Hicksville man arrested in Mickey Mantle eBay swindle

He offered a baseball card of “The Mick” for sale on e-Bay. And, Nassau County Police said, Ari Orakciyan, 26, of 58 Field Rd. in Hicksville, eagerly accepted and cashed the checks for the winning bids for a 1959 baseball card of New York Yankee Mickey Mantle. The problem was that Orakciyan, unlike Mantle, allegedly never delivered.

According to detectives, Orakciyan first offered the Mantle card for sale in May, 2005, and received a payment of $1,280 from a 59-year-old Florida man. But the card was never delivered. Then, police said, Orakciyan offered the card again on e-Bay in May, 2006—this time accepting a winning bid of $1,130.50 from a 45-year-old Arizona man.

...“He was just using the same card over and over as a scam,” a Nassau police spokesman said. “It was the same Mickey Mantle card. Checks were sent to the defendant’s post office box . . . But the defendant never delivered the baseball card. “Nothing’s sacred anymore.”

Won’t somebody please think of the BGS slab testers!

Is it that surprising someone from Hicksville got swindled?

Hicksville may be a pretty crappy town imho, but its names does not accurately reflect why

Nothing’s sacred anymore.”

We think this because someone broke the sacred rules of the Holy Order of eBay?

Did these people not look at his approval rating? Either it was a new account with a zero or very low rating, or he'd gotten some negatives. Before I'd send someone >$1K, I'd:

1. Make sure they had darn near a 100% rating, with a goodly number of sales/purchases to back up the rating; and

2. Use escrow.

There's probably some other good steps people could take to cover themselves, but those are the first two to leap to mind. I've been screwed twice on purchases through eBay, for a total of about $20: a DVD and a CD.

I now know the secret.

1. Sell small items to build up Ebay rating
2. Sell huge item
3. Profit!
