Globe and Mail: Blair: J.P. Ricciardi: It’s time

He was not Paul Godfrey’s first choice. Or his second, or third. As J.P. Ricciardi went about his business this spring, the general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays was asked one day whether he thought his job was in jeopardy after six years without a playoff berth.

“Nobody’s told me this year is bigger than any other year,” Ricciardi said. “I’ve never heard from anybody that my job’s on the line. I don’t know … maybe I’ll go into TV. Maybe I’ll do ESPN.”

Hi-Yo!....A rotting..ehh..vein-bursting Johnny corpse...uhh..zinger for you!

Ricciardi has gone from being one of the game’s bright young things — a disciple of Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane when Moneyball was all the rage — to somebody hammered by the same people who once sang his praises. In his first year with Toronto, Ricciardi admonished a reporter one day for using a copy of the staid old Sporting News Register as a reference source.

“You need this,” Ricciardi said, sliding a copy of Baseball Prospectus across his desk.

No more. That publication believes he has broken faith with the Moneyball principles, or at least hasn’t changed with them.

“Look, it’s not what kind of farm system you have or how many prospects you have, it’s what you do at the major-league level,” Ricciardi said.

I wish they hadn't cut off the quote. "And at the major league level we've won 78, 86, 67, 80, 87 and 83 games and I proudly stand behind that record."

Well, sure he can stand proudly behind that record. He's not very tall.

He's not very tall.

He's not very good.

you know, it is possible to:
-> know the sporting news register isn't the best reference source AND
-> not be a very good general manager.

I seem to recall that we held a vote and drummed him out of our sabermetric club when he signed Hillenbrand. Anyone else remember that?

"Romero was chosen sixth in the 2005 draft, considered one of the best first rounds ever — just check the cover of Sports Illustrated's Baseball Preview — and Ricciardi admits he overruled some of his people when he chose Romero, the best college left-hander available then, ahead of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who is the next Derek Jeter in some minds."

"Admits". Might be the first time he's done that in a long while. Would have loved to see an accompanying quote with this, or was it just an acknowledging head nod?

Is Keith Law one of his people that he "overruled?"

FWIW ... I've seen film of Romero in the FSL in 2005 (in early 2007) and don't think it was a bad choice--even w/Tulowitzki still available. The kid has terrific stuff and impressive command. I thought "Cole Hamels-lite" when I saw it.

I just hope he's fully recovered from last year's injuries--it'd be a shame to lose that arm. I still want him to be a starter though. Getting back to 2005, he had a BB/9 of 2.5 and a SO/9 of 9.8--not bad for a kid of 22.

Best Regards

John

Vlad, signing Hillenbrand to anything disqualifies you from membership from any club, not just a sabrmetric one.

Nevertheless, I think you nailed it. The Hillenbrand signing was like the scarlet letter for J.P.

It finally hit me.

Brattain has been watching old Bugs Bunny shorts on Youtube.

Nope ... I've got Teletoon Retro and yes, I watch Bugs and friends although I'm partial to Chuck Jones and Robert McKimson's episodes. The newer ones aren't as demented as my tastes demand.

Best Regards

Fire JP! Fire JP! It certainly is time.

The Jays are set up OK for this year, though losing Rolen for a month out of the gate hurts. As close as they are to being relevant for the first time in a while, it really seems foolish to me that they're running a Stewart/Stairs combo out in LF when Bonds is available for nothing but money. They're that close with their front 4, defense and average offense, Bonds could make things interesting. They've got Rios and Wells to cover 2/3 of the OF, so Bonds wouldn't hurt them in LF as badly as he'd mess up another team.

Of all the things you can hang JP for, I think most of them are far enough in the past that penalizing him for them doesn't really help the team. He's finally got the pitching pretty well set, the defense is great, and the offense could be good enough to make them competitive if everyone rebounds. Snider will be an impact player in 2 years, but by then he'll have to replace Thomas. The problem is they ran through their down cycle without coming away from it with a good deal of cheap talent...

If he signed Bonds it would get him at least a partial reprieve from the sabermetric set.

Of course, it would also doom him to months of articles about 'chemistry' from the MSM, too

Hillenbrand for Accardo = steal except that it was Sabean = okay deal

he's in a division with the Yankees and Red Sox, both of which have pretty damned good front offices and a lot more money to spend. what shocks me is that people don't realize that the Blue Jays have been a pretty decent team given that 1/4th of their season is spent playing 2 teams that win 90+ games a year every year.

Sure, but the Blue Jays have also had the fortune of playing 1/4 of their games against the Rays and O's. That's got to do some canceling out of the heavy dose of Yankees-Red Sox.
