Globe & Mail: Jays a perfect 10

The Blue Jays continued their simmering September blowing into the Windy City and blowing out the Chicago White Sox 8-2 last night to complete a sweep of a split doubleheader.

The Blue Jays began the day with a 3-1 decision over the stumbling White Sox, 80-64, and combined with last night’s convincing decision the Jays, 78-66, have won 10 in a row to maintain their slender hopes for an American League playoff spot.

It ranks as the third longest win string in franchise history behind a couple of 11-game runs, the last of which occurred late in the 1998 season.
...
With the Tampa Bay Rays holding on for a 5-4 win in Boston last night against the Jays now trail Boston by seven games in the wild card race with 18 left to play.

???? the jays are 7 games back in their wild card pursuit, as a cardinal fan I'm being told two things, that being out 3.5 is a guarantee of no success, and that pujols won't win the mvp because his team didn't compete.. yet I'm hearing comments like the Jays are in it? seriously?

The Jay's have 7 games against the team leading them for the WC spot while the Cards have 0. The Jays are also a better team that is playing better right now and people are still thinking about the craziness of last year and hoping for more of the same this year. In addition the Jays "contending" is a surprise while the Cards have been hanging around a bit off the WC pace for a while. That said, both teams are extremely unlikely to make the playoffs and the Cards are probably the much more likely of the two in spite of the less favorable remaining schedule.

It is not that being 7 games out is a good place to be... but if you are a team that just peeled off 10 wins in a row against play-off contending teams, it has to increase your optimism.

So WTF were they doing for the first five months of the season?

Just as a goofy thought, how close would the Jays be if they had signed Bonds? I'm thinking they are the one team that may have regrets about taking a pass.

Though they might've faced serious legal issues getting a guy under investigation across the border with any regularity...

Keep in mind if the Jays sign Bonds in time for spring training, Shannon Stewart (.240/.325/.303 for 200 PA) never signs, and is not replaced with Brad Wilkerson soon after (.216/.300/.322 for 232 PA).

If healthy, Bonds would probably have gotten most (say 325?) of those PAs by now. The rest could have been divided among stairs/mench.

Figure Bonds hits .260/.380/.440 over those 325 ABs...i'd expect that's a difference of about 3 wins over stewart and wilkerson. The Jays would be four games back. I think you could easily argue he'd hit better than that.

Well, in May, July and August they were a combined 49-33.

And I won't mention April and June if you won't.

Lind-Wells-Rios is a much better OF than Stewart-Rios-Wilkerson
