Disappointed at not being able to see Taveras's deathmarch to 500 PAs in Cincinnati, though.
Under...way under...I'd pick March 31 or whenever rosters need to be at 25.
I was debating whether it's a net win for the Reds, just for the fact that now they can't give 400+ PAs to Taveras, but Miles seems like the sort of guy Baker would develop an irrational affinity for.
Even then, though, I can't see him getting as much PT as Taveras would have.
One of whom -- Rajai Davis -- would seem to be the same (type of) player.
I said it in the Cabrera thread, I'll say it here: How bad does a guy have to suck for a fan to celebrate his team's getting Aaron Miles in return?
And yes, I realize the answer is "he has to suck Willy Taveras-bad."
I'm guessing Tavares is more tradable than Miles because of his ability to steal bases.
Of course, Baker probably liked Tavares for exactly that reason!
It seems to me that the Mets and A's, for different reasons, get a lot of attention for stuff they do that really doesn't matter. The Gary Matthews Jr. trade was a similar one. There was a lot of hubbub about that deal when in reality his presence on the Met roster is pretty meaningless. This deal is very similar. It's pretty meaningless but because it's Billy Beane it's going to get 75 comments at a minimum.
That and it's Aaron Miles, which will draw out some of the Cub fans.

I assume Rosales has an option left? Can he play SS? I guess he's an improvement over Petit and Miles as the utility IF, if he can play SS...
Well, I'm commenting at the amazingness of somebody trading for Aaron Miles--got nothing to do with Beane. YMMV, etc.
EDIT: Coke to Emeigh.
Did I miss the thread on Gabe Gross?
While I'd normally agree with you, this is a matter of a team taking on a $4M a year committement to a player who is both terrible and (given the A's roster) redundant, for the sole purpose of acquiring a utility infielder. No matter the teams involved, this sort of move would normally draw about 75 comments worth of confusion and mockery.
Currently, I'm favoring the confusion theme.
And defend. Tavares has tactical use - you just don't want him in your lineup (hitting). Miles is below replacement level at this point.
Not sure how I feel about this deal, without knowing the ptbnl/$ end - Rosales is fine, I guess, but the A's have quite a few 'fine, I guess' guys in their system already.

Wow. That's pretty sweet.
EDIT: Gross too. He does the same thing as Buck and Sweeney, but with no upside instead of a little bit of upside.
There's still a chance for the Reds to reacquire him after the A's cut him, then. Excellent.
Is Miles limited to 2nd base? There's no way he's playing ahead of Brandon Phillips. I would be surprised if Miles actually makes the team. He seems to help a bit with depth in case of injuries.
With Taveras on the Reds, you can just see Dusty benching Drew Stubbs after a 1-10 opening series and going with Taveras. That situation just doesn't apply to Miles and anyone the Reds have in the infield.
Didn't stop Jose Macias.
For as much as I'm snarking the trade, I agree with this.
I don't get the Crisp signing, either, but he's a lot better than Taveras at the plate.
I thought there were still serious questions about the health of Branyan's back.
But Tavares on the A's ... in a deal in which the A's lose money? Billy Beane has jumped the shark!!
Why do I have this scary feeling that Tavares is about to land on the Cubs as 5th OF?
Bite your tongue.
I'd like to think the Cubs' now possessing a non-platoon CF would eliminate that possibility, but what do I know.
Difference being, Frequent Flyer Miles are actually useful.
Perhaps that'd be a good nickname for A Miles, having been traded twice in one offseason...
Looks like the "unders" have it.
What the ####### #### is going on in Oakland? They're just straight-out eating $4M on Tavares, with the only return being a utility guy? Surely there was some AAA guy floating around out there for the league minimum, rather than trading for an instant-DFA.
I will say, Rosales's experience has been at short as much as anywhere - you could plug him directly into the Miles role today and it's an upgrade.
***
EDIT:
Surely there was some AAA guy floating around out there for the league minimum.
Yeah, but are they better? (Clearly, Oakland wouldn't think so.) Also, Miles wasn't sticking around - the cost difference here is closer to 900K (1.3M - 400K).
Like Steve Tolleson.
I would, if the Cubs had not already traded Miles to the A's. Exchanging paying $2.7 million to Miles for paying $4.0 million for Tavares doesn't look so good.
It's not quite that bad--Miles makes $2.7M. They basically bought Rosales for $1.3M. Of course, Miles was the dead weight who came along with Jake Fox, who they basically bought for $1.7M.
(This assumes the A's get to keep the $1M the Cubs sent along with Miles).
And Tolleson? He seems like a worse version of Sogard.
Well, they can now trade Taveras, but they're kidding themselves if they think anyone's taking on that salary without a decent return. Like, somebody even better than Adam Rosales.
Nope.
Then again, bad though Taveras is, I have to think he's more useful than Miles--he can play center, and is genuinely fast. Miles is a useless hitter from both sides of the plate, isn't fast, and can't play any position other than second passably.
Neither of them's worth anywhere near what he's being paid, of course, but I think Taveras could have SOME use (in very small doses) to a major league team. Miles really doesn't.
I guess that's one way to get the MLBPA off your back about being too cheap.
Sogard, conversely, really should only be a second baseman, but the bat has some promise.
I'm guessing that this (Tolleson) is a waive-and-outright type deal.
I also suspect that the Reds will be paying part of his salary.
-- MWE
I'd be a bit surprised by this, since the Reds were reported (coming into the offseason) as being very interested in cutting salaries. However, it is certainly possible.
Tolleson reminds me (statwise, not watching him) a bit of Corey Wimberly, a comp that won't occur to many.
How do you figure? Tolleson is white. Wimberly is black. They are completely different!
MLBTR cites a report that says Tolleson's ceiling is "Ryan Freel" which really ain't that bad if he's cheap and coming off the bench and staying out of clubs.
The A's now have 10 days to make some sort of move with Taveras. I can't imagine that anyone would trade for him without Oakland kicking in some dollars
Dayton Moore and Omar Minaya still have jobs.
Miles is going to make $2.7 million. However, if I remember the Cubs trade correctly, Chicago will pay $1 million of that contract. So the A's only owed Miles $1.7 million for 2010.
Yeah, but Ankiel got promised center... of course, what kind of name is Angel Pagan? Let's see a Sarge/Tavares battle in NY this spring. :)
I almost expect Tavares to end up in Minnesota. The only reason to doubt it is that the Reds and Twins seem to be common trading partners and would rather just trade with one another than go through such strange hoops with the A's. I don't particularly want Punto in CF for anything other than emergency duty.
Right, but AR's point is that from the Cubs' perspective, the benefit of getting rid of Miles at his 2.7MM salary is neutralized by taking on Taveras and his 4MM. And of course, that's even more so if the Cubs were eating some of Miles's salary to start with.
The idea of a Sweeney-Crisp-Davis OF seems a little strange too, though obviously great defensively. I would have thought they'd want ot give Michael Taylor a chance to be a masher. But maybe that's for next year. You've also got Eric Patterson. The Sacramento OF will probably outhit the big league one this year, even if you use an MLE to compare.
That may be Ankiel's biggest contribution, if he hadn't signed for another week or so Taveras has Royal pickup written all over him.
Except he didn't play for the Braves.
Patterson's out of options, so he'll likely be elsewhere. But, yeah, the Sacramento lineup on some nights will likely be better than the one in Oakland.
Donaldson C SuzukiCarter 1B Barton
Sogard 2B Ellis
Fox 3B Kouzmanoff
Cardenas SS Pennington
Doolittle LF Rajai
Buck CF Crisp
Taylor RF Sweeney
McPherson DH Cust
Defense would be another story...
Can you confirm? I've seen contradictory things here.
I've switched my user name back to an older one because of that comment.
He must be really disappointed this offseason, with the A's trading for Taylor and Crisp.
I know he's fat as a bear in August, and wasn't great last year, but the overall stats don't look half bad.
Yeah, at this point I almost hope the A's deal him somewhere he'll get a chance to play, instead of all this dicking around.
Him and Barton, actually.
Pretty impressive prediction there.
Always promising when the writer can't figure out why your team did something.
But, Eveland and Gallagher pissed off the A's management something fierce last spring (and Buck a few months later). I don't know if was attitude or ineffectiveness, but they were definitely pissed at those guys. Not sure if he was ever coming back from that, same as the other two.
I took a moment to look at your history...you have a gift.
Should Petit not get picked up on waivers, he can declare free agency, if he chooses.
