Father has concerns about Joba Chamberlain’s move to pen

Harlan: The First Dangerous Vision?

Make no mistake Harlan Chamberlain, Joba’s father, is happy for his son. But he was rather quick to admit in a telephone interview earlier this afternoon that he has some health reservations about his 21-year-old son pitching out of the bullpen at this stage of his blossoming career.

..."Immediately, I thought down the road,” he said. “I kind of looked at long-term gratification and success, instead of immediate return, immediate success, and all those thoughts went through my mind – they’re going to take you out of your zone that you’re in and put you in something that basically is real new to you. It’s a whole different set of circumstances as to the recovery of your body, arm, what have you. I just finally came to the conclusion that his body can acclimate itself to the five-day rotation versus the seven-day that he had in college.”

...And Harlan also made his son promise to him that he would speak up the very second he feels any twinge of discomfort. “I stressed to him that he needs to be vocal about it from the very beginning and not to let it fester,” Harlan said, “and he assured me he will do that.”

The beauty of a slow news day.

More fatherly advice, courtesy Polonius:

This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

Harlan Chamberlain should have his children taken away from him.

actually, what i would love to see is Cashman come out and say.

"Hmm, I didn't think about that. Dad thinks we are taking him out of his zone. Don't want to upset dad. Nevermind!"

I'm sick of these overzealous parents ruining kids sports.

So a guy with the same first name as Colonel Sanders names his kid Joba. That's either unusual or completely appropriate.

Am I missing something? Dad just recently realized that professional baseball works with a five-man rotation?

But more to the point, what the hell is AM New York? "Speaking honestly, Harlan can't help but wonder ..."? "Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Torre have vowed..."?

If Jim Baumbach has a press pass, then I want one, too.

I think this is being taken a bit out of context.
Mr. Chamberlain's an interesting story, he's Winnebago, grew up on the rez, is half paralized from polio as a kid, rides around on a scooter, works as a prison guard.

It's up to Cash to dictate to Torre how he should be used, e.g., only starts innings, strict pitch count, used every other day, only warms up once in a game, etc.

Harlan: The First Dangerous Vision?

Joba Chamberlain will have retired by the time The Last Dangerous Visions comes out.

Joba Chamberlain's children will have retired by the time The Last Dangerous Visions comes out.

(I remember being assured at the first sf con I ever attended, which would've been back around 2/78, that its release was just around the corner ...)

I used to like Harlan Ellison when I was a kid, but the pettiness of his feud with Fantagraphics has really turned me off on him.

I had exactly the same recation, Vlad. Too bad.
