FOX Sports: Rosenthal: Confronting the Clemens Catch-22

That…and other general dreedle from Rosenthal.

Closer Eric Gagne touched 94 mph in his Rangers debut Friday night, throwing harder than he did in spring training or during his minor-league appearances.

A rival scout who saw Gagne in spring training notes that the right-hander looked more comfortable on the mound than he did in the spring, when he appeared to hold back coming off back and elbow surgeries

“I thought he would be more hittable,” Beltre says. “I heard he was throwing 89-90. It was nothing like that. He had life to his fastball.”

Thus, he would make little sense for a rebuilding team such as the Devil Rays unless he later could be flipped for prospects. Frankly, even for a high-payroll club, Lidge would be an expensive gamble.

Are the Devil Rays really a rebuilding team, or more of a building team? What are they rebuilding?

I know that Rosenthal was on deadline here, but seriously, if Clemens wants to judge the competition based on the first two weeks of the season, he can go right ahead. But he won't have the necessary information.

I mean, recent history has told me that the Yankees will not go into the next school year with this rotation.
