Farewell, Impossible Dreamer…
Gibson was signed by the Red Sox out of high school. A catcher, Gibson toiled a decade in the minor leagues before making it to the Red Sox in 1967. He was a favorite of Hall of Fame manager Dick Williams, who had managed him at Triple A Toronto in 1966. Attar recalled how excited Gisbon was at Attar’s house one night after the 1966 season because Williams had told him he would be coming to Boston the next spring. “He was so proud to be representing Fall River, representing Durfee High School,” Attar said.
In his major league debut, Gibson caught Billy Rohr’s near no-hitter at Yankee Stadium in the first week of the 1967 season, getting a pair of hits off Whitey Ford in the process. And he was the starting catcher in Game 1 of the World Series against the Cardinals. The Sox lost that series in seven games.

Getting old sucks. Dying at age 69 sucks more. Freakin' awful.
Being 49 years old, I have memories of Russ Gibson on the Red Sox.
I had the priveledge of meeting Russ Gibson last year at the 40th anniversary of the Impossible Dream Team. I spent about 5 minutes talking with him and he truly seemed to enjoy those 5 minutes. It was my favorite part of the 2 day event in fact. I happened to have a copy of the box score from his first major league game(Billy Rohr 1 hitter vs the Yankees) and gave it to him and was so appreciative. He went 2-4 that day and joked how he must have contributed to Whitey Ford retiring later that season. He definetly left an impression with me as being a truly very nice guy. I am gald I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Gibson. May you rest in peace.
thanks for the welcome but I am not new around here. I just don't post too often anymore. I used to post quite a bit as Gary Santerre but no time and no desire prevents me from participating like I once did. I enjoy lurking, though.
