ESPN: Stark - Teams, start your engines ...

Jayson Stark’s look ahead to the Winter Meetings…

[Milton] Bradley was the runaway winner of our Most Likely to Get Traded at the Winter Meetings poll. And why is that? Because Milton Bradley can hit, gang. It’s that basic. He has a higher career on-base percentage (.371) than Grady Sizemore or Johnny Damon. And he has a higher career OPS (.821) than Torii Hunter or Ichiro. You can look it up.

So for a team like Tampa Bay, always hunting for big upside for manageable dollars, Bradley just might be worth a spin of the roulette wheel.

The Rangers could still get in on this, but Tampa Bay seems more likely. That’s because the baseball pieces appear to fit in place a lot easier for this man to wind up with the Rays, in that much-rumored three-way deal that would send Pat Burrell to the Mets and Luis Castillo to the Cubs. (The Mets, incidentally, then would be likely to turn around and sign Orlando Hudson to replace Castillo.)

What these teams haven’t been able to match up is the money pieces. Bradley has two years and about $22 million left on his I.O.U. sheet. Castillo has two years and $12 million coming. And Burrell has one more year, at $9 million.

So these teams, from all indications, continue to look for palatable ways for the Cubs and Mets to help even out the money. And while not much appears to have changed lately, Cubs officials have told other clubs they’re “confident” Bradley will be an ex-Cubbie by the time they hit the on-ramp to I-65 on Thursday.

This might be the most obnoxious paragraph I've ever read.

MLB.com: Hendry hoping to find right match
It appears as many as three teams are interested in Milton Bradley, and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry will spend next week at the Winter Meetings in Indianapolis trying to find the right match... The tweaks are minor for 2010, and include finding a center fielder, a veteran right-handed reliever, and a right-handed bench player who could play the outfield.

Bradley would seem to be difficult to move, partly because he is owed $21 million over the next two years and because of his lack of production on the field. But other teams have players and contracts that, for whatever reason, they want to move as well.
...
As for center field, it would seem Reed Johnson would be a perfect fit for the Cubs. The team did not want to offer him arbitration because of budget limitations. But that doesn't mean Johnson can't come back. If he can't find a better deal as a free agent, expect the two sides to resume talks.
...
As much as some fans would like to have Mark DeRosa back, he also is out of the team's price range.

Bradley for Gary Matthews, Jr. !
:P

NTNgod, I'd have to think the Angels make that trade in a heartbeat, especially if no money is changing hands aside from the contracts. Bradley would be a fine DH with Vlad gone.

So, has there been any explanation of the NTN reappearance? Sorry if I missed it.

Go Red Sox--get Milton Bradely--just to kick up the interestingness of the team!

I disappear for awhile on a whim, then reappear. Always have. No real single reason attached.

Perhaps I just get burned out on here for awhile. /shrug

Where would the Mets put Burrell? If he's the big OF acquisition, it's a brutally bad move. Are they going to stick him at 1b because he played 58 games there in 2000? Hudson will cost around what Castillo cost the Mets two years ago. This is why you jettison Castillo, who's still useful?

Burrell was a pretty good 1B in 2000, they moved him away because they acquired noted defense-first first baseman Travis Lee. And then they had Jim Thome. And then Ryan Howard.

Cubs toss in $4 M and it's done. Bradley then costs Tampa as much per year as Burrell, the Cubs save $6 M (over 2 years) and the Mets save $3 M. Not that I'm thrilled about this trade for the Cubs but I'm resigned to Bradley being traded. Castillo could be OK, gives us a leadoff hitter (until he collapses), moves Baker into the DeRosa role, Blanco as the other backup MI. This means we'll be dumping Fontenot somewhere, maybe just non-tender him. Hoffpauir keeps his job with Fox gone and I have no problem with Johnson as the other bench OF. I'm confused by this search for a CF. Why would we want to move Fukudome back to RF? He seemed perfectly cromulent there. I wonder if they're looking at Coco Crisp (should be in their price range, possible platoon with Johnson). Byrd should be in their price range too, Cameron is probably more expensive than they want to go but wouldn't be much of a stretch.

And that should about do it for the Cubs offseason.

...well 'Fukudome being cromulent' needs to count for something too.

MB will be a good pickup, cause Stark is right. The guy can hit. I'd like to see him back with the Rangers...
