Hit by pitch in hand, Jeter’s status for Sunday’s Stadium finale uncertain

Yankees captain Derek Jeter was hit in the left hand with a pitch in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game against the Orioles, placing his status for Sunday’s Yankee Stadium finale in immediate doubt.

Jeter was hit leading off the inning against Jim Miller. He recoiled toward the Baltimore dugout and was attended to by manager Joe Girardi and head trainer Gene Monahan before walking off the field, drawing boos from the crowd of 54,662.

Jeter, who was serving as New York’s designated hitter, was replaced in the game by pinch-runner Brett Gardner. Jeter has a long history of playing through injuries and insisting upon being in the lineup for important games, and Sunday’s finale against the Orioles would certainly qualify.

Oh…and Michael Kay, the on-the-field monuments in centerfield were NEVER called Monument Park.

I understand that it's a "historic" game and whatnot, but is it really an important game at this point?

It's Derek Jeter's most important game until March...I can't imagine he'd be out of the lineup, since it's a game that is very important to him, and is also a game where performance means very little.

He did. And he went 1 for his next 30 or so instead of taking some time off and letting it heal.

He has no minor-league numbers before 2008, but what he has as good. 42 k, 13 bb in 43 AAA innings before his callup, though only 35 k in 50 AA innings (only 6 bb). 25 years old, born in Mexico.

So far in 26 innings with the Yanks he's got a WHIP of exactly 1.00---20 hits, 6 walks and 12 strikeouts. He's also (so far) been moving the ball around the strike zone and changing speeds. Small sample size of course, but beyond this he looks very confident out there on the mound, and as evidence of that his control seems to improve rather than disappear in tight spots.

Of course for every pitcher who begins like this and makes it, there are probably half a dozen who wind up as journeymen or worse. But hell, at least it gives us something to look forward to.

I think he looks good enough that there's really no need for the Yankees to go after Sabbathia this winter.
