Globe: Blue Jays lose two shortstops

Ouch, bad luck game

The loss may prove even more costly for the Jays, 16-18, as the team lost both its shortstops through injury.

...

Eckstein said he injured his right hip flexor diving after a ball struck by Dioner Navarro, which ignited a three-run third inning for the Rays.

“When I went to plant that’s when I did it, I did my hip flexor,” Eckstein said. “Right now it’s day-to-day.”

...

In the sixth inning, McDonald went to his knees to spear a ground ball struck by Tampa’s Gabe Gross, but then crumpled to the turf in obvious pain, clutching at his right ankle, which he appeared to roll over on.

Sadly, shortstop is Frank Thomas's second position.

They should check underneath the sofa cushions. It's where stuff I lose always seems to turn up.

Suddenly, the decision to trade for Scutaro in the offseason looks a little bit better.

I expect MSI to come into this thread and blame JP for the poor lineup constuction that lead to this predictable situation.

Neifi Perez, "Sure I'd listen if J.P. called."

I'm not sure if his suspension is over, but I don't think the Jays' opponents will object to his playing.

Too bad, he and Matt Stairs would have made a great DP combo. The shocking thing is that Stairs actually came up as a 2B.

If Toronto had gone after Jeter instead of Eckstein, they wouldn't have had this problem.

How do suspensions work if you're not signed with a team? If he signs with the Jays right now, does he have to sit out until their 51st game (assuming 50-game suspension)?

The Phillies lost 2 catchers in one game back around 1970 -- Tim McCarver and Mike Ryan.
