ESPN/Olney: Reds acquire Miles in trade with A’s

The Cincinnati Reds acquired infielder Aaron Miles in a trade with the Oakland Athletics, swapping young infielder Adam Rosales and outfielder Willy Taveras.

The $1.3 million the Reds save with this deal helps offset some of the money they just committed in signing shortstop Orlando Cabrera.

For Oakland, a primary motivation could be the addition of a useful utilityman who will be inexpensive.

I suppose the A’s had to take Taveras to get Rosales. Although 26 is hardly *young*.

Awesome.

Disappointed at not being able to see Taveras's deathmarch to 500 PAs in Cincinnati, though.

This is pretty hilarious, although Taveras on the A's seems odd.

I'll ask it here as well - what are the A's going to do with Tavares? I thought they already had too many outfielders.

Under...way under...I'd pick March 31 or whenever rosters need to be at 25.

Dusty Baker and Aaron Miles are a match made in heaven.

I was debating whether it's a net win for the Reds, just for the fact that now they can't give 400+ PAs to Taveras, but Miles seems like the sort of guy Baker would develop an irrational affinity for.

Even then, though, I can't see him getting as much PT as Taveras would have.

One of whom -- Rajai Davis -- would seem to be the same (type of) player.

I said it in the Cabrera thread, I'll say it here: How bad does a guy have to suck for a fan to celebrate his team's getting Aaron Miles in return?

And yes, I realize the answer is "he has to suck Willy Taveras-bad."

I'm guessing Tavares is more tradable than Miles because of his ability to steal bases.

Of course, Baker probably liked Tavares for exactly that reason!

I would assume that the A's made this deal with Rosales as the primary return, not Taveras. He's had some success in the minors and is still young enough to have a career. Aaron Miles is...well Aaron Miles.

It seems to me that the Mets and A's, for different reasons, get a lot of attention for stuff they do that really doesn't matter. The Gary Matthews Jr. trade was a similar one. There was a lot of hubbub about that deal when in reality his presence on the Met roster is pretty meaningless. This deal is very similar. It's pretty meaningless but because it's Billy Beane it's going to get 75 comments at a minimum.

I can't imagine Taveras sticks with the A's, who already have plenty of guys who can play CF (Crisp, Davis, Sweeney, Gross). Miles was dead weight, so it looks like they're basically buying Adam Rosales. Do the A's keep the money the Cubs sent along with Miles ($1M)?

I assume Rosales has an option left? Can he play SS? I guess he's an improvement over Petit and Miles as the utility IF, if he can play SS...

While I'd normally agree with you, this is a matter of a team taking on a $4M a year committement to a player who is both terrible and (given the A's roster) redundant, for the sole purpose of acquiring a utility infielder. No matter the teams involved, this sort of move would normally draw about 75 comments worth of confusion and mockery.

Currently, I'm favoring the confusion theme.

And defend. Tavares has tactical use - you just don't want him in your lineup (hitting). Miles is below replacement level at this point.

Not sure how I feel about this deal, without knowing the ptbnl/$ end - Rosales is fine, I guess, but the A's have quite a few 'fine, I guess' guys in their system already.

Ryan Garko was pretty much the worst player ever after the Giants traded for him. Maybe that's just because the NL is such a superior league, but would it have been that much more expensive to keep Branyan?

Unless my math is wrong (always possible), this deal plus the Gross signing puts the A's at 42 players on the 40 man roster. So my guess is another transaction is forthcoming.

Dusty Baker and Aaron Miles are a match made in heaven.

Is Miles limited to 2nd base? There's no way he's playing ahead of Brandon Phillips. I would be surprised if Miles actually makes the team. He seems to help a bit with depth in case of injuries.

With Taveras on the Reds, you can just see Dusty benching Drew Stubbs after a 1-10 opening series and going with Taveras. That situation just doesn't apply to Miles and anyone the Reds have in the infield.

Miles will definitely make the team (I'd imagine Jocketty likes him too) as the backup IF. Of course he's not starting in front of anybody. The problem with Miles, beyond his anemic bat, is he can't really play SS. If you're the backup 2B/3B/LF/RF type, you better hit better than Miles.

But Tavares on the A's ... in a deal in which the A's lose money? Billy Beane has jumped the shark!!

Why do I have this scary feeling that Tavares is about to land on the Cubs as 5th OF?

I'd like to think the Cubs' now possessing a non-platoon CF would eliminate that possibility, but what do I know.

What the ####### #### is going on in Oakland? They're just straight-out eating $4M on Tavares, with the only return being a utility guy? Surely there was some AAA guy floating around out there for the league minimum, rather than trading for an instant-DFA.
   45. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: February 01, 2010 at 06:44 PM (#3451687)
FWIW, ZiPS says of Rosales... 86 OPS+, average range at first and the corner outfield spots, poor range and a bit error prone at second, third, and short. I think that's underselling him a bit on defense (you could make a case that he's closer to average than poor - I think splitting the difference and calling him fair is about right), but I'm not sure that's worth 1.3M + whatever else is being given up here, even with the years of cost control, given the guys just beneath him in the pipeline.
I will say, Rosales's experience has been at short as much as anywhere - you could plug him directly into the Miles role today and it's an upgrade.
***
EDIT:
Surely there was some AAA guy floating around out there for the league minimum.
Yeah, but are they better? (Clearly, Oakland wouldn't think so.) Also, Miles wasn't sticking around - the cost difference here is closer to 900K (1.3M - 400K).

I would, if the Cubs had not already traded Miles to the A's. Exchanging paying $2.7 million to Miles for paying $4.0 million for Tavares doesn't look so good.

It's not quite that bad--Miles makes $2.7M. They basically bought Rosales for $1.3M. Of course, Miles was the dead weight who came along with Jake Fox, who they basically bought for $1.7M.

(This assumes the A's get to keep the $1M the Cubs sent along with Miles).

And Tolleson? He seems like a worse version of Sogard.

Well, they can now trade Taveras, but they're kidding themselves if they think anyone's taking on that salary without a decent return. Like, somebody even better than Adam Rosales.

Just read the A's press release: Taveras was DFA'd before even being placed on the 40 (along with Dana Eveland, to make room for Gross). Also, they claimed Steve Tolleson from the Twins, with a corresponding move to make room for him on the 40 to be announced shortly.

Nope.

Then again, bad though Taveras is, I have to think he's more useful than Miles--he can play center, and is genuinely fast. Miles is a useless hitter from both sides of the plate, isn't fast, and can't play any position other than second passably.

Neither of them's worth anywhere near what he's being paid, of course, but I think Taveras could have SOME use (in very small doses) to a major league team. Miles really doesn't.

   54. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: February 01, 2010 at 06:53 PM (#3451709)
Tolleson reminds me (statwise, not watching him) a bit of Corey Wimberly, a comp that won't occur to many. Rangy wherever you stick him, but too error prone to be that useful defensively. Can't really hit that well. See Fred Bynum too (though the three have pretty different hitting profiles).

Sogard, conversely, really should only be a second baseman, but the bat has some promise.

I'm guessing that this (Tolleson) is a waive-and-outright type deal.
   55. Andere Richtingen Posted: February 01, 2010 at 06:53 PM (#3451710)
I wonder if the DFA was made simply to move an interested party along in trading for him.

I also suspect that the Reds will be paying part of his salary.
   56. Mike Emeigh Posted: February 01, 2010 at 06:54 PM (#3451715)
The A's now have 10 days to make some sort of move with Taveras. I can't imagine that anyone would trade for him without Oakland kicking in some dollars, so my best guess is that the A's will release him and someone else will pick him up on a minor league/NRI deal. There's no question in my mind that the A's had to take him to get rid of Miles.

How do you figure? Tolleson is white. Wimberly is black. They are completely different!

MLBTR cites a report that says Tolleson's ceiling is "Ryan Freel" which really ain't that bad if he's cheap and coming off the bench and staying out of clubs.

I almost expect Tavares to end up in Minnesota. The only reason to doubt it is that the Reds and Twins seem to be common trading partners and would rather just trade with one another than go through such strange hoops with the A's. I don't particularly want Punto in CF for anything other than emergency duty.

Right, but AR's point is that from the Cubs' perspective, the benefit of getting rid of Miles at his 2.7MM salary is neutralized by taking on Taveras and his 4MM. And of course, that's even more so if the Cubs were eating some of Miles's salary to start with.

Tavares didn't last long as an A. Given their OF depth I don't understand a lot of their moves anyway. Gabe Gross is just an older, less upside version of Travis Buck. I'm guessing Buck has an option left and will be in Sacramento this year.

The idea of a Sweeney-Crisp-Davis OF seems a little strange too, though obviously great defensively. I would have thought they'd want ot give Michael Taylor a chance to be a masher. But maybe that's for next year. You've also got Eric Patterson. The Sacramento OF will probably outhit the big league one this year, even if you use an MLE to compare.

Thanks, Danny. Obviously, the '07 option is where I've seen disagreement. If that's what happened, that's probably stupid.

Eveland seems like he might be useful on the back end of a staff - any Oakland people here care to weigh in?

I know he's fat as a bear in August, and wasn't great last year, but the overall stats don't look half bad.

Buck is playing CF in AAA? I didn't realize that.

Yeah, at this point I almost hope the A's deal him somewhere he'll get a chance to play, instead of all this dicking around.
Him and Barton, actually.

Pretty impressive prediction there.

Eveland will get a ton of groundballs and walk too many guys, which means he allows a lot of baserunners but is stingy with the homers and extra base hits. He leans heavily on a good infield defense, but he's less horrible than the 12th guy on some staffs.

I don't understand designating Eveland before ever trying him in the bullpen. He seems just the type of marginal stuff starter who could pick up 3-4 mph if he only had to throw one inning. He sits 89-90, but he flashed 95 a few times in 08, and had occasional games he worked 91-93. He's got a good slider. If he's sitting 93, plus the slider, ditching his weaker cutter, change, and cb (for the most part), idk, he might be good. Dana Eveland only just turned 26 in October too. I know it seems like he's been around forever, but he's young.

But, Eveland and Gallagher pissed off the A's management something fierce last spring (and Buck a few months later). I don't know if was attitude or ineffectiveness, but they were definitely pissed at those guys. Not sure if he was ever coming back from that, same as the other two.

As a Mets fan I have to protest a little. GMJ is the perfectly emblematic Minaya signing. He nudges the club away from rather than towards contending. Having GMJ as your 4th OFer (an important position given Pagan's past fragility) while Beltran is out practically guarantees you'll lose value from that spot on the roster, something that should never voluntarily happen with a largest market club. It was interesting to me that until this admittedly minor deal there were still a fair number of Mets fans on this site who were holding out hope that Minaya would still make something of this offseason. After the news broke, though, it seemed even the diehards gave in to despair. The deal was so simply, blatantly stupid that the FO had no more cover, and even faint optimimism was no longer sustainable.

I'd think Eveland has some trade value. Maybe they can convince someone to take Taveras for the privilege of having Eveland. I'd think Petit would clear waivers. Rosales may be better than Miles but he can't be the main utility option. I'm still hoping they can trade Eveland, Tavares, Rosales and Petit for a real utility player -- the first utility guy to be traded for four players!

Gross is boring and limited, but effective in that role: plus glove, hits righties okay.
Should Petit not get picked up on waivers, he can declare free agency, if he chooses.
