FOX: Rosenthal - Marlins seem ready to unload pricey players

Rosenthal’s future columns: “Weather seems to be turning colder”, “Yankees and Red Sox preparing to spend money”, and “Elephants don’t make good housepets”.

In recent years, low-revenue teams like the Marlins generally have had a choice when trading their most expensive players: They could gain either financial relief or premium young talent. But not both…
Ideally, the Marlins would want a top pitching prospect from the Rangers or Red Sox for Beckett, another from the Mets or Orioles for Delgado and a third from the Cubs for Pierre. Such deals would hurt the Marlins in the present, but set them up for the future. Yet, as the Marlins attempt to package Lowell with Beckett, they could encounter the same problem that they did over the summer when they tried to couple Lowell with Burnett.

While I have never read this author, he seems to be stating the obvious. All or most of Florida's marquee players have either been mentioned in trades or signing with other squads as free agents.

What planet do you live on that does link to Ken Rosenthal?

It sounds nice.

While I have never read this author

How could you read Primer for more than two days without encountering a Ken Rosenthal column?

Go back to molesting Marge.

Personally, I don't mind KR.

Rosenthal > Gammons + Most Others

So is this the year Josh Willingham gets freed?

By the by, lemme float this: Lowell to Jays for Hinske.

Uh-oh. That's going to bring in Emeigh.

By the by, lemme float this: Lowell to Jays for Hinske.

How would that make any sense for the Jays?

Hinske is owed $4.3M in 2006 and $5.6M in 2007. And he'll be only be 28 next year.

Lowell's owed $9M in both 2006 and 2007. He will be 32 next year, in addition to some serious health concerns.

Both are bad contracts and project to be fairly mediocre at the plate for the remainder of their contracts. Lowell has an advantage with the glove, but is that really worth paying twice the salary for (especially when the Jays would still have Koskie)?
   9. Halofan Posted: November 19, 2005 at 10:34 PM (#1739023)
If Fox Sports was smart, they'd just have Ken write a column every day and it would inevitably be a destination. It would make more sense than having it arrive four days a week but never consistently the same days.

Manny to Anaheim
LAA Prospects to Florida
Delgado to Boston
   11. Toolsy McClutch Posted: November 19, 2005 at 10:44 PM (#1739029)
You assume Hinske is a sunk cost, $5mil for Lowell ain't bad especially if his bat recovers at all. Dump Koskie on Minn for anything.
   12. Darren Posted: November 19, 2005 at 10:49 PM (#1739034)
What does Boston want with Delgado at $16 mil/year, when they're trying to deal Manny who makes $18 mil a year?
   13. Joe C isn't Posted: November 19, 2005 at 10:52 PM (#1739035)
Based on his posts around here the past few weeks, Halofan desperately wants the ManRam.

I updated the original Palm Beach Post/Beckett thread.

Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Rangers caved and agreed to send John Danks to FLA; deal possible by Monday.

   17. Aspiring One-Armed Economist (6 - 4 - 3) Posted: November 19, 2005 at 10:58 PM (#1739040)
If Lowell's bat doesn't recover, how is he any better than Hinske offensively?

The Jays already have two mediocre, overpaid thirdbasemen and plenty of other more obvious/pressing weaknesses with limited payroll flexibility. They are one of the last teams that will be considering a trade for Lowell.

How is Hillenbrand overpaid?
   20. The Original Gary Posted: November 19, 2005 at 11:09 PM (#1739045)
More precisely, Manny has issue with Boston. If the Sox are going to trade Manny, I couldn't expect much more immediate impact than Delgado. Then they'd still have $2 mil to give Theo. (that last part was a joke)

There, all fixed up.

Their issue with Manny is him, not how much he makes.

Oh, I disagree.

The Original Gary, are you, ya know, "Gary" of "Jim, Sean, and Gary" fame? Why the name change?

On second thought, I guess saving a few million and being able to hide Delgado at first would be somewhat appealing to Boston. I still think they'd rather have the LAA prospects--like superhomerunboy Wood!

Seconded. For all the talk about Manny being Manny, he matched his career highs in games and HR's. The Sox are worried he will never hit .400/.600 again.
I wish I lived in Cleveland to witness his 1997-2000 seasons, especially '99 when he hit behind Lofton, Vizquel, and Alomar
   25. Darren Posted: November 19, 2005 at 11:33 PM (#1739066)
Well, smarty pants, why does he have the new name then? Huh? Not such a God now, are you? :)

Well, smarty pants, why does he have the new name then?

With other Garys entering the site, perhaps he felt the need to point out his original Gary-ness, and separate himself from all the Gary-Come-Latelys.

There, how's that?

Palm Beach Post:
Sources: Marlins close to fire sale

"They may take it all the way down, like we saw in '98," an American League source said, referring to the dismantling of the Marlins' 1997 championship team.

Marlins President David Samson would not comment Saturday. But sources said Florida's front office has been telling teams that, except for pitcher Dontrelle Willis and third baseman Miguel Cabrera, everyone is available because of orders to cut payroll from the club-record $65 million spent on last season's team.

One source said Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, who is frustrated over stalled talks for a new stadium, is prepared to go with a 2006 payroll as low as $40 million, which could be the lowest in the major leagues.

Next year, they go on to win the world series. Mark it down.

Also, I think every fan of every team is hoping that their GM jumps into the fray for these players. Everyone loves a good fire sale.

And who will buy tickets to the Marlins next year? Todd Jones fans?
   33. NTNgod Posted: November 20, 2005 at 03:12 AM (#1739299)
Todd Jones fans?

Todd Jones filed for free agency, and isn't expected back.

So that's four less people to go to Marlins games...
   34. Vaux, A.B.D. Posted: November 20, 2005 at 03:14 AM (#1739305)
Sudenly the free-agent class is a lot better, and it's actually good for baseball in the end, because it creates winter buzz in New York and Boston. I'm half-serious...
   35. Benji Posted: November 20, 2005 at 05:16 AM (#1739352)
Hey, Bud the Steroid-Killer. Baseball fans sure are glad you got your boy Loria back into the game! Now orchestrate him to buy the Twins and you can have your blessed contraction.

But many thousand more gays.

We're talking about the Marlins and their attendance here.

Throwing around numbers with more than one zero is WAAAAAAY too high.

Fifteen people would be a more realistic total.
   38. DCW3 * Posted: November 20, 2005 at 05:30 AM (#1739355)
Okay, think about it: let's say for the sake of argument that only 1% of all the homosexuals in Miami were so offended by Jones's comments that they'd never consider going to a Marlins game. That's still like ten million potential fans you've added by getting rid of him.
   39. DCW3 * Posted: November 20, 2005 at 05:35 AM (#1739356)
Yeah...that's gonna get me in trouble.

If I'm dong my math right, that suggests there are 1 billion homosexuals in Miami. Even if only half of them are men, that's 500 million.

If only it were. Because if it were, tomorrow there'd be 500 million and one; I'd be packing my bags and heading south. At least some of them have to be single, available, and perhaps just a little desperate, don't they? That's my target market: single, available, and just a little desperate.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers are on the verge of getting Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell from the Marlins for Hank Blalock and John Danks.

Maybe it was Boston's interest in Beckett that pushed the Rangers into including Danks. It'd be a lot to give up, especially if the Marlins aren't going to pick up any portion of Lowell's contract. Nov. 19 - 10:55 pm et

According to the Palm Beach Post, Florida's front office has been telling teams that, except for Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera, everyone on the Marlins is available. The team's payroll may drop from $65 million to $40 million.

It's like eight years ago, but without the championship. The Marlins are believed to be talking with the Orioles, Mets and Yankees about Delgado. Juan Pierre, Paul Lo Duca, Jose Castillo and Guillermo Mota could follow Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, not to mention the club's free agents, out of town. Nov. 20 - 12:52 am et
Source: Palm Beach Post

The Marlins and Mets have reportedly been discussing a Luis Castillo deal for the last two weeks.

The Mets tried to get Castillo when he was a free agent two years ago. The second baseman is owed $5 million in 2006 and there's a $5.75 million club option for 2007 with a $500,000 buyout. It's safe to assume the Marlins are asking for pitching in return. They might also want a middle infielder, either Anderson Hernandez or Jeff Keppinger. Nov. 20 - 12:47 am et

If acquired by the Marlins, Hank Blalock could be moved on to another team, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Blalock is owed $13.7 million over the next three years, and the Marlins would still prefer to put Miguel Cabrera at third base. Unlike the Dallas Morning News, the Post doesn't believe the Beckett deal has been agreed to yet, saying that the Rangers may move Adrian Gonzalez for a pitcher to send to the Marlins instead of John Danks. But it does appear that the trade will happen. Nov. 20 - 12:43 am et
