Having a guy who could hit a homer on the bench is a nice change of pace. Heck, having a guy who could hit a homer on the field would be a nice change of pace.

Jacobs seems like he'd have a tough time in the new park. Plus the fact that he sucks at hitting, and apparently can't field either...

I really hope Murphy comes around this year. I'm not betting on it, but stranger things have happened.

Apparently? When Billy Butler was coming up through the minors, the general scouting consensus was that he was historically bad in the field. And yet it took only a week before the Royals decided they'd rather play Butler at 1B than Jacobs.

I'm not expecting it (really!), but if Frenchie actually hits well, is half of BTF going to need to be put on suicide watch for lack of purpose and life confusion?

Also, this Jacobs thing is laughable.

Which part? The signing, or the discussion of the signing?

Why, Lassus? The Mets need a first baseman for Buffalo.

Oh, wait . . . .

Well. The man is capable of a .260/.320/.480. He also seems to be a solid bet for -20 runs in the field at first if used for the whole season.

If the Mets were going to sign a guy who could hit, but is better suited to be a DH even though they can't use one in their league, might I suggest that Johnny Damon actually fulfills the first part of the role a hell of a lot better than Mike Jacobs?
   15. bobm Posted: February 10, 2010 at 03:50 PM (#3457768)
[14] Hopefully Boras will get desperate enough to convince Damon to accept a minor league deal from the Mets, because they don't seem to have the money to spend otherwise.

Damon costs millions on a guaranteed contract and creates an instant position controversy. Given that the FO was crippled to the extent that they couldn't sign obviously appropriate players, the chances of signing a guy like Damon must be pretty close to zero.
   18. Sam M. Posted: February 10, 2010 at 04:13 PM (#3457789)
Just to be clear, I don't actually want Damon. The point is, I don't want ANY guys who are best suited to be DHs, since the Mets don't play in the American League. There is no reason at all to be signing Mike Jacobs; any case you can make for him at all would be better made for Damon, and the Mets should have the resources to sign him. But again, I don't want him, either.

I really hope Murphy comes around this year. I'm not betting on it, but stranger things have happened.

I really think Murphy has a chance to be decent, meaning an OPS over .800 with average defense. He's only 25 so there should be some natural improvement, he showed better power than expected, he did seem to make adjustments and improve as the year went on, he walked less than his minor league numbers would indicate and his BA was low for a player who strikes out so rarely. Of course, that's not great production from first base, but I think 1b will turn out to be less of an issue than the fact that the Mets are punting C and 2b and are playing a lottery ticket at RF.

And while Damon isn't exactly perfect for the Mets, he does have the virtue of being a very good player. Between filling in for Beltran while injured, platooning with Francoeur at RF and spelling Murphy/Bay on occasion, there are plenty of ABs for him. If the Mets hadn't pissed away $3.5 mil on Matthews and Cora or if they had a modicum of creativity, he would be a really good option. Of course, Damon would actually make the team better, so there no chance the Mets will sign him.

That's better than "decent", even for a first baseman.
   22. Russlan will never be fond of Jason Bay Posted: February 10, 2010 at 04:28 PM (#3457802)
I don't like this and I am not one apt to complain about minor league deals. But what is the point? He's horrible defensively and the Mets already have someone to play first base in AAA. I am not a fan of having a bench player who provides zero versatility.

On a related note, Gaby Hernandez also was DFAed for assignment last week. It's too late now but the Mets could have acquired most of the guys they traded to the Marlins in the offseason prior to 2006.

Then how bad do people really expect Murphy to be? He had a .740 OPS last year at 24 in his first MLB season. Even if you don't have any faith in him, I think some improvement is to be expected.

An 800 OPS would have been 23 out of 27 full-time 1B's last year (>450 PAs). It's quite a bit worse than decent.

You need to get at least an 850 OPS with average defense to be averagish at 1B.

That's not park adjusted and you can be in the bottom half of players at that position and still be averagish, if not average. I'd absolutely take a .290/.350/.450 line from Murphy this season with average or better defense. I just think it's going to be less than that.

He had a .740 OPS last year at 24 in his first MLB season. Even if you don't have any faith in him, I think some improvement is to be expected.

This actually makes a lot of sense but no optimism is allowed in Met threads!

I wouldn't worry too much about the minor league deals that are being written these last weeks before spring training. Perhaps we can consider them "stockpiling". As the spring evolves and trades opportunities arise for LOOGYs, ROOGYs, role players, and perhaps a 2B or catcher, Jacobs and such contracts can, and will, be moved.

Jacobs doesn't make sense for the Mets, but you're right. You need someone in case of emergency. Jacobs isn't the worst guy to put there for a week or two at a time...
   29. PreservedFish Posted: February 10, 2010 at 05:09 PM (#3457841)
I still love Jacobs' swing. He was fun to watch that year he hit a million homeruns as a callup.
   30. Drew (Primakov, Gungho Iguanas) Posted: February 10, 2010 at 05:10 PM (#3457842)
As emergency minor-league fodder goes, they could do worse. It's not as though they had anyone ready to call up from AAA. As long as he doesn't get performance bonuses for time spent on the MLB roster...
   31. Russlan will never be fond of Jason Bay Posted: February 10, 2010 at 05:22 PM (#3457860)
I know that the Wagner trade was more about saving 3 million bucks but isn't being "emergency minor league fodder" the point of Chris Carter's existence?
   32. Raskolnikov Posted: February 10, 2010 at 05:23 PM (#3457863)
I'm fine with this signing. He can hit and he'd provide depth if the bench gets depleted.

I hope Murphy can prove to be a decent bat, then maybe serve as trade bait when Davis is ready.

- Good point, Russlan. Actually, with Carter, Jacobs is kind of worthless.
   33. Drew (Primakov, Gungho Iguanas) Posted: February 10, 2010 at 05:46 PM (#3457898)

Lassus, I'm from White Plains, lived in Utica for 5 years and enjoy cross-country skiing. In Montgomery County MD, the gov't a) isn't prepared for 50" of snow in 4 days and b) are incompetent at anything that isn't handing out real estate development or social services contracts to buddies. I've already walked around the neighborhood gazing at unplowed streets enough. Rant over.

Meanwhile here in the southern tier of western NY, we only got about 5 inches in the last storm and have barely had more than 6 inches on the ground at any point this winter. It's crazy. I bought a snowblower for this winter and haven't really had to use it. In fact, I'd wager that it was me buying the snowblower which has thrown the entire weather system off. Butterfly flaps his wings in China and all that jazz.

When I was a kid my family once tried to drive to South Carolina for vacation in March but got "snowed in" in Washington. It looked like about 3 or 4 inches of snow, but apparently there were no snow plows to do the highways or something? So we spent a few days in Washington which seemed to be a ghost town.

For a Canadian kid it was a very confusing experience.

Banta, a fairly sharp technical guy at work mentioned to me last week that the Jet Stream has shifted from it's usual place, perhaps due to Coach Ryan's bold predictions. Maybe we're getting Jamestown's snow.

That would be truly epic, since the 1962 Mets were 0-9, 1-12, 3-16, 12-36. Do you really want to root for the 1988 Orioles, OFF? 'Cause that's pretty much what it would take for the worst start in Mets' history . . . .

12-36 doesn't really count as a bad start for the '62 Mets, since that ended up exactly reflecting their winning percentage for the whole season.

According to BB-REF play index, there were 6 players who played 50% of games at 1B, minimum 100 games, who played in the majors at age 24 in their first season and at age 25 in their second season. 3 improved their OPS 11%+ and 3 declined 4-6%.

OPS at Age      24   25
Frank Torre   0.600 0.732 22%
Mark Grace    0.774 0.862 11%
Wally Joyner  0.805 0.894 11%
Lu Blue       0.843 0.807 -4%
Buddy Hassett 0.755 0.721 -5%
Adam LaRoche  0.821 0.775 -6%

Add Henry Blanco and his lifetime .292 OBP and GMJr and that punchy 80 OPS+ over the last two seasons and you've got the chance for something really special.

That's pretty bad, for a first baseman. I think Murphy's smart enough to get himself into 825 territory, and the glove already looks to be a bit above average, so I don't expect 1B to be a gaping wound.

A 900k guarantee to Jacobs with all the 1bman floating around the 40 man and AAA is nuts. I'm sure the Mets looked at his 30+ HR season and think they're getting a bargain.
