to make exceptions for Ruth in Baltimore and Hank Aaron in Milwaukee). Can the Angels commission a Nolan Ryan statue? Sure. But he won a lot of games for the Astros and Rangers, too (and he’s got a statue in Arlington. Can the Diamondbacks erect a bronze version of Randy Johnson? Sure. He won four (straight!) Cy Youngs as a Diamondback. But he won more games as a Mariner.

Here are my top candidates, after just a bit of research:

Orioles - Cal Ripken (why hasn’t this happened already?)
Mets - Tom Seaver (ditto)
Twins - Kirby Puckett, Rod Carew, and someday probably Joe Mauer
Dodgers - Sandy Koufax, Sandy Koufax, and Sandy Koufax
Rockies - Todd Helton
Blue Jays - Dave Stieb (yeah, it’s a stretch)
Rays - Carl Crawford if they lock him up (and Evan Longoria if they don’t)
Marlins - Hanley Ramirez if they lock him up
Athletics - Rickey and Reggie both candidates, but played a lot for other teams
Angels - Garret Anderson? Tim Salmon? Brian Downing?
Diamondbacks - Randy Johnson, but only if they’re desperate

What about Tony Fernandez for the Jays? Ernie Whitt? Robbie Alomar?

I think Rickey works for the A's. I don't think Reggie does. What about McGwire?

Marlins - Jeff Conine!

Dodgers - c'mon, you know Tommy Lasorda is going to weasel his way into getting one.

How about A's career games and hits leader Campy Campaneris?

Interestingly, the only categories Jackson leads the A's in (even if limited to Oakland) is Ks and IBB. Either McGwire or Henderson (or both) top him in every other category. For Oakland performance, McGwire "deserves" it more than Jackson.

But we all know the correct answer is Canseco. :-)

Also, that was pretty early, I see -- Triplicate Girl hadn't yet become Duo Damsel. No Timber Wolf, Star Boy or Dream Girl yet, either, much less Insect Queen.

Good christ: Counting about 8 of the archives volumes that cover all of the early appearances that I can't afford, I think I own every damned Legion appearance as of last year -- something like 600 comics. How is it that your blog has never been brought to my attention before now?
   10. Rich Rifkin Posted: February 03, 2010 at 10:58 PM (#3453636)
For the Oakland A's (ignoring Philly and KC), if you are going to go with one position player, it would easily be Rickey. For one pitcher, there are a number of good choices: Eck, Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, Tim Hudson (highest career win %) and Rollie Fingers. But really, better than all of those guys is Dave Stewart. He's no HOFer. But he's from Oakland, he pitched his best on the A's, he was the A's best pitcher during a great run and he's extremely well liked by A's fans.
   11. Rich Rifkin Posted: February 03, 2010 at 11:06 PM (#3453642)
Dodgers - Sandy Koufax, Sandy Koufax, and Sandy Koufax
Maybe Koufax deserves it. But there is NO DOUBT that if they erected just one statue in front of Dodger Stadium, it would be of Jackie Robinson. Aside from the whole integration thing and the fact that he's the only player whose number has been retired across MLB, Robinson was from Los Angeles.

That said, Mike The Met Piazza deserves it more than Robinson as a Los Angeles Dodger. He's the best hitter in franchise history. Yet if I know Dodger fans, they would prefer a statue of Steve The Padre Garvey over Piazza. They highly overrate Garvey's forearms.
   12. Rich Rifkin Posted: February 03, 2010 at 11:16 PM (#3453649)
Angels - Garret Anderson? Tim Salmon? Brian Downing?
Garret Anderson. He's the franchise leader in games, AB, PA, runs, hits, total bases, singles, doubles, rbi, x-base hits, times on base, etc. He's in the career top 4 in avg., triples, home runs and runs created. Granted, the guy rarely walked and hence his on-base % and OPS were not all that great. But in terms of longevity stats, Garret wins.

So the Angels' should probably not have a statue. I like Conine for the Marlins because, unlike any of those guys with the Angels, Conine was the face of the franchise in its juvenile years. He was the Original Marlin. 'Course I doubt it'll happen, but I hope they at least retire his number.

Conine's return and savior role with the 2003 World Series team was poetic given his unceremonious dumping in favor of Darren Daulton during the 1997 run.

Koufax is third in line for me, behind Vin Scully and Jackie Robinson.

And did Rob really just ask if the Diamondbacks can erect a randy johnson? Yeah, if they hire cuter ballgirls, I guess.

For the A's I'd have to go with Reggie Jackon, Catfish Hunter, and Rickey Henderson. If they can build a ballpark in Oakland, I'd also like to see some kind of monument featuring the McClymonds High School outfield of Frank Robinson, Curt Flood and Vada Pinson. Maybe even a monument for all of the great major leaguers who played youth/high school ball in Oakland. Dave Stewart could be included in that one.

If an Angels statue, then Salmon, hands-down. Ryan wears another team's hat in the Hall of Fame, Anderson's peak can't touch Salmon's, Salmon was a career Angel, and there was that 2002 victory lap for the fans.

At current rates, I'd more expect a statue of Scioscia.

The item that was stolen from Camden Yards was Ripken's number, a large metal item on a base from the courtyard next to the Babe. Other Oriole numbers are so honored but only the one statue. Lots of possibilities: Jim Palmer statue with Cakes patting himself on the back, Earl Weaver grabbing a smoke in the runway, etc. Love to see one of Brooks Robinson making a play at 3rd on Lee May in the Series against the Reds.

That's incredibly pedantic, Charlie O. Your examples are (intentionally?) really stupid ones, too. Pasadena is directly adjacent to Los Angeles. You can walk from Pasadena to LA in literally one minute. Whereas Martinez is a 40-minute drive away from Oakland, with a bunch of other municipalities (not to mention a couple of wilderness parks) in between. Same thing for Livermore.

Also, Jackie Robinson, as I imagine you know but are choosing to ignore, left Georgia as an infant. He literally had no memory of ever having set foot in Georgia. He was "from Georgia" in the same sense that Roger Clemens is "from Ohio" and John McCain is "from Panama."
   55. Flynn Posted: February 04, 2010 at 11:24 AM (#3453837)

Cal Ripken, Brooks Robinson, and Jim Palmer don't have a statue, but an erroneously-rendered Babe Ruth as a schoolboy is there? Wierd. Maybe Boston will erect a statue of Tom Glavine as a kid, wearing skates and a Kings jersey?

Meanwhile, bronzing Dave Stieb in Toronto would not be as big a stretch as Josh Gibson in Washington.

I couldn't think of anyone that would be statued for the White Sox. Until I read the entry for the Rangers: Nolan Ryan. A good, simple design of a memorable moment, and I thought "Oh yeah, Robin Ventura!"

Not sure if the article mentions it or not, but the Braves currently have statues of Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, Phil Niekro, and Ty Cobb (who was from Georgia, though obviously never played for the Braves). I don't think there are statues of Eddie Mathews or Dale Murphy, though they'd be good candidates. I imagine that Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Chipper Jones, and Bobby Cox will join the ranks eventually.

I'd tend to err on the side of having less statues than too many. If the Braves started putting up Bob Horner and Jeff Blauser statues, the whole exercise would seem pretty pointless.

Well, the Babe Ruth Museum is only a short walk from Camden Yards. Ruth's formative years were in Baltimore, and his first OB team was the Baltimore Orioles of the International League. It's not as if he was just born there.

Apparently the Babe Ruth RH glove thing isn't a error. Apparently Cardinal Gibbons School for Boy (or wherever) didn't have any left-handed gloves, so the young Babe Ruth growing up in Baltimore had to use a RH glove. That's what the Camden Yards tour said, anyway. I think they are just trying to cover themselves.

God,

I guess we see geography and hometowns differently, though I won't say your way is stupid -- just different than mine.

I know Jackie Robinson left Georgia as a child and that Pasadena is about ten miles from downtown Los Angeles. If he was born or raised in Los Angeles, I'd say he was from Los Angeles. But he wasn't so I don't.

And if takes you 40 minutes to get from Oakland to Martinez, you're taking the wrong roads.

On Google Maps, it says the drive time from Martinez to the Oakland Coliseum is 39 minutes (59 minutes in traffic). By contrast, it's 8 minutes from Pasadena to Dodger Stadium.

Maybe so, but that's a true story. I've seen plenty of pictures of Ruth in a righthander's glove, including a team picture that's in in Dan Daniel's 1948 biography of him.

Interesting stuff about Ruth and the glove.

Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax? Are you kidding me? If they took a fan vote now, the winners would be Fernando Valenzuela then Kirk Gibson. Garvey's popeye image has turned into a train wreck.
