Goose Gossage: Manny Ramirez exit a plus for Red Sox

Ahh, yes...the Manny Ramirez exit.

“I’ve always thought that Manny was a dog,” Gossage said Friday. On Thursday, Boston sent the longtime Yankee killer to Los Angeles, receiving Pittsburgh left fielder Jason Bay in a three-team deal. “People say that Manny is a Hall of Famer, but I don’t know that he’s such a shoo-in. He lets in as many runs (with poor defense) as he contributes.”

...Never reluctant to speak about current events, he has said this season that Joba Chamberlain should remain in the bullpen, and that Chamberlain and Jose Reyes should stop their expressive celebrations on the field. These critiques have underscored a generational tension in baseball.

“The game has changed so much,” Gossage said. “It is a shell of what it used to be, though it’s still great.”

Among Gossage’s complaints: pitchers are “babied too much” by pitch counts, and even the game’s hot dogs are more selfish than ones of the 1970s. When reminded that former teammate Reggie Jackson once requested a trade away from the Yankees during a pennant race, Gossage said, “But Reggie played harder than Manny. He worked harder. He may not have been the best outfielder, but he was a professional once the game started. I don’t think there’s any comparison.”

goose: you're in the HOF. now please just go away.

So will the Grouchy Old Man™ procession be: Feller > Goose > Schilling?

Sorry Goose, but we've already got a Kruk.

Goose needs his own blog.

It stuns me that Goose is already this whiny at the age of 57. I can only imagine what he'll be like once he gets to Feller's age.

I just can't understand his incredible level of hatred for anything which happened after he retired.

Billy once removed Reggie from a national TV game in Fenway for loafing after a ball in RF.

It's so silly how he apparently thinks we care what he thinks about everything.

Apparently we do... or at least any and every bozo's opinion regarding Manny.

the thing that cracks me up about guys like this is they forget how they were when they played. gossage complains about guys stopping their expressive celebrations? i seem to recall more than a few times that he did exactly that.

But he did it with class and dignity.

Can the BBWAA rescind their votes?

This is like Abe Simpson yelling at the clouds. STFU already, Goose.

Ever read the Bronx Zoo? Half the book is Sparky whining about losing his job to Goose.

If they threw out every cranky-ass bastard in Cooperstown, it really would be a small HOF.

A shell of what it used to be? Really? Really?

If the Daily News called, I'd give them a quote.

Some of the stuff in the wake of the Babe Ruth deal. (To be clear I disagree with the sentiments being expressed. Young Ruth was a pain to deal with, but well worth it)

Harry Frazee issued a statement that included the following, "The Boston club could no longer put up with his eccentricities. While Ruth without question is the greatest hitter that the game has seen, he is likewise one of the most inconsiderate men that
ever wore a baseball uniform."

"Ruth's failure to respect the club's training rules, his unwillingness to submit to any form of discipline, and the bad example he set for the other men formed a combination that President Frazee could no longer endure,"
Paul Shannon of the Boston Post

The Boston Globe's James O'Leary wrote that the Red Sox had "made a good bargain" and an article in the Boston Evening Transcript declared "Red Sox players doubtless will be pleased with the disposal of the incorrigible slugger, and team play should be in more evidence."

In other words, when the Red Sox Front Office and is running dog lackeys in the media run a great player out of town, they are merely adhering to a long-standing practice.

This is as it should be. After all, one of the great things that Baseball sells itself with is the history and traditions that have accrued over the decades. Like Cub futility and Yankee arrogance.

"And get off my lawn!" Gossage added.

That is quite unpossible, Senor Goosey. In fact, it sounds quite STUPID.

But it is well within conventional wisdom among players. There are non-stop quotes throughout the history of the game along the lines of "well, he ain't too good with the stick, but he saves us a couple o' runs a game with the leather". Besides, I thought all the metrics (even focusing on games outside of Fenway to avoid the biasing effects of the Green Monster) showed Manny to be an extremely below average fielder, although obviously not as bad as stated by Gossage.

And while we're at it, Mr. Gossage would also like you to turn down that damn Rock and Roll music that all you damn hippies are listening to. He's trying to have a nap before he heads out for his earlybird special.

Judging by Gossage's performance announcing the Yankees lineup on FOX today, I would guess that he reads at a fourth-grade level. What a surprise.

Be careful there, sonny. The second part hits a little close to home.

I have the coolest IPod in the world. Much rock and roll. Hipster doofus type rock and roll.

Sorry. I was just hunting for angry old man stereotypes, and was calling upon my knowledge of Fark McCain threads. Given that people had already covered the get-off-my-lawn and old-man-yells-at-clouds possibilities, I went with what was left.

If it's any consolation, I enjoy my naps too.
