Hagen: Phillies prospect arrested in Louisiana

A Few Small Repairs…

Brody Colvin, the Phillies’ seventh-round draft choice who received a reported $900,000 signing bonus to pass up a scholarship offer from Louisiana State, was arrested early yesterday morning in his hometown of Lafayette, La.

According to a Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman, he was released after being charged with misdemeanor counts of disturbing the peace, simple battery and resisting an officer.

The incident took place on Jefferson Street, an area known for its many bars and as a gathering place for college students to drink. The spokesman added that the complete arrest report would not be available for 5 to 10 business days.

Colvin, a pitcher, is 19. The legal drinking age in Louisiana is 21.

Neither Phillies assistant general manager for player development and scouting Chuck LaMar nor scouting director Marti Wolever returned phone calls last night. Attempts to reach Colvin were unsuccessful.

Considered a first-round talent coming out of St. Thomas More High School, the righthander dropped to the seventh round because it was widely expected that he would attend college.

Does Louisiana still have that law whereby a person over 18 can be in a bar and it is his/her responsibility not to purchase alcohol, i.e. that the bar doesn't have to check whether a person is 21, just 18?

My brother went to Tulane and told me this was the law to avoid the loss of Federal highway funds. I remember when I was 18 I had no trouble getting into bars. It was a long time ago, though.

Any relation to Tyler Colvin? Shawn Colvin? :-)

I was thinking Rosevelt Colvin.

Hey, it's Acadiana. If you are male and haven't gotten into trouble for drinking by the time you're considerably younger than 19, you will probably suffer banishment. He was long overdue.

Sounds like it was a smart move on his part taking the signing bonus.

You think this will have some effect on his chances to make the big leagues?

Authorities believe alcohol was involved.

Not anymore. Congress re-wrote the law to end that loophole in the mid-1990s.

Now, does any Louisiana law enforcement agency enforce this law? Not really.

Another nail in federalism's coffin. Too bad.

The legal drinking age in Louisiana is 21.

...As opposed to the rest of the United States?
