Henry, Yankees Catch Break as Soccer, Baseball Ban Video Replay

The left hand of Thierry Henry and the left-field foul line at Yankee Stadium have something in common: No instant replay.

France reached soccer’s World Cup finals on an overtime goal against Ireland that was set up by what replays showed was a ball illegally directed by Henry’s left hand onto the path of teammate William Gallas.

A month earlier and 3,500 miles (5,600 kilometers) to the west, the New York Yankees won a first-round game in Major League Baseball’s playoffs with help from a final-inning call on a fly ball down the left-field line by Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins that was called foul.

Video replays led even the umpire who called it, Phil Cuzzi, to say that the ruling should have been fair. The Yankees won 4-3 in the bottom of the 11th on their way to claiming a record-extending 27th World Series title.

Each case brought cries for the use of video replay to help determine the correct call. Both sports’ leaders said, ‘No.’

“Until I am no longer president, there will be no chance” for replays, said Sepp Blatter, the head of soccer’s governing body FIFA, which said yesterday that the France-Ireland result stood.

#### the Yankees. #### France.

Have you only just noticed how awful Stoke are? They are dire.

Of course, but they were dire even by their abysmal standards today.

I'm actually kinda glad Arsenal won that game today. If they had ended up loosing the title because of that ridiculously soft red card & penalty, it would have been a travesty.

AG: Did you catch the Liverpool game yesterday? I didn't think they played too poorly, actually. You knew going in that Man-U was going to control possession. The good thing was that Liverpool seemed to do a real nice job of limiting Man-U's chances (haven't seen the stat sheet yet, but the only memorable non-goal opportunity that I can remember was Ji-Sung's header wide in the first-half). I thought the PK was a little harsh (and definitely thought Man-U got the better of the calls in general), but then again Mascherano may have been lucky to not have gotten red. They got beat by a superior squad, but it's now three games in a row where Liverpool looks like a good team. It's a shame that it took this long but hopefully it's not too much to ask that they keep this up the rest of the season. Their backs are pretty much touching the wall at this point, but their schedule is somewhat favorable.

Anyone make it out to the new Red Bulls stadium for the opener against Santos?

Leo Messi agains Zaragoza, absolutely incredible again. Another hat-trick!

Liverpool with Mascherano / Lucas are always going to be able to contain teams, but with no creative force in the team (as Gerrard as had his head stuck firmly up his own butt all season) they were never going to break down Man Utd with any regularity.

I'm not AG, but I watched it. I think in the end Man U deserved to win it. Outside of the opening goal, Liverpool never really created much in the way of other chances, and let United dominate possession. That's a recipe for disaster, because United is too good up front to not make you pay for that. There's no doubt Valencia went down easily, but the solution to that is to not pull the guy down in the first place. Yes, it's a cheap foul, but it's still a foul, and that's the risk you take when you do it. Once the ref gave the foul, it really shoud have been a red. For contrast check out the penalty/red card Arsenal conceded saturday, which was 1/10th of the foul as the one on Valencia, and I don't think you can complain about it too much. Penalty aside btw, Valencia had a really good game, he was posing a lot of trouble down the side.

Overall I think Liverpool was just far too passive after their opener. They finished with 4 attempts at goal, 2 of which on target, and 40% possession. That's just not going to get it done.

EDIT: I also think Torres was a tad fortunate to get away with just the one yellow card, he was on the edge the whole game. Could have been booked for dissent at least twice, before he eventually got one for a really rash and stupid tackle in midfield. I love watching Torres, but damn, you need to smarter than that.

A couple more weeks of this, and teams will just start hiring goons with metal bats to wait for Messi at the stadium entrance.

BTW, did Guardiola repeat the quasi 4-2-4 of the last week?

With just six weeks or so left to play, the top and bottom of Premier League table are about as tight as I can remember. What are your picks for the following?

1st:
4th:
Relegated:
   712. Jose Can You Seabiscuit Posted: March 22, 2010 at 02:13 PM (#3483683)
1st: Man Utd - Chelsea has let this thing slip through it's grasp and now are playing from behind (even with the game in hand).

4th: Tottenham - No real reason for this, just a gut feeling. Villa had the driver's seat with some games in hand but gave away two points to Wolves at home. Can't do that at this stage of the season.

Relegated: Portsmouth, Hull, Burnley - No reason to try and reinvent the wheel. Pompey is cooked of course and Hull and Burnley are playing so poorly that it's hard to see them picking up two more wins in their last 8 or 9 games. That draw for Wolves was a big point and really looked like it might be 3 for quite awhile. 31/32 points might be enough to reach safety.

If Portsmouth are relegated but still manage to win the FA Cup will they still get the Europa League playoff spot for next year or is there a requirement of being in the top flight in your country to play in European competition?

There's no requirement of being in the top flight. Guingamp got to the Europa League last year while in Ligue Deux. They then lost to Hamburg 8-2 on aggregate.

There might be a requirement to not be in financial trouble and under punishment by your national FA, though.

This is true, I believe I have read somewhere that Pompey isn't eligible to play in Europe next season. That seems kind of dumb to me, however, since if you want to get a team back on good financial standing, there's no reason to exclude them from a lucractive thing.

1st: United, I looked at the remaining fixtures this morning, I just don't see United dropping enough points on their run-in to open the door for Chelsea or Arsenal.

4th: Aston Villa, they looked lousy last week, but they still have Bolton, Hull, Portsmouth and Sunderland on their run-in. I think they sneak in and take it.

Relegated: Portsmouth, Hull, Burnley. West Ham is no less dreadful than these teams, but I just can't pick them to go down, and while Wolves aren't anything great, they're pretty safe by default here.
   715. ursus arctos Posted: March 22, 2010 at 02:43 PM (#3483699)
Yes, I think I touched on that a while ago.

A club needs a UEFA license in order to compete in European competition, and it is probable that UEFA would not grant such a license to a club that was still in administration.

This article touches on some of the relevant points, as well as noting that Pompey have yet to apply for the license, given all of the turmoil they've been through.

Has nothing to do with the punishment per se. They simply failed to apply for a european license.

FW Pedro

MF Keita
MF Yaya

DF Pique

4-3-3, Zlatan had an absolute nightmare; missed 3 or 4 absolute sitters and gifted the ball to Zaragoza for their first goal *facepalm*

If it's not possible Football Manager lied to me, I've won the FA Cup while in the Championship and gotten to play in the Europa League.
   719. Mattbert Posted: March 22, 2010 at 03:47 PM (#3483745)
1st: Arsenal. Okay, deep down I guess it's ManU's title to lose. But I think Arsenal has a real shot. Five of their remaining seven games you'd expect them to win. The other two are Tottenham away and Man City at home.

4th: Spurs. Okay, deep down I guess they're going to #### it up at some point. But I think they have a real shot. I can easily see Spurs trip to Man City for the penultimate game of the season being the fixture that determines who gets to play with the big boys next season. Reckon it'll be one of those two.

Relegated: Consensus seems strong here. I think West Ham will be okay, but I can see Wolves getting sucked back into it. Still, the current bottom three look pretty crap.
   720. Obi One Kenobi Nil (BFFB) Posted: March 22, 2010 at 05:02 PM (#3483795)
Barring Wolves suddenly all coming down with scrofula or something I think the current bottom three will remain the bottom three, both Hull and Burnley are utter trainwrecks right now and Portsmouth is, well, Portsmouth.

Man Utd to win if Rooney stays healthy, Man City for 4th
   721. Langer Monk Posted: March 22, 2010 at 05:02 PM (#3483796)
For my own amusement:

1st - Man U. Think it's in their hands, don't think they'll drop it.

4th - Man City. If I'm not mistaken, Spurs still have Chelsea, Man U and Arsenal left. Liverpool's played two more than Man City.

Relegated:

   724. ursus arctos Posted: March 22, 2010 at 05:25 PM (#3483816)
Given the significant flaws that all of the contenders for fourth place have repeatedly demonstrated over the course of the season, it can be no means be taken for granted that any of them will in fact win their Champions League Qualifying Round playoff tie.

There is a particular risk for each of the clubs other than Liverpool, because the seeding for that set of playoffs is based on UEFA club coefficients, and none of the other three contenders have anything to brag about in that context (Villa are 71st, Man City and Tottenham aren't in the top 100).
   725. Buddha Posted: March 22, 2010 at 05:35 PM (#3483819)
1st: Arsenal. United's run down the stretch is tougher and Rooney is beginning to wear down. He was limping after the game. If Fergie plans on playing him in Europe (and he does, of course), then he might have to sit him multiple times over the rest of the season. I can see a 0-0 or 1-1 draw on the horizon.

4th: City. In the end, they have too much talent and games in hand. They have United at home and always play well against them. Tevez is playing out of his ugly gorde at the moment.

Relegated: Pompey, West Ham, Hull. Sorry Zola.

3 Chelsea 83
4 City 73
5 Tottenham 71
6 Villa 71
7 Liverpool 66
8 Everton 59

Man U 83 (+52); Arsenal 83 (+52); Chelsea 83 (+52)
And Arsenal are champions on goals scored. Ridiculous.

I'm sure he fiddeled the results to get it that close, but still hilarious...

That's a great site, Flynn.

I have Man Utd winning it just barely over both Arsenal and Chelsea. Tottenham is 4th on goal difference over Villa, which I'm skeptical of and I should probably re-do my predictions but what the hell. Hull, Burnley and Portsmouth are doomed.

Yes that's right btw. Burnly completely unexpectedly go into administration, and are docker 24 points by the FA. However, Portsmouth is so pathetic that despite finishing with 15 points they end up behind Burnly.

I think Man City are 4th, and the current bottom 3 will go down. Man Utd to win the title which is frankly amazing - Chelsea have by far the best team, and I think Ancelotti should be getting seriously slated over this.

Har har. Woolwich haven't won at the Lane in a little while now and haven't had much joy there in general of late (see #727). I'm hopeful Spurs can take all three points from that game, although I think a lot will depend on whether or not Palcios is available. He single-handedly demolished Arsenal in the same fixture last season; it was one of the most incredible midfield performances I've ever seen.

Anyhow, I've still got Spurs taking fourth even if they only get a single point from that nasty Arsenal/Chelsea/ManU run next month...provided they take care of business against the teams in the bottom half and manage at least a draw at Man City.

Belive me, we've been trying to forget him. Damien Comolli, the last in a long line of French management at Spurs that stretches back all the way to...Damien Comolli. Don't even think about throwing Santini out there; he was in charge for like ten minutes.

Anyway, I'd rather be French than be a Poplar market-trader. You're managed by Del-Boy. Have fun in the clink, Harry!

Really, there are plenty of other things to talk about if you must deflect attention away from Arsenal's moral shortcomings. There's no need to impugn Honest Harry while the wheels of justice are still in motion.

We can thank Sam Allardyce for that particular masterstroke, supporters hated Barton as much as everyone else and still do.

But that was par for the course for the man who also gave us the talents of Cacapa and Geremi.
   755. Fancy Pants Handle is the AntAgonizer Posted: March 24, 2010 at 11:03 AM (#3484732)
I despise Allardyce as much as anyone, but to be fair, anybody with half a brain knew he was a terrible fit for Newcastle. Allardyce football has always been building physical, gritty, defensive bulwarks, and try and scrape out a goalless draw, or maybe scratch out a winner. And that was never going to fly in Newcastle, who have always been an attacking side, and had an offense oriented squad when he took over, with the back four the obvious weakpoint of the squad.

Allardyce was just obviously the wrong man for that team. I remember my immediate reaction when I heard about his appointment was: "Oh my god, this is going to be a complete trainwreck." They should never have driven out Sir Bobby, that was just sad...
   756. Obi One Kenobi Nil (BFFB) Posted: March 24, 2010 at 12:08 PM (#3484747)
Freddie Shepperd to blame for that one, he screwed Robson over big time.

Pretty much every non-idiot fan realised Allardyce was going to be a disaster, the manager most wanted at the time was Steve Bruce or Hughes.

Absolutely, that was what I was trying to say. I dislike Allardyce, because his teams play boring football, and he seems like a d1ck. But he was set up to fail at Newcastle, so I have a hard time blaming him for doing so.
   758. Flynn Posted: March 24, 2010 at 12:44 PM (#3484765)
To be fair to Allardyce I think he would have kept you lot up had he stayed. You probably needed him more than people realized.

Of course getting rid of SBR for not getting you into the champions league set that whole s**tfest into motion, that is undeniable. Hell, getting rid of Glenn Roeder wasn't even all that wise.
   759. Obi One Kenobi Nil (BFFB) Posted: March 24, 2010 at 03:03 PM (#3484903)
To be honest I would rather be relegated than forced to watch the teams Allardyce put out, by god they just made you want to stop watching football altogether.

But the rot really started with Souness who destroys pretty much any club he touches.

Roeder was likable but clearly way over his head. The mistake wasn't getting rid of him but hiring the wholly unsuitable Allardyce.

I'm torn on Hughton. I think he will be severely over his head in the Premier League (win the next game and we go up) but also deserves to be given the chance to fail.

And here's what happened between Taylor & Carroll, source is good :ninja:

Taylor was texting Carrols lass who has Andy's bairn, while the Toon were at Swansea and he was in Newcastle, asking her to come round...Taylor used to shag her before carroll.

Taylor is despised at the club by all, very arrogant and done his best to move to Everton last summer which pissed the lads off. His Fatha, has gone to the press and spinning loads of ****e on the back of Carrolls bother in the Bigg market....Here's the depth of feeling in the squad....Harper, Nolan, Smudge, Butt and Shola all went in and told Hughton yesterday to sell Taylor because of his selfish attitude.

Carroll is apparantly thick as mince but a good honest lad and easily wound up.. They were in the treatment room after training when Carroll went up to Taylor and said 'One chance to admit it as i've seen the texts' and Taylor just laughed at him and went to walk away and Carroll dropped him.
   761. Francoeur Sans Gages (AlouGoodbye) Posted: March 24, 2010 at 05:16 PM (#3485064)
I'm assuming Smudge = Alan Smith? Fatha = father?

With his previous, I don't know how you can possibly describe Carroll as a "good honest lad" except in the most despicably football of ways (i.e. he's English, white, illiterate, and a thug on the pitch).

Well, you guys are causing me to circle Newcastle-Tottenham on my calendar for next year. BTW, if Tottenham gets to the last weekend still in the hunt for top 4, I'm up for early morning drinking at Nevada Smith's or some other bar, again. In fact, that last weekend could be epic for 1, 4 and relegation even if Spurs fall out of it.
   763. ursus arctos Posted: March 24, 2010 at 05:22 PM (#3485072)
Yeah, Smudge is Alan Smith, and I think the fact that Carroll has character witnesses of Smith's quality answers your second point.

Nah, what it means is that he is a typical radgie from a shitty background that you'll find around any of the council estates throughout Newcastle. Perfectly fine, if completely thick, when sobre but violent when pissed or wound up. See Bradley, Milton with less self control.

Joey Barton's easily the worst thing about Newcastle, because they signed him knowing full well what he was like. As long as they employ him, I wish nothing but ill on the club- it's nothing against the fans, BFFB, but I just don't have time for an organisation that includes Barton.

Well to be fair to Barton, he has admitted that he has behaved idiotically throughout his career. At least he appears to be getting some self-awareness, unlike most of the prats / thugs who are English soccer players.

He did that after the cigar eye-stubbing incident also.

EDIT: But Joey is still the white sheep of his family; his brother, the racist axe murderer, has a somewhat worse record.

I admit to being a bit torn myself. The callous side of me is delighted Spurs are facing by far the weakest team left in the Cup. But at the end of the day, Spurs will have to beat one of two excellent teams to win the Cup even if they progress to the final. If I could wave the magic wand, I'd have Pompey beating Villa (since Spurs can't seem to manage it) and Spurs beating Chelsea to set up a real "Fairytale Final".

I was super impressed with Eidur Gudjohnsen. Bentley changed the game, but I think Eidur wuz robbed for Man of the Match honors. He worked hard and was the biggest goal threat during the frustrating first half, and then in the second showed great versatility and class playing up top and in the center of midfield. Once he dropped back, he was closing down energetically and helped Thud boss the midfield while setting up and rounding off a lovely passing move for his goal. Looks another very sage Harry Redknapp bargain find. If he keeps contributing performances like that, I hope he stays on past the end of the season; he really showed his pedigree tonight.

No. No it was not. I mean the title race was allready over, but that's just plain embarissing. On top of that Bayern reached the final of the DFB cup. Truly a black, black day -_-

Not completely black, though.

Rangers got knocked out of the cup by Dundee United, and I am managing to come to terms with Bayern's win by convincing myself that the last thing they needed as they embark a set of fixtures over the next two and a half weeks that would make strong men weep was 30 minutes of high-pressure extra time.

I'm not a huge fan of managerial rotating door philosophy - I still think that's what doomed Newcastle. But it's hard to argue that his team underperformed in the SPL and in Europe. There's obviously no official word on possible successors yet, but Roy Keane seems to be getting a lot of buzz from the fans...

Hasn't Henry to NYRBs been a rumor for about a year now? I have to admit that I kind of like the MLS getting these types, even if they are well past their prime. I'd rather watch Henry than the generic, mediocre MLS player.

O am basing this entirely on championship manager, so it must be right. Basically, you aren't allowed to talk to anybody who is not under contract with your team until there are 6 months or less remaining on that players contract. There have been cases where teams have been caught tampering, but a lot of times the "courting" is done through the media, and any claoms of tampering in those instances will likely get woven away by the authorities.

I will no go and double check this (not that i don't trust CM of course).
   793. Fancy Pants Handle is the AntAgonizer Posted: March 25, 2010 at 07:19 PM (#3486025)
With six months or less remaining on an existing contract for players aged 23 or older, they are free to negotiate with other clubs and sign a pre-contract, indicating their ability to move to their intended club on a Bosman transfer once the next transfer window opens.

per wikipedia

This is correct. However, strictly speaking this only applies to a foreign club - it is up to individual national associations whether they want to apply this rule domestically. The FA doesn't. So to give a topical example, Bayern Munich could offer Joe Cole a pre-contract, whereas Man Utd can't.

However, this is a FIFA rule, and as such is subject to legal challenge - to say that, in some circumstances, you should be able to talk earlier. Ashley Cole threatened to take this rule to court, and speaking to an employment lawyer expert friend of mine it seemed he might well have won. But since then the Lisbon Treaty has passed which muddies the waters further (sport gets certain exemptions from EU workers rights laws).

Long story short - if Henry's contract is up this summer, MLS have every right to offer him a pre-contract now.
   795. Fancy Pants Handle is the AntAgonizer Posted: March 25, 2010 at 08:22 PM (#3486091)
From what I can tell Henry signed a 4 year deal in the summer of '07, which should take him throught to '11. Which means they should need consent from Barca to talk to him.
   796. ursus arctos Posted: March 25, 2010 at 08:30 PM (#3486099)
1) The Henry to RBNY rumor is at least a year old. That doesn't mean that it won't happen, but it has been "a sure thing" on several previous occasions.

2) Henry is on a four year contract that currently expires in June 2011. That said, given the emergence of Pedro and Bojan's recent improvement, I am pretty sure that Barca wouldn't be heart-broken to see him go for a decent fee.

3) Tweets from Empire Supporters Club say that Nevada Smith's has reopened, but NS has yet to confirm. There is a rumor that the police attention relates more to their nighttime business than to anything relating to football.

I'm a Dr Pepper man! But I would take a Red Bull, since it's on topic.

It's wierd, the only real source to this rumor I can find seems to be a Telgraph article. Which states Henry's contract expires summer 2011, and then in the next sentance states: Henry could join RB after the world cup or at the start of 2011 at the beginning of the next MLS season. It completely fails to mention HOW this could be possible.

Anyway, I'm not that familiar with MLS, I'm not sure if their cap system includes anything on transfer fees. Or whether RB would be willing to pay a "decent fee". But it certainly seems like a pretty large roadblock.

Because maybe Barcelona would be willing to let Henry go on a free, since he is going to be 33 this summer, he's scored just 4 goals for Barca this entire season, and he's getting paid around $10m per year.
