Of course, but they were dire even by their abysmal standards today.

Anyone make it out to the new Red Bulls stadium for the opener against Santos?
Liverpool with Mascherano / Lucas are always going to be able to contain teams, but with no creative force in the team (as Gerrard as had his head stuck firmly up his own butt all season) they were never going to break down Man Utd with any regularity.
Well, the latest health care thread just got closed...
AG: Did you catch the Liverpool game yesterday? I didn't think they played too poorly, actually. You knew going in that Man-U was going to control possession. The good thing was that Liverpool seemed to do a real nice job of limiting Man-U's chances (haven't seen the stat sheet yet, but the only memorable non-goal opportunity that I can remember was Ji-Sung's header wide in the first-half). I thought the PK was a little harsh (and definitely thought Man-U got the better of the calls in general), but then again Mascherano may have been lucky to not have gotten red. They got beat by a superior squad, but it's now three games in a row where Liverpool looks like a good team. It's a shame that it took this long but hopefully it's not too much to ask that they keep this up the rest of the season. Their backs are pretty much touching the wall at this point, but their schedule is somewhat favorable.
I'm not AG, but I watched it. I think in the end Man U deserved to win it. Outside of the opening goal, Liverpool never really created much in the way of other chances, and let United dominate possession. That's a recipe for disaster, because United is too good up front to not make you pay for that. There's no doubt Valencia went down easily, but the solution to that is to not pull the guy down in the first place. Yes, it's a cheap foul, but it's still a foul, and that's the risk you take when you do it. Once the ref gave the foul, it really shoud have been a red. For contrast check out the penalty/red card Arsenal conceded saturday, which was 1/10th of the foul as the one on Valencia, and I don't think you can complain about it too much. Penalty aside btw, Valencia had a really good game, he was posing a lot of trouble down the side.
Overall I think Liverpool was just far too passive after their opener. They finished with 4 attempts at goal, 2 of which on target, and 40% possession. That's just not going to get it done.
EDIT: I also think Torres was a tad fortunate to get away with just the one yellow card, he was on the edge the whole game. Could have been booked for dissent at least twice, before he eventually got one for a really rash and stupid tackle in midfield. I love watching Torres, but damn, you need to smarter than that.
BTW, did Guardiola repeat the quasi 4-2-4 of the last week?
1st:
4th:
Relegated:
4th: Tottenham - No real reason for this, just a gut feeling. Villa had the driver's seat with some games in hand but gave away two points to Wolves at home. Can't do that at this stage of the season.
Relegated: Portsmouth, Hull, Burnley - No reason to try and reinvent the wheel. Pompey is cooked of course and Hull and Burnley are playing so poorly that it's hard to see them picking up two more wins in their last 8 or 9 games. That draw for Wolves was a big point and really looked like it might be 3 for quite awhile. 31/32 points might be enough to reach safety.
If Portsmouth are relegated but still manage to win the FA Cup will they still get the Europa League playoff spot for next year or is there a requirement of being in the top flight in your country to play in European competition?
There's no requirement of being in the top flight. Guingamp got to the Europa League last year while in Ligue Deux. They then lost to Hamburg 8-2 on aggregate.
There might be a requirement to not be in financial trouble and under punishment by your national FA, though.
1st: United, I looked at the remaining fixtures this morning, I just don't see United dropping enough points on their run-in to open the door for Chelsea or Arsenal.
4th: Aston Villa, they looked lousy last week, but they still have Bolton, Hull, Portsmouth and Sunderland on their run-in. I think they sneak in and take it.
Relegated: Portsmouth, Hull, Burnley. West Ham is no less dreadful than these teams, but I just can't pick them to go down, and while Wolves aren't anything great, they're pretty safe by default here.
A club needs a UEFA license in order to compete in European competition, and it is probable that UEFA would not grant such a license to a club that was still in administration.
This article touches on some of the relevant points, as well as noting that Pompey have yet to apply for the license, given all of the turmoil they've been through.
Has nothing to do with the punishment per se. They simply failed to apply for a european license.

4-3-3, Zlatan had an absolute nightmare; missed 3 or 4 absolute sitters and gifted the ball to Zaragoza for their first goal *facepalm*
4th: Spurs. Okay, deep down I guess they're going to #### it up at some point. But I think they have a real shot. I can easily see Spurs trip to Man City for the penultimate game of the season being the fixture that determines who gets to play with the big boys next season. Reckon it'll be one of those two.
Relegated: Consensus seems strong here. I think West Ham will be okay, but I can see Wolves getting sucked back into it. Still, the current bottom three look pretty crap.
Man Utd to win if Rooney stays healthy, Man City for 4th
1st - Man U. Think it's in their hands, don't think they'll drop it.
4th - Man City. If I'm not mistaken, Spurs still have Chelsea, Man U and Arsenal left. Liverpool's played two more than Man City.
Relegated:
Pretty clear.
It's Tottenham away, since when is that not something you'd expect Arsenal to win?
There is a particular risk for each of the clubs other than Liverpool, because the seeding for that set of playoffs is based on UEFA club coefficients, and none of the other three contenders have anything to brag about in that context (Villa are 71st, Man City and Tottenham aren't in the top 100).
4th: City. In the end, they have too much talent and games in hand. They have United at home and always play well against them. Tevez is playing out of his ugly gorde at the moment.
Relegated: Pompey, West Ham, Hull. Sorry Zola.
Unfortunately you can't easily copy and paste the results, but here goes:
1 Man U 88
2 Arsenal 85
3 Chelsea 83
4 City 73
5 Tottenham 71
6 Villa 71
7 Liverpool 66
8 Everton 59
9 Fullham 51
10 Birmingham 51
11 Blackburn 40
12 West Ham 39
13 Stoke 39
14 Bolton 37
15 Wolves 36
16 Wigan 36
17 Sunderland 35
18 Hull 33
19 Burnly 2
20 Portsmouth 15
I'm sure he fiddeled the results to get it that close, but still hilarious...
I have Man Utd winning it just barely over both Arsenal and Chelsea. Tottenham is 4th on goal difference over Villa, which I'm skeptical of and I should probably re-do my predictions but what the hell. Hull, Burnley and Portsmouth are doomed.
HEy, I'm not letting anybody steal any of my crefit here!
19 Burnly 2
Yes that's right btw. Burnly completely unexpectedly go into administration, and are docker 24 points by the FA. However, Portsmouth is so pathetic that despite finishing with 15 points they end up behind Burnly.
I think Man City are 4th, and the current bottom 3 will go down. Man Utd to win the title which is frankly amazing - Chelsea have by far the best team, and I think Ancelotti should be getting seriously slated over this.
Oops, sorry.
Har har. Woolwich haven't won at the Lane in a little while now and haven't had much joy there in general of late (see #727). I'm hopeful Spurs can take all three points from that game, although I think a lot will depend on whether or not Palcios is available. He single-handedly demolished Arsenal in the same fixture last season; it was one of the most incredible midfield performances I've ever seen.
Anyhow, I've still got Spurs taking fourth even if they only get a single point from that nasty Arsenal/Chelsea/ManU run next month...provided they take care of business against the teams in the bottom half and manage at least a draw at Man City.
Forgetting 5-4, aren't you?
Woolwich haven't won at the Lane in a little while now
Two seasons ago is a long time?
I'm hopeful Spurs can take all three points from that game, although I think a lot will depend on whether or not Palcios is available.
You'll be lucky with a draw, as you have been in every league game this decade. Tottenham live to get their faces rubbed in the mud by Arsenal - it's their raison d'etre.
"Little while" = long time?
You'll be lucky with a draw, as you have been in every league game this decade. Tottenham live to get their faces rubbed in the mud by Arsenal - it's their raison d'etre.
French? Typical.
For a while, being French was all you needed to get a job at Tottenham. Or are we forgetting Damien Comolli's appointment for knowing Wenger?
Anyway, I'd rather be French than be a Poplar market-trader. You're managed by Del-Boy. Have fun in the clink, Harry!
Belive me, we've been trying to forget him. Damien Comolli, the last in a long line of French management at Spurs that stretches back all the way to...Damien Comolli. Don't even think about throwing Santini out there; he was in charge for like ten minutes.
Anyway, I'd rather be French than be a Poplar market-trader. You're managed by Del-Boy. Have fun in the clink, Harry!
Really, there are plenty of other things to talk about if you must deflect attention away from Arsenal's moral shortcomings. There's no need to impugn Honest Harry while the wheels of justice are still in motion.
EDIT: Are you saying this is what's behind the Carroll/Taylor situation?
Fat Freddie's financial misapropriation was beyond belief.
At least it's gotten Joey Barton back in the team . . .
That puts Newcastle eight points clear at the top.
Five. Of course the important thing is the 10 point lead over third place, with a game in hand.
At least it didn't happen while they were on the pitch
We can thank Sam Allardyce for that particular masterstroke, supporters hated Barton as much as everyone else and still do.
But that was par for the course for the man who also gave us the talents of Cacapa and Geremi.
Allardyce was just obviously the wrong man for that team. I remember my immediate reaction when I heard about his appointment was: "Oh my god, this is going to be a complete trainwreck." They should never have driven out Sir Bobby, that was just sad...
Pretty much every non-idiot fan realised Allardyce was going to be a disaster, the manager most wanted at the time was Steve Bruce or Hughes.
Of course getting rid of SBR for not getting you into the champions league set that whole s**tfest into motion, that is undeniable. Hell, getting rid of Glenn Roeder wasn't even all that wise.
But the rot really started with Souness who destroys pretty much any club he touches.
Roeder was likable but clearly way over his head. The mistake wasn't getting rid of him but hiring the wholly unsuitable Allardyce.
I'm torn on Hughton. I think he will be severely over his head in the Premier League (win the next game and we go up) but also deserves to be given the chance to fail.
With his previous, I don't know how you can possibly describe Carroll as a "good honest lad" except in the most despicably football of ways (i.e. he's English, white, illiterate, and a thug on the pitch).
Who knew?
I haven't heard "radgie" before.
Not a good night for the Bhoys, FPH.
Well to be fair to Barton, he has admitted that he has behaved idiotically throughout his career. At least he appears to be getting some self-awareness, unlike most of the prats / thugs who are English soccer players.
Tottenham's gonna do it again!
You can't stop 'em,
Those boys from Tottenham,
The boys from White Hart Lane!
The boys from White Hart Lane!
And Man City has lost their game in hand. Not a bad day for Tottenham.
Though the neutral and media support for Pompey reaching a "Fairytale Final" is going to be strong.
He's also quit drinking, which is a pretty concrete step.
He did that after the cigar eye-stubbing incident also.
EDIT: But Joey is still the white sheep of his family; his brother, the racist axe murderer, has a somewhat worse record.
I admit to being a bit torn myself. The callous side of me is delighted Spurs are facing by far the weakest team left in the Cup. But at the end of the day, Spurs will have to beat one of two excellent teams to win the Cup even if they progress to the final. If I could wave the magic wand, I'd have Pompey beating Villa (since Spurs can't seem to manage it) and Spurs beating Chelsea to set up a real "Fairytale Final".
I was super impressed with Eidur Gudjohnsen. Bentley changed the game, but I think Eidur wuz robbed for Man of the Match honors. He worked hard and was the biggest goal threat during the frustrating first half, and then in the second showed great versatility and class playing up top and in the center of midfield. Once he dropped back, he was closing down energetically and helped Thud boss the midfield while setting up and rounding off a lovely passing move for his goal. Looks another very sage Harry Redknapp bargain find. If he keeps contributing performances like that, I hope he stays on past the end of the season; he really showed his pedigree tonight.
No. No it was not. I mean the title race was allready over, but that's just plain embarissing. On top of that Bayern reached the final of the DFB cup. Truly a black, black day -_-
It must be nice to have that as the comparison. You can be pretty #### before you drop below that.
Ask Dustin Pedroia how that is working out...
Rangers got knocked out of the cup by Dundee United, and I am managing to come to terms with Bayern's win by convincing myself that the last thing they needed as they embark a set of fixtures over the next two and a half weeks that would make strong men weep was 30 minutes of high-pressure extra time.
That is not cool, NYPD.
A merseyside equivalent would be scally or, in the US, redkneck would be a roughly equivalent perjorative. Not to be confused with gadgie which means 'bloke'.
Oh dear. That could be another "John Barnes" moment.
If it were Brooklyn, I'd just assume someone didn't get their payoff. There are plenty of other Irish pubs that show the games in the morning, though.
Yeah, I actually tried to watch the United-Arsenal match there a couple of weeks back and it was full. I went to a place a couple of blocks away, it was pretty good.
Nevada Smith's might be too popular for its own good. They attract big crowds and attention. We could find a place, if we were so inclined.
O am basing this entirely on championship manager, so it must be right. Basically, you aren't allowed to talk to anybody who is not under contract with your team until there are 6 months or less remaining on that players contract. There have been cases where teams have been caught tampering, but a lot of times the "courting" is done through the media, and any claoms of tampering in those instances will likely get woven away by the authorities.
I will no go and double check this (not that i don't trust CM of course).
per wikipedia
However, this is a FIFA rule, and as such is subject to legal challenge - to say that, in some circumstances, you should be able to talk earlier. Ashley Cole threatened to take this rule to court, and speaking to an employment lawyer expert friend of mine it seemed he might well have won. But since then the Lisbon Treaty has passed which muddies the waters further (sport gets certain exemptions from EU workers rights laws).
Long story short - if Henry's contract is up this summer, MLS have every right to offer him a pre-contract now.
2) Henry is on a four year contract that currently expires in June 2011. That said, given the emergence of Pedro and Bojan's recent improvement, I am pretty sure that Barca wouldn't be heart-broken to see him go for a decent fee.
3) Tweets from Empire Supporters Club say that Nevada Smith's has reopened, but NS has yet to confirm. There is a rumor that the police attention relates more to their nighttime business than to anything relating to football.
It's wierd, the only real source to this rumor I can find seems to be a Telgraph article. Which states Henry's contract expires summer 2011, and then in the next sentance states: Henry could join RB after the world cup or at the start of 2011 at the beginning of the next MLS season. It completely fails to mention HOW this could be possible.
Anyway, I'm not that familiar with MLS, I'm not sure if their cap system includes anything on transfer fees. Or whether RB would be willing to pay a "decent fee". But it certainly seems like a pretty large roadblock.
