Few fans attend Marlins’ victory over Braves

Take your average Marlins home crowd.  Then adjust it downwards for being in September, about two weeks after they have finally fallen out of contention.  Then adjust it downwards again for being on a Wednesday afternoon, two days after Labor Day, so you know nobody took the day off because they already had Monday off.  Then adjust it downwards again for featuring the obscure (though talented) starting pitching matchup of Chris Volstad vs. Jorge Campillo, and being against the 4th-place, rookie-laden Braves.

What do you get?

Hanley Ramirez homered and doubled to lead the Florida Marlins past the Atlanta Braves 5-3 Wednesday in front of an incredibly sparse crowd of just 600 fans.

Fewer than 600 people were in Dolphin Stadium’s bright orange and aqua seats for the first pitch, leaving most of them to reflect the afternoon sun. While the official attendance, based on tickets sold, was 11,211, the ballpark was so quiet that home-plate chatter could be heard.

That's nothing. Look at what the Rangers did!
Only 12,882 fans, the smallest crowd for a scheduled game in the 15-year history of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, saw the shutout. The Rangers drew 9,046 for a game with Chicago in 1995, but that was a makeup game.

Newspaper guys said it was closer to 2,500.

It's hard to believe that players wouldn't accept less money to play in a wonderful environment like this.

Watching the videos on mlb.com, you can hear the same individual guys cheering in each of the highlights.
And when Ramirez trots around the bases for his home run, the ground-level camera shows the front row of every section as he circles, and there is NO ONE in the seats.
They didn't even have enough people to sneak up and fill front rows.

I actually like going to games and being able to hear the players on the field.

I remember going to a White Sox game vs. Seattle when Griffey was still with the team. We bought upper deck seats for $10, moved down to the front row behind the Sox dugout and could hear the first base coach from our seats behind the 3rd base dugout.

This sounds all kinds of cool. I'd love to go to a game like this.

Well, it appears that one of those fans was none other than Mr. Don Cheadle.

Try any April or early May midweek game at Five County Stadium while school is still in session. If it's warm enough, Mudcat radio broadcaster Patrick Kinas will open his window, and you can hear him in the first row of the upper deck.

Me, too. I love sparsely attended games. It's one of the joys of A's fandom. As a kid, I loved midweek night games at the 'Stick when I could get to them.

The other night at Five County, in a game that was played under threatening skies, there were maybe 150 people in the stands. Tyler Colvin struck out on a pitch up and in and you could hear the F**K almost anywhere you were in the ballpark.

I went to a short season A ball game last weekend that drew 5500.

In Albany, NY.

As a kid, my favorite was going to late-season Phillies-Expos games at The Vet. I could run the place.

I wanted to find the attendance of Calder Race Course yesterday to make a comparison, but it was dark apparently.

In terms of "fans per seat" I bet a lot of Indians games at the Municipal Stadium still have this beat.
