Fraley: Dice-K breaks all the rules and still wins

Randomness shocks Fraley. Writes column.

Before he is finished, Boston’s Daisuke Matsuzaka could destroy every long-held belief about pitching in the majors.

Go ahead and start hitters off with ball one. It doesn’t matter.

Walks? Four or five a game are no big deal.

Let the opponent fill the bases. All that does is make them more frustrated.

He was at his Matsuzakian best in Friday night’s opener of the American League Championship Series at Tropicana Field. That is to say he did everything that pitching coaches have said for 100 years is wrong and flirted with a no-hitter in the 2-0 victory.

...That does not fully explain Matsuzaka’s uncanny ability to wriggle out of jams.

No, Don Sutton broke all the rules and won.

Obviously, no one has a true talent (or whatever) of a .000 batting average against with the bases loaded.

There is a certain logic to DiceK's performance, though. The walks come not merely from shaky command - though his command is shaky - but also from his pitch selection, as he refuses to follow traditional patterns even in tight situations where other pitchers would throw 90% fastballs or 80% sliders in the dirt. Even when he's behind in the count or facing a one-out rally, he sticks to his guns and pitches like he's choosing randomly what to throw next. I don't think the choices are random (no way he'd randomly throw 90% sliders to Carlos Pena over a couple months, for instance), but the effect is the same - hitters have no idea what he's going to throw.

Matt,

I can't post on either the DeMause thread or the Palin thread--both political threads shut down?

What would happen if Pat Tabler faced Matsuzaka with the bases loaded?

I was in the middle of responding to Szym on the Palin thread, and it got eated. I bumped the DeMause thread, since we had a discussion going that had gotten lost, and it seemed a fair place to continue things, and apparently that was enough to get it eated too.

It's like the purge of aught-5. Or was it aught-6?

Szym is out of control, if you ask me.

I didn't think your comment was out of line at all, Matt. In fact, I thought it was a very thoughtful reply.

For someone who claims to be a libertarian, Szym is awfully controlling of what one is allowed to say.

Dan Szymborski:

Just wanted to let you guys know that I closed the two older political
threads to comments. It's one thing when we have an active politics
thread to help keep the baseball ones on point, but four at the same
time in hot topics is a little much.

How you doing JC? Maybe we should forget politics and go back to what this site is about: talking basketball.

Matt,

Thanks. Seems odd to me. Both of those threads were pretty civil IMO.

Szym manages the site and has private authority from the owners, so under his principles, he can do whatever he wants with it and our only rational response is to vote with our money or our feet. Limiting discussion in a private venue not technically anti-libertarian, at least under certain understandings of libertarianism.

I find it very odd that he suddenly decided, four seconds after posting to the thread, that the thread had to die. It reads like pique, not a rational decision. But it's his site, and I like the site a lot, so there we are.

Well, I for one had had it up to here (not very high) with those fercahkta threads. And I look forward to more thread closings in the future.

It's actually Furtado's site, but Szym is the chief mod.

It's more than pique. He's being a control-freak every time someone fires back at him.

Dan Szy breaks all the rules and still wins. :-)

rr, see the Hank Steinbrenner thread for a brief discussion of this. Dan refers us to the current political thread, but I have no idea which one that is.

Dan does shut down threads where he's being strongly disagreed with or where his personal sensibilities are offended. It's no longer a pattern, it's a habit.

That is not the ownership arrangement.

Liar.

Kevin's gone for 30 and Kevin's Innermost Thoughts is gone for good. If we're going to hijack half a dozen random threads now for Meta discussion, I've got a lot more bullets.

Come on. I think you're overreacting.

One of the best things about this site has always been the extremely light touch of the moderators. Please don't change that.

Ooh, man, I wanna see what Kevin said to get booted. And Kevin's Innermost Thoughts, for that matter. Where can I find the thread?
