FOX: Rosenthal - Minaya under pressure in New York

Mets general manager Omar Minaya always takes a high-energy approach, but it would be understandable if he was even more motivated this off-season. The pressure on him is growing.

Minaya, signed through 2009, has been thwarted in his attempts to land a contract extension, according to major league sources.
...
[T]he Astros, Giants and Cardinals are interested in Tejada regardless of what happens with Cabrera. The Astros and Giants, however, have little young talent to offer the Orioles. Ditto for the Cardinals, who will need a third baseman if, as expected, they trade Scott Rolen.

The Brewers remain an obvious possibility for Rolen, a native of Evansville, Ind., who enjoys the Midwest and is good friends with Brewers right-hander Jeff Suppan.
...
Emboldened by his acquisition of Milledge, Nationals general manager Jim Bowden is trying to pull off a similar coup in trade talks involving closer Chad Cordero. Bowden repeatedly has asked Milwaukee for second baseman Rickie Weeks, figuring that the Brewers might relent due to their need for a closer. No chance.
...
The White Sox can forget it if they expect free-agent center fielder Aaron Rowand to eventually settle for a four-year contract; Rowand already has a five-year offer from an unspecified club, according to major league sources

If Robo sleeps at all this week, I’ll be disappointed…

This is why GMs like Minaya and Krivsky are bad for baseball...

Re: this headline: Umm, the man's contract isn't up for TWO MORE YEARS. It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't grant an extension coming off a World Series win, much less coming off one of the worst collapses in history. I would not read a single thing into Omar not getting his contract extended yet.

Normally I wouldn't, but Robo clearly suggests that he's sought and extension and has been rejected. Even if one isn't justified, In Omar's mind he thinks he's due one, and may now be trying to make shorter term decisions for the Mets as opposed to longer term ones. This would concern me if I were a Mets fan because even if the Mets have a lot of money they shouldn't be eschewing a five year plan in favor of a one or two year plan. I would argue that the Milledge trade is evidence that he's doing just that. Survivable? Sure, it's not like he has traded Reyes or something, but not something that would make me happy if I rooted for the Mets.

Nothing about rooting for the Mets has made me happy since about June.

I've completely lost all interest in the Mets offseason.

As a fan of the Expos, I remember just how well and thoroughly Minaya can burn a bridge. Ironically, had he held onto Sizemore for the Spos, Bowden wouldn't have needed Milledge (although I'da taken him at that discount anyways).

So, the Mets have officially passed into the Scott Layden era?

When does little Jeffy take over?

Bowden's finally learned how to make good trades. Now, he just needs to learn the difference between dumb GMs and smart ones.

Milwaukee - smart
NY - dumb

He always knew how to make good trades- he just had trouble avoiding bad trades and in constructing a functional "team"

To make a bad trade, he'd have to deal someone of value. Who could he lose that's worth keeping? Belliard or Lopez? Getting any sort of return on either or both would be good. Johnson or Young? Likewise. All Kasten has to say is get cheaper, younger and don't deal Zimmerman. And as for good trades, it remains to be seen how valuable any of his acquisitions will actually prove to be. That's not to say he didn't pull off a good deal with the Mets. But I think it's more down to Kasten giving him a clear direction rather than any newfound insight or ability within Bowden. I expect when Kasten feels the time is right to spend money, they'll get a proper GM in to do the job.

Melvin confirmed to me today that Nationals GM Jim Bowden has proposed a Cordero for Weeks swap, in the wake of the Brewers losing free agent closer Francisco Cordero to Cincinnati. But he reiterated that he won't trade one of his young infielders for a closer.

"We're not going to do that," said Melvin, who has built his team around the four young infielders.
