Heller: Senators’ Vernon deserves induction

L’amour for Mickey Vernon. I doubt even Heller with a gun gets him into the HOF.

Does he belong in Cooperstown? Well, Vernon is one of very few whose career spanned four decades (1939-1960), he won two American League batting titles (1946, 1953) while spraying 2,495 hits and his work around the bag was so exemplary it was said he could have played the position in a tuxedo.

As with any candidate for anything, there are negatives, too. For much of his career, Vernon performed for mediocre Washington teams that avoided both winning and commanding national attention. Plus, his .286 lifetime batting average and 172 home runs do not exactly sparkle by Cooperstown standards, particularly for a guy who played a power position.

“I think it’s even money,” baseball analyst and broadcaster Phil Wood said. “Mickey’s career stats compare very favorably to several Hall of Famers, but there’s always the fact that players seem to get punished for playing with bad teams.”

Maybe if he'd been able to play in '44 and '45, and hit closer to .350 than .265. He would have had close to 2,900 hits, and I think that would have been enough for the VC by now. He and Yaz have got to be the most inconsistent performers in ML history. I don't know of any other examples of players have a BA fluctuate by 50 - 90 points from year to year.

He's no better than Keith Hernandez or Will Clark. The HOM crowd will have a better feel, but Mickey Vernon seems more like Mark Grace than Hernandez or Clark. That's good and he deserves to be remembered, but that's not HOF worthy.

I'd say he was very good but certainly not hall worthy.

Four decades is not a big deal, I guess it sounds better than 21 years.

I agree that if he goes in then why not Grace or Hernandez?

Is it that playing on bad teams hurts players or playing on good teams helps? maybe both.

Vernon's career stat line is very similar to Steve Garvey's but with 100 fewer home runs. They both have career OPS+ of 116. Vernon had three more career RBI. Similar hitters with similar career lengths include Roberto Alomar, Carlton Fisk, Gary Carter, Lou Whitaker, Barry Larkin, and Ryne Sandberg – as well as Andres Galarraga, Luis Gonzalez, Don Baylor, and Joe Judge – IOW almost exactly at the watershed where good middle defenders are HOFers/HOMers and corner guys are truly not.

Yep, yep, yep. One of my faves, but he's a HOVG guy.
