GM: Josh Johnson will be back in 2010

As speculation continues, seemingly on a daily basis, as to where Johnson will be next year, Marlins general manager Michael Hill added some clarity during a radio interview.

Appearing as a guest on Marlins flagship station 790 The Ticket’s “Hot Stove Show” on Saturday, Hill was asked if Johnson would be with the team next season.

“Yes, I can say with certainty, yes,” Hill said.

...Matt Sosnick, the pitcher’s agent, said recently both sides couldn’t agree on the years or dollars. Johnson was seeking a four-year deal, with the Marlins offering three years with a club option.

“It’s unfortunate that it did get out there, because that’s not how we operate,” Hill said. “But from the standpoint of Josh’s future, and how he fits, and how attractive he looks, no matter what his situation is, he’s a good player, and a good pitcher. I don’t ever think there would be a shortage of teams that would want to have him on their team, and we’re very fortunate to have him as a member of the Marlins.”

Mikhail, I understand you and Laredo Beinfest only get about $13 a year to spend on new players, but I humbly suggest that you take up a collection plate in Miami and sign Joshua.

I now expect him to be traded by the end of the week.

Leaning against salary arbitration

If Nick Johnson and Kiko Calero sign elsewhere in free agency, it doesn't look like the Marlins will receive draft pick compensation in return.

The Marlins are leaning against offering arbitration to both Type B free agents. Tuesday is the deadline to extend arbitration to qualifying free agents.

What offering arbitration would mean is if either of these players opt to sign with another club, the Marlins would receive a compensatory pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. The choice would be a compensatory one, between the first and second rounds.

Wow, they are cheap.

Wow, they are cheap.

Wow, you're right. They're B's, and not overpaid, they'll get contracts. Hell, Calero only made $500K last year, how much is he going to get? I can understand the fear with type A's, but this is a ridiculous level of risk aversion.

In free agency? Probably a couple million at most, and maybe 2/$5M.

In arbitration? If I were him, I'd be jumping up and down and screaming about the Damaso Marte contract (or some equally overpriced equivalent), which is what the Marlins were probably worried about happening.

I'm guessing this is more about the bonus money they'd have to pay the guys they draft than any real fear either guy accepts arbitration. Friggin' shameful either way. How can a good baseball guy like Beinfest stand working in those conditions?

I can see arb being dangerous for guys coming off high salaries (e.g. Abreu, Damon), but I don't see an arbitrator jumping Calero (who made $0.5M last year, and had a peak of $1.6M) up to $4M. Maybe he gets $2.5M.

Right, I think guys with low salaries get penalized more in arbitration, even if they are free agents.
