Hochman: Former Phillie Dave Cash: Yes, Obama can use my slogan

While a certain Braves manager is STILL trying to collect off of Warren G. Harding’s “Cox and Cocktails” slogan.

Dave Cash coined the phrase “Yes We Can” in spring training 1974, and the Phillies splattered it on bumper stickers, posters and the Jumbotron at Veterans Stadium.
Coined the phrase? Coined the phrase?

“I didn’t make a dime out of it,” Cash said the other day. “I wasn’t looking for monetary gain. I was looking to motivate the team for the challenges it faced, the [Bob] Gibsons and the [Tom] Seavers.

“The Phillies even put it on the back of the shirts the grounds crew wore. Once they put it up on the scoreboard, it really caught on.”

..."I never thought,” Cash said, “in my lifetime, I’d see a black man running for president. In 1966, when I signed to play pro baseball, I couldn’t stay in a hotel with a white person. Now, anybody who says ‘Yes We Can’ is all right with me.

I hate it when presidential candidates like Barack Obama and Albert Belle steal slogans.

Me too. Apparently he's going to switch to "What's gonna work? Teamwork!"

Sounds like the Phillies were just trying to tap some of that t-shirt and bumper sticker slogan revenue the Mets had discovered the year before with Tug McGraw's "Ya Gotta Believe." Don't think Tug made a buck off that one, either.

It was a slogan like this that led Yogi Berra and BBWAA writers in 1974 to believe that Cash was just as good as Money.

And he contemplated going with the Yankees' cheer during Clemens' last year "Let's hear it for the team and Rah-rah-rah for Rocket!" but he quickly realized it was completely out of context as an election slogan.

Looking at the NL MVP finish, if you dropped positions 1-3 to 11-13 and moved positions 4-12 up to 1-10, the balloting might actually be pretty good.
