Graziano: Mets have very little fire … and the manager is to blame

Or as a totally phenorbitalized Abbie Hoffman almost said..."Free speech means the right to shout ‘theatrical’ in a crowded fire.”

A person familiar with the Mets’ thinking, who requested anonymity because he was relaying details of private conversations, said Mets management is planning a reevaluation at the end of this month.

The offseason acquisitions of Johan Santana, Ryan Church and Brian Schneider improved the roster, and if the team hasn’t found a way to assert itself in the division by June, the Wilpons will look seriously at whether a change is necessary in the manager’s office.

Now, this same person said that, unless the Mets fall completely out of the race, Randolph is likely to last through this season. GM Omar Minaya likely will stick up for him, and there’s no clear-cut candidate, inside the organization or out, waiting to take Randolph’s place midseason.

...Where Randolph comes up short is in his failure to recognize what kind of team he has and manage accordingly. Randolph is a decent man who cares deeply about his team and his job and believes strongly in himself. But he’s also stubborn, and that’s what has him in trouble.

FWIW, the Mets have the best RPI in the National League and their 17-15 record is not bad when the Mets have played 22 of their 32 games against Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, Milwaukee, Arizona, and Los Angeles. Each of those teams are among the better teams in the NL and that does not even include the three games against the Marlins who have played above their heads so far this season. The Mets should thrive as their schedule begins to get easier.

They have basically gotten nothing from Alou, Pedro, and Duque, and Beltran hasn't been himself lately. If you think Willie needs to be fired, I don't think it is for this season.

I didn't read the column, but I did use my browser's Find in This Page function to search for "Scrap Iron" and "Phil Garner."

It's also true that the Mets have had an inordinate number of off days and rain outs and therefore have only needed to throw their 4th/5th starters a total of 10 times. They've been lucky in that regard.

Either way, there is no more tedious team in baseball right now than the Mets. I mean in every aspect - the players, the absurd press coverage, the fan overreaction to a 17-15, the manager, the collapse, the overoptomistic fanboys who were predicting 97 wins. It's all so overplayed. Why can't people accept that they are solid team that is nowhere near good enough to run away with anything and nowehere near as bad as last September? Flip a coin in the NL East.

I still think the Mets are going to win the NL East by 5+ games. Nothing I have seen in the first month has changed my mind.

The Mets have skipped their fifth starter once. I don't think that's more than most other teams. They are also batting only .179 with RISP and 2 outs.

What nonsense. The 2008 New York Mets are simply the most overrated baseball team since, well, the 2007 New York Mets.

File this under "Most expected thing ever". Met fans crack me up.

Look, everyone knows that these guys are going to miss some time every year. They also will likely contribute something as the season progresses. I didn't expect them to play the entire year. I do expect them to help the eventually.

They aren't Mike Hampton, afterall. Anyway, bookmark the thread and call me an idiot if it doesn't happen. I'll be more than willing to own up to this.

And this is coming from a Met fan who did not feel the Mets were overwhelming favorites last year.

I'd say there is less than a 40% chance of any team winning the NL East by 5+ games. I'd put the Mets chances at around 15%.

I think this is about right. Randolph deserves at least to July to show us where the Mets are - if the Mets are not close to 1st at that point, it may be time to move on.

I wasn't so sure about this until Gotham Central and Healey argued for keeping Randolph. They are like Steve Phillips to me - figure which way their wind blows and head in the opposite direction.

I'm thinking that Graziano's anonymous unnamed source may have been an email from baudib or Dial.
