Forbes: Armstrong: Shilling Schilling

Lent. I go...alone.

“I’d be paying someone to negotiate a salary I basically already knew I was going to get,” Schilling says between spits of chewing tobacco, a habit he indulges despite being diagnosed with precancerous lesions inside his lip. “It doesn’t make sense. I never had a desire to be at the top of the ladder, salarywise, anyway. I’m making more money than I ever thought I would.”

“A lot of players would like to say they have Curt Schilling’s record and financially are going to go out there on their own,” says Paul Cobbe, a major league agent. “But honestly, there are very few players with that kind of momentum in the business.”

Curt-mentum? Is that as good as Joe-mentum?

Between him and his wife, it's the Schilling Cancer Factory.

I didn't know Curt still chewed, or that he was diagnosed with "pre-cancerous lesions".

It's an example of how desperately hard it is to break that addiction; if anyone would be motivated and informed about the dangers of tobacco use, it's Schilling.
