Florida Marlins deal for Ross Gload, Hayden Penn

The Marlins bench did not stay devoid of a left-handed bat for long.

Wednesday, the Marlins acquired left-handed hitting first baseman/corner outfielder Ross Gload from the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named. A career .287 hitter in parts of seven seasons, Gload in 2008 batted .273 with a .317 on-base percentage and .348 slugging in 122 games (388 at-bats) for the Royals.

In a separate move, the Marlins traded infielder Robert Andino for right-hander Hayden Penn. Like Andino, Penn is out of options. He might have a better chance of clearing waivers than Andino considering he was unspectacular at Triple-A Norfolk in 2008 (6-7, 4.79 ERA in 21 starts) and had a brutal spring (0-3, 10.06 ERA in 17 innings).

Royals are covering $1.5 million of Gload's salary. Still don't get why they'd cut Dallas McPherson to get Gload. I guess they wanted a lefty, but still.

well, gload is a better hitter.

mcpherson's approach is great for the highly inflated offensive environment of albequerque, but he won't make enough contact to be a valuable presence on the bench, regardless of his power or his plate discipline. his power might steal a game or two, but gload's ability to put the ball in play and spray linedrives all over the OF makes for a much more successful pinch hitter.

I'm not much convinced Ross Gload is a better hitter than me.

I'd love to see the Orioles claim Penn if the Marlins try to pass him through waivers.

Maybe I'm crazy, but is 273/317/348 the line for a guy who is "spraying line drives all over the OF"? Seems more like a guy who is patting wormburners and ducksnorts with some bloops mixed in for good measure.

he's not a starter, and he was miscast as such in KC. what made it worse is that he was 31 and mediocre; that team was going nowhere, and they had 4 prospects who could very easily have been better than gload last year, while having significantly more upside in years to come.

but, as a backup COFer/1Bman, where his main duty will be to pinch hit against RH pitching, there will not be anyone better. he's a pretty damn good hitter is all i'm trying to say.

He doesn't walk. He doesn't have any power. His pinch hitting numbers are as mediocre as his overall numbers. And I'm really glad he's not a Royal any more.

Dallas McPherson > Casey McGehee?

Who's the defensive sub at first base now? Is it just Jacobs and Butler?

Gload profiles as a traditional PH. He was badly miscast in KC as noted. There are teams he could help. Not sure the Marlins are one.

Dallas McPherson > Casey McGehee?

Yes. McGehee's totally worthless. At least McPherson has some pop.

Dallas signed with SF.
