George Brett says division title is within reach for Royals

I once went to Hackysacky’s Golden Oldies and they had a Mint- copy of Tyrone Schmidling’s “You’re Gone, I’m Left Behind” hanging from the 15-foot ceiling...that was also within reach.

Don’t fret too much, Royals fans, about Monday night’s offensive whiff. According to Hall of Famer George Brett, you still have reason to dream. In the AL Central, this team — offensive shortcomings and all — could contend for the division, he says.

“Why couldn’t they contend?” Brett said. “In our division, I think they can. No one is head-and-shoulders above anyone else.”

The Royals’ overall makeup has Brett believing it will at least be an interesting September.

“If you live in Kansas City right now,” he said, “and you’re not excited, then you’re not a baseball fan. “We see what can happen when everything comes together.”

Wait a minute... Is this George Brett, or Brian Sabean? Both are in denial.

Bad timing for this announcement, George. Very bad.

The PCL's North Division, maybe.

Jon Lester thanks you.

"Powerless figure associated with organization has overly optimistic take on team he's loved for years. Film at eleven!"

At least that story's not about Ron Santo this time.

The Royals are 2.5 games out of 1st place. The Giants 12.

No one is head-and-shoulders above anyone else.

His overall argument is pretty homer-centric, but this statement isn't so fanciful. As rfloh said, the Royals are only 2.5 games out right now, and I don't foresee anybody running away with the AL Central this year. I don't think he's basing the notion so much on the goodness of the Royals as he is the mediocrity of the rest of the division. So, in that light, it's not so fantastical.

But I don't think the Royals will win the division.

Forgive George, he's just in a giddy mood, what with the Spokane Chiefs having such a great season and now on the verge of reaching the Memorial Cup Final.

Skimming over the Royals' stats for the first time this year ... Tony Pena has a 12 OPS+??? Egads.

Also, what is a Ramon Ramirez, and where do I get one?

Its is sunny eyed optimism, but at only 2.5 games out, its forgivable. I just hope management doesn't REALLY think they are contending this year, and try to make a stupid deal like the attempted Milton Bradley for Leo Nunez deal last year (look how good Nunez is this year!) or not trade Grudzielanek because his veteran presence is needed to reach 83 wins.

That might be equivalent to saying his veteran presence is needed to win the division...which is I think 75% of the goal (YMMV).

A team as mediocre as the Royals, playing in a mediocre division, has a better chance of winning the title than you might think. BBPro has them at a 9% chance (the first chart, no projections figured in). Of course if Cleveland starts playing like Cleveland then they won't.

I think it's apparent now that Hafner is dee-you-enn, DUN. They still have enough to take the division, and probably will, but I don't see them extending out into the mid-nineties in wins.
