ESPN: Sanchez’s Opening Day status uncertain

SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez underwent left shoulder surgery and might not be ready by Opening Day.

Manager Bruce Bochy confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday night that Sanchez had a recent arthroscopic procedure. Bochy first told KNBR radio of Sanchez’s surgery.

Sanchez had left knee surgery late in the 2009 season.

Bochy said Sanchez might not be fully recovered by opening day.

“He’s going to be a little delayed,” Bochy said in a phone interview. “It’ll be close if he can go opening day or not.”

The 32-year-old Sanchez was bothered by injuries to his left shoulder and left knee last season after joining the Giants on July 29 in a trade from Pittsburgh and played in only 25 games with San Francisco.

San Francisco acquired Sanchez to help them make a playoff push, but he has spent more time injured than on the field and the Giants missed the postseason for a sixth straight year. Sanchez has repeatedly called that “disappointing” and understands why fans were frustrated.

You don't have to be Fellini to understand that cover.

Maybe you do have to be Fellini to get the connection between the cover and Freddy Sanchez being injured.

Or maybe I'm just dense.

Suffering Sappho! That is an awesome phrase. I think I'll annoy my girlfriend by making it my new catchphrase at home. (Hers is "are you kidding me?" which she claims to have only started using since she's known me.)

And I like Freddy Sanchez, but the guy is made of glass.

The geography is wrong on that comic cover as the Empire State Building is on 34th St. That's the only thing I noticed.

"Suffering Sappho"?
   5. Crispix Attacks Posted: January 22, 2010 at 03:36 PM (#3444047)
A search for "Nubia" gives no results on BB-ref.com. The cover's mystery is still unanswered.

In antiquity Sappho was known for (allegedly) leaping to her death when her lover Phaon lost interest in her. This was how most people thought of her through the 19th century, as the poet who jumped to her death for love. So Wonder Woman attached to the bomb is falling sort of like Sappho going over the cliff. It's an impressively obscure reference.

Ok. So, how is it related to this story?
   8. Yankee Redneck is a Pinhead. Posted: January 22, 2010 at 04:17 PM (#3444110)
No, it's clearly a secret message luring our children towards Sapphic erotica.
   9. Crispix Attacks Posted: January 22, 2010 at 04:20 PM (#3444126)
I knew we must have someone around here who knows all about the popular notions of classical mythological figures at various points in the 20th century, but I wouldn't have guessed that that person was "Sexy Lizard".

It's not, really. Wonder Woman (particularly that era, probably early 70's, where cheesy catchphrases were de rigeur) says "Suffering Sappho" all the time.

No, Nubia was Wonder Womans black sister. She briefly replaced Diana.

70's comics obviously.
   16. Walt Davis Posted: January 22, 2010 at 11:12 PM (#3444651)
Presumably the Sanchez connection is the old "well, if it's not one thing, it's another."

So here we have Wonder Woman. It's bad enough that she's obviously fallen victim to somebody's little bondage fantasy but she's tied to a bomb that's falling through the air, presumably to explode when it hits the ground, and, as if that's not enough, a bunch of planes are shooting at her. Now that's a bad day.

True, perhaps more appropriate for the GMJ-Mets thread with Wonder Woman representing Mets fans.

Well, lovely. This is the other shoulder, not the one that was hurt and put him on the DL in August.

So, on one hand, I'm glad it wasn't the same one, as it really makes me question the decision to re-sign him with unresolved medical issues. On the other hand, the fact that he's had multiple injuries combined with his age, makes me question the decision to re-sign him.

I think it's safe to say it was a bit of a questionable decision for the Giants to re-sign him.

OK, but let's get the rules straight: do different categories of porn, drugs, or booze count as different areas? Just want to know.

This should offer encouragement to Giants' fans: It was exactly one year ago today that the Cardinals made the surprise announcement that Troy Glaus had just had arthroscopic shoulder surgery and was doubtful for opening day. And in the end, he bounced back to have . . . well, 29 ABs in September.

Who reheats pizza? That's like saying you're an expert at tits on bulls.

Yeah, this is bad news for the Giants, but everybody knew that when they signed Sanchez to the extension in the first place.

At least Eugenio Velez is happy at this news. This probably means he has a lock on a utility/"4th outfielder" spot on the Opening Day roster. Sucks to be Andres Torres, though! (and either John Bowker or Freddy Lewis)

I'm really really good at re-heating pizza, too. The trick is to use a little olive oil and a frying pan. The microwave just makes the crust soggy.

Agreed. And heat the pan fully first, before adding the oil and then the pizza. Hot and quick. At the moment the cheese begins to melt, it's ready.

As we all know, b-r comp lists are destiny and Sanchez's is entertaining.

His #1 comp (3 of the last 4 seasons) is someone named Cotton Tierney. He didn't play at all after age 31.
His #2 is someone named Fresco Thompson. He had 1 AB (one!) after age 31.
His #6 is someone named Tony Piet. He didn't play after age 31.

Now the other guys on that list weren't complete disasters -- all had at least 379 games after age 31 -- but it can't be good that 3 of 10 comps never played again.

Wow, Eric Young was still playing in 2006.

This is almost always true. Kashi thin crust, however, does wonderfully well after 40 seconds in the 'wave. Not sure why, but the ensuing texture is sensational.

I always used the broiler, making sure to heat the cookie sheet before setting the pizza on it. I figure it's pretty much the same as an actual pizza oven (well, that conveyor/broiler thing most places use), but it's easy to burn it if you're not paying attention.

However, if the pizza is from a chain place, you may as well eat it cold. For some reason, the worse the pizza is, the better it is cold.

Well, that would be because the less heat, the less flavor (and aroma) is drawn out.

Brush a little olive oil on top. That usually takes care of it.

this is the most useful thread I've ever come across.

The trick to reheating pasta is to drape a damp paper towel over the top of it before tossing it in the microwave.
