Former congressman Tom Davis says ex-Yankee Roger Clemens was in denial during congressional hearing

The Daily News I-Team is still around? I thought Tony Isabella was involved and it just sorta dissolved.

Former congressman Tom Davis, who once led the House committee that helped destroy the baseball legacies of Mark McGwire and Roger Clemens, says he applauds McGwire’s return but thinks Clemens was in denial when he testified before Congress.

“Everybody was speeding, and these are just the guys that got the tickets,” says Davis of the congressional hearings on steroids in baseball in 2005 and 2008. “If Clemens had just gone and paid his ticket, nobody would have had a problem. The difference was Andy Pettitte… What killed Clemens was Pettitte was right there, contradicting him.”

Davis, who left Congress in 2008 and is a consultant for Deloitte, told the Daily News he welcomed news of McGwire’s appointment as hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, after four years of self-imposed exile from the sport.

“I think he’s entitled to another chance,” says Davis.

...Davis says it’s fair to say that the baseball steroid hearings - and the Mitchell Report, which they helped make happen - basically “outed” a slew of baseball stars as steroid users.

“My feeling is it was a lot more widespread than that,” Davis says. “If you say McGwire can’t come back, well, you could say that about a whole generation of ballplayers.”

According to wiki, Davis is a Christian Scientist, but his first wife was a medical doctor. I wonder if he converted after the divorce, if his conversion precipitated the divorce, or if it was just really, really awkward for those 30 years.

Also according to wiki, Davis is now a consultant for Deloitte. I've always wondered about the types of jobs that politicians take after they leave office. Not all of them can semi-retire to the speaking circuit or become a party official. Dan Quayle became a investment banker.

Easier just to follow the revolving door to the become a lobbyist.

This is the lobbying firm which pays my ex-Congressman, Vic Fazio, a half million dollars a year to chum it up with his old chums on the Hill.

FWIW, I strongly agree with Tom Davis's speeding analogy for steroids. It was illegal (in a way). It may or may not have been dangerous to the offenders. Almost everyone, regardless of the potential for harm, was speeding. And just a few got caught*, and thus it is wrong to condemn those who were caught as if their actions were uniquely opprobrius; or to hold up those who never were caught and treat them as virtuous. And very likely, there are still many players with newer model radar-detectors who continue to drive over the posted speed limit.

*I hold it against Clemens for acting like a douche, not a Touche or a Deloitte, since he was caught. However, there are far worse "crimes" in our world. And who knows how I would behave if I got caught doing something which harmed my reputation as a world class mensch.

If it's so clear that Clemens perjured himself, and so easy to prove, where is the indictment? It's been 20 months since the hearing and all we hear are crickets from the feds in between fishing expeditions.

Hey, Ray, sorry about the other day. I just wanted to grab your attention. Unfortunately, it seems the easiest way to do that is to be a dick.

No worries. Assuming I know what you're referring to. :-)

You don't remember? It was at the end of the Dykstra thread. I called you stuck in a USENET mindset.
