ESPN Page 2: These Ducks are waiting for “the call”

Holy Bucky Jacobsen! Jeff Pearlman investigates the less-than-mighty Ducks of Long Island and their 13 former MLBers (Carl Everett, Jose Offerman, Donovan Osborne, et al) who sure would listen if they got “the call.”

In eight seasons of Ducks baseball, a mere four players—Carlos Baerga, Pedro Borbon Jr., Bill Pulsipher and Ken Ray—have gone from Long Island to the majors. For the rest, from Doug Jennings in 2001 to Kevin McGlinchy in 2003 to John Rocker in 2005 and Juan Gonzalez in 2006, the promise of the Atlantic League’s model franchise has been a tease. They came, they played (often well), they, umm, vanished.

Poof!

So maybe, for the sake of narrative, the story here is not about making a comeback, per se, so much as, well, a truly unique undiscovered reality TV show.

Hat tip to Deadspin, where we also learn that Bud Harrelson likes to insult the little people.

The Royals just signd Derek Wathan from them to fill a void in Omaha. Osborne was terrible for Omaha last year.

I would think Halama and Graves could still have value to a team. Heck, they could probably pitch for St. Louis. Jorge Piedra could probably play for someone.

Danny Graves has zero value. Zero.

I'd watch that show.

also Jorge Piedra signed with Oakland. He's in Sacramento now, I think.

Graves was an egotistical "little" jerk who thought his poop didn't stink while in the bigs.

A 7 foot attitude in a 5 foot man.

He treated fans like dirt in the majors, how's he liking it now on Long Island?

ray navarette looks kind of intriguing. I mean, Everett & Alfonzo just played in the majors last year, and he's hitting much better than they are (and he plays 2nd base).

that's a fantastic article.
