When I was young, he was one of the executives of the old Oklahoma City 89ers, now the Redhawks. He used to walk around the stadium and chat with the fans. He spent far more time and had far more patience with an obnoxious little brat like me than I would have. I haven't forgotten that. RIP.

I'm only 33. But I don't have too many memories of my childhood. Those I do generally involve stuff going on in my house with the TV tuned to WPIX (Channel 11 in North Jersey) and the voices of Phil Rizzuto and Bobby Murcer in the background. They're both gone now. RIP.

Heh, heh. Andere needs to get it up right now.

Bobby Murcer was my first favorite player as a little boy. I cried when they traded him for Bobby Bonds.

RIP.

If Bobby wasn't quite HOF-caliber, his stats were hurt by playing in a low-offense era. He had the 7th-highest Win Shares total of anybody during the 1970s.

Just saw it on MLB live. Sad.

RIP, Bobby.

I missed his glory days (and wouldn't have seen many Yankee games out on the west coast). I mostly remember his failed bunt in the '81 world series that Ron Cey dove for, caught, and then doubled off a runner for the DP. Surely he was ordered to bunt?

Looking back at his numbers, he really had it when younger, cf. '71 and '72.

I remember having one of those bifurcated Topps rookie cards with Bobby and Jerry Kenney.

Sad stuff. He got quite an ovation when he returned to do his first game at Yankee Stadium after the cancer surgery. A real shame.

Bob Lemon did indeed send Murcer up to bunt in the 1981 World Series

A great ballplayer
A great broadcaster
A great man
A great American
A great Yankee

We will also miss you Bobby but will always feel blessed by having you in our lives

RIP Bobby. I'm too young to have seen him play, but this one hurts as I loved him as an announcer and my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer just over a year ago. I hope he's at peace now and that his family can find comfort.

Repoz, that was a beautiful post.
He was the favorite of my Yankee fan pals growing up. Condolences to the Murcer family and his friends in baseball.

Speaking of death, Tony Snow died today.

damn, kevin, you'll do anything to disrespect a Yankees thread, hunh?
   16. kevin Posted: July 12, 2008 at 10:13 PM (#2854551)
RDF. I never liked Snow. I thought he was a neo-con tool and a betrayer of his journalistic ethic.

So I guess you're right. I never should have posted that in this thread.

Rest in peace, Bobby.

Murcer was my favorite Yankee growing up. The news that he was traded for Bobby Bonds rocked my world. At least he got to wear the pinstripes again before he retired.

RIP

Speaking of death, Tony Snow died today.

Also heart pioneer Michael Debakey, for the trifecta.

Yeah, and tonight Cartoon Network showed the cartoon where Superman was killed by Doomsday (but luckily, he got better). What is this stuff?

Murcer, Pepi HR Nats, 8-2

Repoz....what is that date? I think I was at that game.

I grew up in NY, and my uncle, a Yankee fan, used to take me to games once in a while. Murcer was favorite of mine too as a kid, even though I was Met fan. (We were allowed to root for both teams back then).
   23. salajander Posted: July 13, 2008 at 01:40 AM (#2854619)
Looks like that was April 15, 1969
   24. shoewizard Posted: July 13, 2008 at 03:10 AM (#2854639)
Thanks. I think I was, but can't be sure.

I'm a big Bobby fan on YES. Loved his accent. Sad to see him go.

Tony Snow died? awesome
   26. kevin Posted: July 13, 2008 at 10:55 AM (#2854744)
No word yet on whether he was hunting with Dick Cheney or not.
   27. IronChef Chris Wok Posted: July 13, 2008 at 11:15 AM (#2854750)
No word yet on whether he was flying with Cory Lidle or not.

It is very sad up here. I was only around for the tail-end of Mantle's career, so I believe the most popular baseball player in my town ever was Murcer. This is Yankee country and they all loved (in Rizzuto argot) "Mur-sih". I didn't, being a Met fan, but his affable personality in the booth and his tireless work with BAT made him one of my all-time favorite retired players.

Rest in peace, Bobby.
