Hay McCoy: Did the real Homer Bailey finally stand up?

—Bailey had two on with one out in the eighth and Ramirez at the plate, 108 pitches already expended. Baker came to the mound, but Bailey talked his way into staying and he retired Ramirez on a line drive and coaxed a pop up from Blake on his 115th and final pitch.

“I told Dusty I started it and I want to finish it,” said Bailey.

Baker said he didn’t care what Bailey said, he was out there to look in his eyes, “And I wasn’t sure what I was going to do until I looked into his eyes. I wanted to see the look on his face and the look in his eyes and I saw what I wanted to see.

“If I didn’t see what I liked, I would have gone to the bullpen,” said Baker. “He looked me in the eye and said, ‘Hey, man, I’ve been throwing the ball good against Manny all night and I’d like to get him.’ Hey, he was still throwing 97 miles an hour.”

Bailey was gratified and said, “I can’t say enough about him letting me stay in. It’s a growing process young pitchers have to go through.”

Hat tip to Diamond Lueng.

Last three games for Bailey:

114, 115, 116

Too bad his arm is going to fall off.

I wanted to see the look on his face and the look in his eyes and I saw what I wanted to see.

Not at all relevant:

"You know what I wish people would stop saying?" he suddenly asks ... and once again his mind goes in a whole other direction. Bill [James] has just finished writing a true crime book -- a million thoughts on crimes from Elma Sands to the Kennedy assassination to JonBenet Ramsey -- and his mind has locked in on another seemingly ridiculous thing: People always talk about the eyes of serial killers. The eyes. You can see it in their eyes. There's horror in their eyes.

"That's just nonsense," Bill says. "Nonsense! Do people really believe there's something different about the eyes of murderers? Their eyes look like everyone else's eyes. And this is dangerous nonsense because it makes people believe that they can look in someone's eyes and determine guilt or innocence."

It's the way they are looking at you, like you're a prime cut sirloin steak just needing a few minutes on the grill for perfect rareness and a dash of BBQ sauce, that is the giveaway.

So is Bill James saying that Dusty is a serial killer? Or Bailey?

Anybody see the game? Was the line drive by Manny a shot or just a floating liner? I recall a tiring Mark Prior being left in a game against the Marlins to get one more batter. He got a line drive too.

BBQ sauce on a perfectly-grilled steak? You're a bigger monster than Aileen Wuornos.

Let me guess, in a Draveckian snap on pitch 117 of his next game?
