And you can't expect journalists to, y'know, like check that out or anything.
Anyway, Carmona has hit him with a pitch once this year. He may have brushed him back or pegged him at first I suppose. Didn't hit him last year.
At least since 1987, when Willie Wilson set the standard for a batter absolutely creaming the pitcher who'd thrown at him. After rounding first base, Wilson charged the mound-- unobserved by the pitcher. He hit Ken Schrom so hard that, to quote "Diner," he killed his whole family.
Didn't Al Cowens do that to Ed Farmer around 1980?
Strong talk from a guy who was in a hockey headlock, getting pounded.
I've been looking for that game for the longest time--assuming it was after an HBP. Cowens was with the Tigers then, right? Cowens and Farmer had a history. Years ago, I emailed Dave Smith of Retrosheet asking about late 70's Royals-Rangers game in which Jim Kern broke Frank Whites wrist and Al Cowens jaw. He emailed me back the box and let me know it was Farmer not Kern. Anyway, it was the 2nd MLB game I remember attending and quite odd to see 2 different ambulances come out from behind the RF wall at beautiful Arlington Stadium.
Who was the batter who inexplicably slammed into Dennis Eckersley while he was covering home plate, as retaliation for an incident many years beforehand? The guy explained the delay by saying that it was the first chance he'd had to get at him.
It's my impression this used to be commonplace. Drag a bunt down the first base line and cream the pitcher as he fields. If he doesn't field, you reach. It's certainly more effective to run into the guy while he's attempting to do his job than to yell and charge from 50 or 60 feet away, giving him a chance to get ready.
