ESPN: Royals, Guillen agree to preliminary 3-year, $36M deal

Maleta Guillen…moving on to 9th team in 12 years.

Outfielder Jose Guillen and the Kansas City Royals have reached a preliminary agreement for a three year, $36 million deal, a relative of the ballplayer told ESPNdeportes.com.

The agreement will be complete when Guillen passes a physical exam, scheduled for Tuesday.

...Last week, Guillen was questioned by the commissioner’s office about his appearance on a list of baseball players who bought human growth hormone and steroids from a clinic in Florida, which is under federal investigation.

36\3.
For An average RFer's decline phase.

What do you suppose Dayton Moore is thinking...

Yeah bidding against yourself!

There were rumors the Orioles were interested. There but for the grace of G-d...

It may work out fine for them, at least it's only three years and there's a solid chance he'll maintain averagish production through it. The real question is whether the Royals will want him around for that long.

Considering this is a rare Royals thread but wouldn't trading Gathright to the Marlins trade make sense for both teams? The Royals already have Dejesus and the Royals could probably get a relief arm or two.

Yikes, that's a lot more money than I was expecting. Oh well, its just money.

Gathright to Florida makes sense, but the Marlins seem to be intent on having trade rumors about acquiring centerfielders every year, without ever acquiring one.

There have been Gathright to Texas rumors for SS Joaquin Arias.

But if the O's had signed Guillen, where would they play Darin Erstad?

Um, what? Why on earth would they do this?

Not sure if you're talking about Guillen, Jeff, but my Erstad comment was tongue-in-cheek.

This is dumber than the Meche contract. :-)

In this context, $56M/4yrs remaining on JD Drew isn't looking so bad. Anybody want him?

Jermaine Dye 2/22 is beggining to look like a steal.
   13. Valentine Posted: December 04, 2007 at 07:18 PM (#2634196)
Agreed on Dye. He's not the greatest player in the world, but the price is right and there's no risk on a two-year deal.

And the Yankees' contract with Posada looks better and better.

That seems like a lot. But the Royals need some players who can actually hit (their team OPS+ last year was 85).

The Royals have to overpay. And they have money to spend. As long as the years aren't crazy I'm okay with it. I think Guillen should be fairly solid over the course of this deal.

I'm not thrilled with the deal but I can't figure out what Moore's other options for left field could have been. Finding mediocre short-term solutions for significant holes isn't the worst way to move toward .500 while developing the young players that might actually contend for something someday.

Deal is done, pending a physical

Deal is $33.6 million, not $36 million.

Kansas City is also talking to free agent center fielder Andruw Jones and has said that the deal with Guillen will not put an end to those talks.

Royals actually had money to spend! Tried to get Hunter, got outbid. Who else is there that is established hitter that the Royals could get? If they were outbid on Guillen, then what? Plus due to the RoyalsFactor, they sometimes have to pay more than other teams to attract the same player.

Saving the money to sign draft picks, improve scouting, etc. might have been a viable option, but the Royals at some point have to win a few more games to avoid the stigma, which does have an economic effect, of being one of the worst teams in baseball history over a several year span.

So have they just decided that DeJesus will never be completely healthy?

And all accounts say they are actually doing both. Baseball is awash in cash.

I don't know about his real life defense, but his OF2-37 is always a big positive.

I assume it's more that they've decided (learned?) that DeJesus and Teahen are all they have to trade who will return something useful.

And that both have such similar skill sets, it doesn't make sense to have both.
