ESPN NY:  Simon:  Tip of the cap to Eckstein

Earlier this year, Eckstein homered, and I sent Jayson Stark a note that this made Ecsktein the “Post-Joe Morgan Era Little Guy Home Run Champion.”

Translation: Eckstein’s 35 home runs are the most by any player, listed by Baseball-Reference.com as being 5-foot-7 or shorter, since 1985 (one better than Warren Newson.

Yesterday, with the help of the Elias Sports Bureau, I confirmed something else about Eckstein that I found remarkable. It explained why the thought crossed my mind, one out from a Mets win, “I wonder if they should walk him.”

The key is the word "listed". Dustin Pedroia (50 HR) is listed as 5'9. But then again, Eckstein probably isn't really 5'7 either.

I think Voros was a big Warren Newson fan.

Warren Newson was awesome. The Deacon! Although, to be fair, he would have been taller than 5'7 if he had had a neck.

I actually had no idea Morgan was so short. I find that astounding.

Scrappy and clutchy!! Why I do believe I feel a swoon coming on!

Donnie Sadler is the HR leader since 1985 among players shorter than 5'7".

Proving that I paid for P-I, Berra is your 5'7" or shorter HR leader with 358, followed by Morgan at 268 and Hack Wilson at 244. Those are the only three over 100. We get plenty in the 5'8" to 5'10" range led by Mays at 660 and Ott at 511. If you look at the midget class (5'5" or shorter) Freddie Patek leads with 41. Willie Keeler is your leader at 5'4" with 12. Apparently nobody listed at 5'3" or shorter (post-1900) -- o has amassed even 1,000 PA -- Mike McCormick got 398 PA -- or ever hit a HR (post-1900). Yo-Yo Davalillo (1953 Senators) appears to be the last 5'3" position player.

No pitchers at 5'3". Frank Morrissey seems to be the greatest 5'4" pitcher of all time with a 127 ERA+ in 44 IP. Connie Marrerro, 5'5", threw 735 innings with a 108 ERA+ (from the ages 38-42!) for the 50-54 Senators which overlaps with Davalillo. They probably both played with the Washington Generals too. :-)

[7] FTFA:

Check out this stat, compiled thanks to Baseball-Reference's Play Index

Eckstein has come to bat 29 times in the ninth inning or later in a regular season or postseason game in the following situation.

* One out from defeat

* Opportunity to tie game (one-run down, or representing tying/winning run)

He's succeeded in either extending the game, or putting his team ahead, with either a hit, walk, or hit by pitch 13 times. That's a 45 percent success rate. Wow.

Gee, thanks Dan.

David Eckstein is a little biotch.

re #8: "extending the game" with a walk might be success for (David with a sling) Eckstein, but it was defined as a failure for Ted (Goliath) Williams, who 'should have' tried to drive the run in.

Pat Tabler's clutch stats were better. He just wasn't as scrappy and cool as little David.
