Guillen plans to take Uribe’s temp

Don’t forget the Liquid Silk!

Manager Ozzie Guillen has other options now that Alexei Ramirez, who homered Friday, has shown remarkable improvement since Uribe went on the 15-day disabled list May 16 because of a right hamstring strain.

“I think I figured out Uribe a little too late,” Guillen said. “You have to get the best out of him when he’s hot. When Uribe is hot, he can carry any ballclub in baseball. When Uribe is cold, he’s frozen.

“I’m going to take the opportunity when he’s playing well to play him. If he’s cold a little bit, give ‘the Missile’ (Ramirez) some at-bats or [ Pablo] Ozuna and take advantage of him.”

Uribe is batting .198 in 38 games, but Guillen values his defense. Uribe also has averaged 20 home runs and 71 RBIs the last four seasons, but Ramirez adds more speed.

“The Missile played pretty good,” Guillen said. “We need Uribe to play second base. I’m not going to say we’re a better ballclub, but we’re a better defensive club when Uribe is at second.”

Ramirez hit .306/.321/.469 in Uribe's absence, yet he still looks lost in half his plate appearances (8 K and 1BB in 49 ABs). He takes the wildest, most out of control cuts you'll ever see in a major league game. And you'd be foolish to think that he could be able to replicate that production for the rest of the season given his approach at the plate.

Well Ramirez swings at 40.7% of balls, only Vladdy and Soriano have been successful with that type of approach...Francouer's .251 .303 .405 doesn't cut it for me...

If Alexei is the "the Missile" will Nick Swisher become "the Silo" if he doesn't start to hit?

We need Uribe to play second base in Charlotte.

Fixed that for you, Ozzie

Interesting, and not all that surprising, Ozzie's sloooow reversal of his previous no-room-for-negotiation "Uribe's our second baseman" statement. Now it's "when he's playing well I'll play him."

If Swisher continues not to hit, he should be called "The Air Ball."
