Ex-Texas Ranger took swing at drugs to keep dream alive

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News puts away the torches and pitchforks and calls off the angry mob long enough to profile local high school star and Mitchell Report contestant Chad Allen.

In the fall of 2003, Chad Allen was back home in Dallas trying to hold on to a dream.

In the wake of a catastrophic knee injury, the promising outfielder had been released by four major league teams. He was desperate to remain a pro ballplayer, which is all he wanted to be through his career at Duncanville High School and Texas A&M.

In short, he was a prime candidate to delve into the world of steroids and performance-enhancing substances.

So, Mr. Allen said, he called former New York Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, whose name he obtained from former minor league teammate Chris Donnels, to order a shipment of the steroid Winstrol.

On Thursday, the bill came due.

I'm not exactly sure how "the bill came due". What can they do to Chad Allen?

What can they do to Chad Allen?

He can be consigned to oblivion.

No, wait ...

Let us weep now for ruined Chad Allen,
His spirit, they tell us, was willin'.
But sad as it seems,
With wrecked knee and dreams,
Only stayed in the game for a couple of million.

A poster with name arkitekton
Failed to make a connect'n
'Tween "willin'" and "million"
And "ruined Chad Allen"
Though we still hold him in our affect'n.

Doc Memory wrote a prescription
For rhyme, in a fit of conniption
He instructed the use
Of fit endings with juice
Not accepting that sometimes the especially gifted poet may, as he will, stretch the boundaries of syllabation and ending and in so doing enrich the language and his own meaning by playing against the customary manners of traditional diction.

'Tekton and Memory were tanglin'
Over the allowable level of manglin'
The language can take
When limericks are spake
But Chad Allen's not worth such wranglin'

NO, NO MORE LIMERICKS!

Chicken thought Allen just huff
Then Clarence shouted ENOUGH!
But Ark couldn't revoke
A last little poke
At the juicer who needled the stuff.
